Yes—more outdoor spaces are always better
Opening up car-free streets can create more outdoor spaces for people to get outside and enjoy life. Shops and restaurants on car-free streets benefit (得益) from foot traffic. And slow streets encourage new businesses, such as food trucks and outdoor vendors (小贩), to develop in the area. Also, cars cause air and noise pollution. Closing streets to cars encourages people to take buses or ride bikes instead. It’s safer and better for everyone.
No—car-free streets cause other problems
Car-free streets cause traffic problems on nearby roadways. That makes it harder for people to go about their daily lives. Also, businesses on open streets can get into trouble because foot traffic doesn’t always mean more sales. They could lose customers who want to drive to shops. And even when streets are car-free, there are usually still other vehicles (交通工具) like scooters and bikes. Some people, especially kids, may not be looking out for these vehicles. That could put them at risk.

Walls are no stranger to the Chinese people in the long history. They built yard walls to keep thieves and animals away from their villages; they built city walls to protect people from enemies; also, they built the Great Wall to safeguard their country.
The “wall culture” continues for centuries, and lots of money has been spent to build walls around housing areas, campuses (校园), or even a public park. But with the development of the society and a safer environment, people realize that building walls may waste money and space.
Walls around some community squares and public parks in cities have given way to fences (围栏). In some cities, even the fences have disappeared. Several years ago, Beijing took the lead in taking down the fences in free public parks. People were worried that the fruits and plants would be stolen overnight and the grass could be destroyed within a few days. But that didn’t happen, showing that people know what is good and what is not for both the city and themselves.
★ It is reported that some new universities have no boundary walls (边界墙) now. Without physical walls, maybe there are no boundaries in academics (学术), either. Also, the wall-less campuses are believed to be friendly to a more open society. Students who have been separated from the realities (现实) of the world need to step out of their “ivory towers” and experience the society from different angles. Perhaps the open society and wall-less campuses can encourage unexpected creative ideas.
However, taking down walls in campuses still has a long way to go. Traditional beliefs and habits among people are still strong. Most universities don’t want to take down the boundary walls. They worry that it may bring danger to the school safety and bother the students and staff members there as they can’t focus their attention.
Although some efforts to take down physical walls have failed, it doesn’t matter. Tearing down the walls in our minds is more important. An open “no-wall” attitude is indeed a trend (趋势) of the future.

The bamboo train is also called “norry” in the Cambodian language. Different from a traditional train, the bamboo train is a bamboo board placed on two sets of wheels. It has a small engine (引擎), usually from a motorcycle.
The bamboo train came around the 1980s, after the Civil War (内战) in Cambodia. This war destroyed many roads and railways in the country. At first, the bamboo train was invented for sending things and people on the railway. Today, it has become a symbol of countryside life in Cambodia and a full experience for visitors.
A bamboo train can carry up to four passengers, not including the driver. It can run up to 40 km/h on the railway. Riding the bamboo train is an unforgettable experience. The journey takes about 30 minutes. During the ride, you can enjoy green fields, small villages and so on in the open air. It costs about 5 dollars each person for one-way trip, and 10 dollars for a round trip.
The bamboo train is available all year round, but the best time to ride it is during the dry season from November to early May. The weather during these months is warm and nice, making it perfect for a ride. Also, keep in mind that the bamboo train can be busy on holidays and weekends, so riding on a weekday might be better if you want a quieter trip.
Riding the bamboo train in Cambodia provides a special mix of history, culture, and fun. If you visit Cambodia, don’t miss the chance to ride the bamboo train!
