I’ve gone on two Amazonas Explorer trips and, as far as I’m concerned, they are the best trip organizers in
Peru. One of the trips was the standard Inca trail hike, pulled offperfectly; the other was taking inflatable kayaks
(充气皮艇) to the headwaters of the TuichiRiver in Madidi National Park in Bolivia, then kayaking for a week
down to the river’s mouth. I’ve known the owner, Paul Cripps, for more than twenty years—if he hadn’t
personally hiked it, biked it, floated it or climbed it, then it probably simply couldn’t have been done!

As it moves across central Italy, an old train pulling carriages from the 1930s and 1950s crosses the forests of
the Majella National Park and the Abruzzo highlands. The Park Railway, traveling through valleys and tunnels and
第 4页/共 12页
over old bridges, offers visitors a view of small, rural and hidden villages in the country.
It was the first of some 1,000 kilometers of rail line to have re-opened under a project called “Timelesstracks”,
which aims to take visitors to forgotten parts of Italy instead of the popular cities. The tracks have lived through
different eras. They were mistakenly considered unproductive during the 1960s and 1970s but are now once again
of value.
Norma Pagiotti, a 28-year-old traveler from Florence, said, “People are used to cities and places, like Florence,
that everyone knows. But then there are other areas that need to be discovered. This is the right kind of tourism that
does not destroy the reality of places.”
Caterina Quaranta, from southern Italy, used the term “nostalgic” to describe riding the train. “The train
reminds me of my youth and the things of the past, which were simpler. But now everything is fast, short-lived,”
Quaranta said.
After climbing up almost 1,000 meters in altitude, the train’s first stop is in Palena, a hill-top town known for
its beautiful views over the national park. Traditionalfolk music accompanies people getting offthe train, with
local foods such as lamb skewers and soft pancakes and products by local artisans awaiting them at the station.
“The train financially helps several small towns around here.” said Gino Toppi,60, as he helped his wife with
the food stand in the small station. His village has long lost population due to the declining birth rate and younger
people leaving for the bigger cities.
24. What is the main purpose of the “Timelesstracks” project
A. Topromote tourism in Italy’s popular cities.
B. Toprove the old railway unproductive.
C. Toconnect major Italian cities.
D. Tovisit off-the-beaten-track destinations.
25. How did Norma Pagiotti think of exploring lesser-known areas in Italy
A. It is a waste of time compared to visiting popular cities.
B. It helps preserve the authenticity of these places.
C. It makes these areas too commercialized.
D. It is only suitable for elderly travelers.
26. How did Caterina Quaranta feel about her experience on the Park Railway
A. Feeling a strong dislike.B. Longing for the past time.
C. Causing great worry.D. Having pleasant relaxation.
第 5页/共 12页
27. According to Gino Toppi, what current benefit will the railway bring to the villagers along the way
A. The economic promotion.B. The increasing birth rate.
C. The population mobility.D. The lifestyle of big cities.

