By the time she turned 18, Khadijah Williams had attended twelve schools. She had lived in shelters, in parks,
and in motels, never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. She had tolerated the blames of students
who considered her as “different”.
Homeless since early childhood, Khadijah struggled all her life to hide her circumstances from teachers and
fellow students. However, academics proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at
the age of 9, she placed in the 99th percentile on a state exam, and her teacher told her she was “gifted”. From that
moment forward, Khadijah decided to do whatever it took to keep herself in that category. “I was so proud of being
smart. I never wanted people to say, ‘You got the easy way out because you’re homeless,’” she said. “I never saw it
as an excuse.”
By the second year of high school, she realized that she could not succeed in getting the further education she
dreamed of without getting help to go beyond what her current school could offer. She talked to teachers and
counselors (辅导员) who helped her apply to summer community college classes, scholarships, and enrichment
programs. And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to complete the rest of her
school career there—a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a. m. and not getting home until 11 p. m.
第 4页/共 12页
Her perseverance and hard work paid off, however. When she poured the story of her life into her Harvard
University college application, she was accepted.
Once Khadijah felt ready to tell her story, it won her notice not only from college admissions boards but also
from the news media, including Oprah, who introduced Khadijah on her show. Now as a successful student at
Harvard, Khadijah continues to use the lessons of her extraordinary life to help and inspire other students.
4. What was Khadijah’s life like before she turned 18
A. She was badly treated at home. B. She struggled with academics.
C. She had lived in various places. D. She often misbehaved at school.
5. How did Khadijah find confidence in herself again
A. By hiding her circumstance from others. B. By working hard for academic success.
C. By being proud of her homeless background. D. By getting help from teachers and counselors.
6. Why did Khadijah apply for summer community college program
A. To use her experience to inspire others. B. To get financial help from her teachers.
C. To realize her dream to go to university. D. To be admitted to Jefferson High School.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. Khadijah’s success in her academic pursuits. B. Khadijah’s experience of overcoming adversity.
C. Khadijah’s involvement in community service. D. Khadijah’s achievements at Harvard University.
C
Are you chillaxed enough Recently, having a sense of ease seems to have become one of the most important
qualities that a person should have to be seen as successful and attractive.
The discussion arose from a previous incident. A family’s luggage (行李) was rejected for shipment, but they
continued their journey like nothing bad had happened. A girl witnessed their calm attitude in difficult
circumstances and shared the story online. She described their attitude as being “chillaxed”, meaning staying calm
in the face of barriers. With the word gaining more attention, an increasing number of people have shared their
chillaxed lives online.
In psychology, maintaining a sense of ease is similar to “psychological resilience”, which refers to the ability
to effectively adjust and adapt to tough situations. particularly by being mentally, emotionally and behaviorally
flexible to pressure. It stresses a drive for success, steadily advancing toward a goal, and being prepared to accept
any outcome without complaining.
In both work and study, many people get anxious or even collapse when faced with short-term bottlenecks.
第 5页/共 12页
Therefore, they hurriedly seek immediate changes, which in most cases prevents them from achieving the desired
result. Rather than going after immediate outcomes, it’s more significant to maintain steady, gradual progress and
adopt a long-term mindset.
Interestingly, as the Internet becomes filled with hashtags (标签) like “only those who are chillaxed are
attractive”, many people are beginning to feel anxious because they don’t fit that description. Still, it’s important to
note that while a state of ease may be favorable, there’s nothing wrong with not being chillaxed. Indeed, many
people achieve their goals by pushing themselves to their limits, though feeling frustrated at pressure from time to
time. But as long as you are fighting for your ideal life, you’re definitely someone who’s appealing and respectable
no matter whether you’re chillaxed or not.
8. Why is the family’s experience mentioned in the passage
A. To introduce the origin of the word “chillaxed”.
B. To show the family’s ability to stay chillaxed.
C. To highlight the importance of being chillaxed.
D. To argue against the rejection of luggage shipment.
9. What’s highlighted in psychological resilience
A. Quick forgetting of challenges.
B. Dependence on external factors.
C. Flexibility and steady progress.
D. Seeking quick fixes to problems.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards being chillaxed
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Dismissive. D. Unclear.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. A Chillaxed Attitude: Shortcut Towards Success.
B. Remaining Chillaxed Helps to Settle Conflicts.
C. Why Being Chillaxed Does Not Guarantee Happiness.
D. Being Chillaxed: The Art of Psychological Strength.

When you picture a farm, do you think of green fields and a big red barn The farms of the future may look
very different from that. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be
above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was unused for

almost 70 years before it was turned into the world’s first underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an
ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor spaces.
Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic
technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows
for the perfect pest-free (无害虫的) growing environment.
These methods save 70 percent less water than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within
a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or
growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs
allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under different
light spectrums (光谱).”
Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast
enough to be economically (经济地) feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve, you’
ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four
hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they hope to be
entering the local retail markets soon.
12. What makes the underground farm possible
A. The perfect environment. B. The great demand for fruits.
C. The hydroponic technology. D. The good weather condition.
13. What is the function of the LED lighting system
A. To get rid of pests. B. To make use of solar energy.
C. To allow greens to grow rapidly. D. To provide various light spectrums.
14. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Difficult. B. Common. C. Impossible. D. Achievable.
15. What does the company expect of the underground farm
A. It’ll benefit more customers. B. It’ll be environment-friendly.
C. It’ll keep food fresher for longer. D. It’ll introduce more advanced technologies.

It had been a challenging but rewarding term, filled with hard work and a thirst for knowledge. As I handed in
my final assignment and saw it was graded A, a sense of pride and satisfaction washed over me. Little did I know
that my accomplishments had not gone unnoticed by my families, who had been closely observing my progress.
On the first day of summer vacation, my mother told me excitedly that we would pay a visit to Marco the next
day to cheer for my academic progress. When I got the good news, I felt on top of the world and my spirits soared.
As I lay in bed that night, a mix of anticipation and delight welled up in my heart, and I slid into a dream-filled
sleep, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the coming adventure.
After we arrived in Marco, my parents said that we would first visit the Marco Tower. Marco Tower, built in
the late 19th century, is a historic landmark that showcases the rich architectural heritage of the city. It is also
considered one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Upon hearing the inspiring news, I bounced up and down
with joy. But then I felt a bit uneasy because of my fear of heights.
Inside the lift, my palms grew sweaty as anxiety consumed me. I paced back and forth in the tower lift, unsure
of whether I would have the courage. After the lift reached the specific floor, I gasped in horror. The floor here was
made of glass, so one could appreciate the height of the tower and take a real adventure. Seeing my family both
take out their phones to shoot the grand views, I felt under pressure. Then my mother smiled at me and said
delightedly, “Just take it easy and you can do it.”

I was totally struck by the view unfolding before my eyes. My eyes were immediately drawn to the
magnificent structure that stood tall in the city center-Marco Tower. Its charm was without equal, its soaring height
dominating the skyline. I couldn’t help feeling a mixture of awe and admiration. I reminded myself of the
