But research shows that being kind can activate(激活) an area of the brain called Striaturn. Research also shows that kindness improves people's mood(情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
First, being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close-friends and family. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. These are words that millions(百万) of volunteers around the world could certainly agree with.
People who volunteer spend their time offering help to others and don't ask for pay. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal center to help improve the treatment(治疗) of animals.
Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and try out new skills. For young adults, valuable(珍贵的) lessons may also be learned through volunteering.
Take Andrew Makhoul , a student at the University of Pennsylvania , as an example. Andrew didn't spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He traveled to an orphanage(孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America. It is in one of the poorest parts of the area. And it depends on volunteers to stay open.
Andrew doesn't speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn't a problem . “You communicated with love , ” according to an article on his university's website. And what he gave out, he got back. “You could see love when you looked in their eyes. ” Andrew's first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he'd be back soon because he saw love and hope.
Sherry Anderson once wrote, “Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless(无价值的) but because they 're priceless . ” And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do—their work is “priceless ”.

第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(注意每小题的词数要求)。

As we all know, fresh flowers can make a room look and smell good. They also have some magic power(力量).
Martin lay in hospital for weeks after falling from a building in 2011.He faced a lot of surgeries(手术) and began losing hope. Martin's friends and family members came to visit him. They brought him fresh flowers each day. Then something wonderful happened. Martin's condition started to improve, and he looked towards the future with more hope.
Martin soon realized that other patients(病人) around him didn't get the same kindness. This made him go from room to room, giving away his flowers to them. The results were amazing. He watched people's misery turn into happiness.
After leaving the hospital, Martin couldn't forget the power of his flowers.Six months later, to help more people, he started a project called the Simple Sunflower Project. He collected used flowers from some events like weddings(婚礼) and then the flowers were given to people in hospitals and the old people's homes. In the first year, the project served no more than 100 people. But in the following 12 years, it gave away flowers to nearly 30,000 people.
Many studies have found that fresh flowers as well as plants are good for people's health. Flowers could make the patients less stressed and less painful(痛苦的). Patients with flowers had shorter hospital stays as well. Flowers make a great difference.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular.
A kind act makes someone sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not set off that chain(链条) of good feelings to people around
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone's spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you're getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
The story doesn't end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you're in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn't it
