Have you ever heard the phrase“You never get a second chance to make a first impression" It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true-the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have stated your name shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression All things grown-ups tell you-such as being polite and being well-dressed-are important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being responsive , and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a positive(积极的) impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people , generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
Furthermore , smiling and being in a positive mood help you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet-and impress--with a cheerful smile.

When we communicate with others, we use body language to help us better express our thoughts an feelings.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and gestures. Your whole appearance communicates things. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are sending many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no". You might give a “ thumbs up” to show that you like or agree with something.
However, the same body language can have different meanings in different countries. If you nod your head to express the word “yes”in India, people may get confused , because it has the opposite meaning in this
country.
But now we are spending more time online. Our “ digital(数字的)body language” is becoming increasingly important. For example, instead of using voice messages, you can video chat with your friends to show them your face.
Don't be afraid if you are not good at body language. You can practise your skills in front of a mirror. Just remember , practice makes perfect!

Dear John,
I’m writing to give you some advice as you are going to take part in an English contest next week. First of all, when you stand on the platform, keep smiling from the start to the end, which is the basic rule for showing respect for others. What’s more, you’d better have an eye contact with your audience and remember not to stare at them, which would be rude. In addition, pay more attention to your hand gestures as body language is especially important in the speech. Last but not least, don’t forget to express your gratitude to the audience sincerely when you finish your speech.
I hope these suggestions will be helpful to you and wish you good luck in your speech.
Yours,
Peter