Over the past few centuries, we have dug, chopped, burned, drilled, pumped, stripped, forged, flared, lit,
launched, driven, and flown our way to adding 2.4 trillion metric tons of carbon dioxide to Earth’s atmosphere. On
a lonely, lunar-like valley 20 miles outside of Reykjavík, Iceland, Edda Aradóttir is on a mission to put it back
where it came from.
In sending CO2deep beneath the surface of the planet, she’s aiming to reverse one of the most consequential
acts(有重要意义的行为) of human history: the unearthing of massive amounts of subterranean (地下) carbon as
fossil fuels, the lifeblood of modern civilization but now its bane as well. She doesn’t have much time. Nor do the
rest of us. The extreme weather and record-hot temperatures from climate change are already here—and virtually
certain to get worse.
Scientists and entrepreneurs like Aradóttir are embarking on (着手) ambitious—and sometimes
controversial—projects to remove carbon dioxide from ambient air and lock it away. In Arizona, an engineering
professor shows me his “mechanicaltree,” a single one of which may someday be able to do the work of a
thousand regular trees in capturing and storing CO2. In Australia, a leading oceanographer tells me that seaweed is
salvation, if only we’d help it grow in giant aqua-gardens of kelp and wakame that could harbor billions of tons of
carbon dioxide. Atop a university building in Zürich, an Uruguayan inventor with a gleam in his eye presents me
with a small vial of fuel made from nothing but sunlight and air.
What these efforts have in common is that they are geared in the long run to drag downward a number that
climate experts agree holds the key to the health of the planet. That number is the atmospheric concentration of
carbon dioxide. Todaythis critical number stands at some 420 parts per million, rising roughly 50 percent since
1850. Carbon-capture proponents say that their work—to capture the main driver of climate change, radically
scaled up in coming decades—will help bring this number down.
28. What is the main idea of the first and second paragraph
A. Toomuch carbon contributes to climate change.
B. Increasing carbon due to human activities urges action.
C. For hundreds of year humans have increased too much carbon.
D. Scientists should put carbon back to where it is from.
第 6页/共 12页
29. What does the underlined phrase “one of the most consequential acts” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. What boosts civilization also opens Pandora’s box.
B. Human civilization leads to extremely unstable climate.
C. There is less time for us to protect our environment.
D. Modern civilization depends too much on fossil fuels.
30. Why does the author mention some scientists and entrepreneurs in paragraph 3
A. Toshow their ambitions of reusing carbon.
B. Tosuggest the possibility of controlling carbon.
C. Toofferpractical ways of emitting carbon.
D. Todisplay a new evidence in scientific researches.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Another Possible Weaponto Fight Climate Change
B. Industrial Revolutions Spelling Disaster for Human
C. Extreme Climate Change Waitingto Be Urgently Eased
D. New Measures to Reduce Greenhouse-gas Emissions

A plague of rats is creating havoc in Karumba, a small coastal town in Queensland, Australia, where hordes of
rodents (啮齿动物) are chewing on electrical wires and otherwise eating everything they can find—and washing
up dead in massive numbers, creating a literal stink in the community.
The long-haired rat eats shoots and leaves—and then leaves for the north, seeking more food, researcher
Emma Gray of the school of biology and environmental science at Queensland University of Technologytold NPR.
Like an army, the mass of rats also has a very effective, and literal, force multiplier. Gray says they can “produce
12 young every three weeks when conditions are good!”
“They come in waves,” Karumba resident Jon Jensen told the ABC radio station in Brisbane. “They almost
seem trained and organized. They’re in numbers, mate, and they swim around in the rivers like little puppy dogs.”
Everywhere they go, the rats eat—and eat. “They’re hungry, they’ve swum a long way, they’ve come across land
a long way,” Jensen said, “andthey’re eating anything and everything they can get their hands on.”
Queensland’s topography, with a river system that twists its way to the northern coast, funnels the rodents
toward the shore—and dead or alive, hordes of them arrive in Karumba, a fishing and port community on the
Gulf of Carpentaria. Once they’ve arrived, there’s little anyone can do to curtail the plague. Trapshave been set up,
第 7页/共 12页
he said, but in the face of such multitudes, the measure “really is a token gesture.”
However, “as quickly as the rats irrupt or ’boom’ in numbers, so too do they decline or ‘bust,’” Gray said. The
decline can be linked to several factors, from a change to dry conditions to increases in inbreeding and disease—
and predators that feast on the rodent influx. Feral cats, for instance, are eating well. “Generally during a rat
irruption, the area also sees a significant increase in the number of predatory birds,” Gray said. He added, “This
year we have them in all their glory and can’t wait for them to disappear.”
32. Which of the following can probably describe the rats in Karumba
A. Untrained & disorganized.B. Social & reproductive.
C. Abnormal & digestive.D. Domestic & overeating.
33. Why does the rats’ migration end in Karumba
A. Because geological features of the river system bring rats there.
B. Because there is enough food in Karumba for rats such as fishes.
C. Because the northern coast in Karumba provides habitats for rats.
D. Because the climate of the north is suitable for their inbreeding.
34. What does the author mean by “a token gesture” in paragraph 4
A. An impossible action.B. A worthwhile task.
C. An ineffective method.D. A favorable behavior.
35. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A. Todescribe the consequence of the plague.
B. Toanalyze the reasons why rats are increasing.
C. Toimply a promising result of the plague.
D. Toshow an evident upsurge in predatory birds.
