1.(2025 泸县一模)One Thursday afternoon, when I was in Grade 9,a new boy came into my classroom. He was short and thin.He walked up to the teacher and told her, very seriously, that he was new.His name was Christian. He sat down, took a look at me,and then looked away.I didn't think he was very nice and I was sure he wasn't the type I would like to become friends with.
During that year,I didn't talk to him much, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never ate lunch with anybody, and he never talked to anybody but me.
But one day I joined those unkind kids who were making fun of him.We made fun of him though I thought it was wrong.
"Haven't you got any friends?" a kid asked Christian, who had walked past us alone, head down.
"No,he hasn't got any friends. He's too stupid and shy," I said. Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest dog eyes I had ever seen.I felt very sorry at that moment.
That night,I couldn't sleep because I couldn't get Christian's face out of my mind.In the weeks that followed,he never met my eyes in class and never smiled at me.It was really hard for me to decide to write him a note asking him to forgive(原谅) me.But I thought I should.
The next day in class,I wrote him a note telling him how sorry I felt.About five minutes later,I turned and saw tears in his eyes. "You will never realize what your apology(道歉) has meant to me,Jimmy." he said to me. "I hope we can become friends."
We had lunch together that noon and we had the best talk I had ever had.Over the years at high school,we were close friends.

When should you plant spinach?
Spinach can survive (存活) temperatures as low as —7 degrees Celsius (摄氏度),but that's not good for its growth.Spinach seeds sprout (发芽) best in soil temperatures between 7 and 24 degrees Celsius.Once the seeds have sprouted, the vegetable grows best in daytime temperatures between 15 and 27 degrees Celsius.Temperatures above 29 degrees Celsius can influence its taste, making it bitter.
Where should you grow spinach?
Pot size:A 15﹣ to 20﹣ centimeter﹣ deep pot would be the best.Depending on your space,it can be as wide as you want.
Make sure your pot has a hole at the bottom.
Soil:For growing spinach in pots, use a mix rich in organic matter (有机物).Make sure it won't get waterlogged (浸透水的) easily.
Spacing:Give each spinach plant seven centimeters of space. If you want to harvest (收获) large leaves, give each plant a little more space.
Position:If you are growing spinach in the fall and winter, keep the plants in a sunny place.Make sure they receive at least four hours of direct sunlight every day.For spring and summer planting, place your plants in a position that receives some shade (阴凉),especially in the afternoon.
How should you take care of your spinach?
Watering:Keep the soil moist (湿润的) but not wet.Waterlogging will lead to rot (腐烂).Avoid watering the leaves.
Fertilizing (施肥):To grow healthy spinach, you need to provide nitrogen (氮素).Use a slow﹣ drop fertilizer. It will provide nitrogen and other nutrients (养分) slowly.
When can you harvest?

Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.
In 1981,at the age of 39,I lost my job.The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001,when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it.But one person said,"If you can imagine yourself giving a concession(败选)speech, then why not go for it?"That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.
In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail﹣and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.
Make your own luck
Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
Whatever you choose to do,even if it's not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it.Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night.Hard work creates chances.
Never stop learning
The most powerful word in English language is"why".There is nothing so powerful
as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神).Whatever field you choose for starting a business﹣be a lifelong student.
Give back
You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.
My first donation was a 5 check to my alma mater (母校).And while the checks(支票)may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.
You don't have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.

6.(2024 广水市模拟)A number of years ago,a man went to visit a circus(马戏团) in New York.He was able to walk around looking at the lions, monkeys, bears and other circus animals. As he was passing the elephants,he suddenly stopped. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg.NO chains,no cages. It was clear that the elephants could,at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn't try to get away. "Well," the trainer said, "when they are very young and much smaller,we use the same size rope to tie them and,at that age,it's enough to hold them.As they grow up,they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them,so they never try to break free."
"How could it be?" said the man. These animals could at any time break free from ropes. But because they were always stuck right where they were, they believed they couldn't.
Just like the poor elephants, how many of u
