Abstract Views
About Abstract Views
Whether infrared, innovative use of light, or a special lens, Abstract Views is about tapping into a different side of plants and gardens using abstract photography. It’s time to enter a parallel world of artistic expression with limitless possibilities. Judges will be looking for the way in which a special technique elevates the message of that particular green subject. People should not be the main focus of your compositions.
Insights
Previous winners tended to choose one abstract photography technique and execute it perfectly. These photographic techniques included: overlaid images, multiple exposures, intentional movement, infrared, modified lenses, shooting through glass and digital textures. Although abstract photography can seem overwhelmingly complex with too much choice, try experimenting with different techniques then pick the most effective one for the feeling you want to communicate.
Wider Benefits
It’s good to see the world differently and with Abstract Views you have the opportunity to improve skills in abstract photography as well as creative communication. Challenge yourself to use a new technique or tool and develop a unique individual style for garden, plant, nature and abstract photography in general.

Chinese tennis has had stars in the past. Notably WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Li Na, who won two majors (Roland Garros 2011, Australian Open 2014) and reached a career-high, No.2. Her influence is evident on the WTA Tour today, with Zheng Qinwen, 21, advancing to the Australian Open final in January.
On the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour, it is Zhang Zhizhen who is flying the flag for his country. The 27-year-old became the first Chinese player to break into the Top 50 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings in singles last month before he won his first ATP Tour doubles title in Marseille in early February.
Zhang revealed that the success of his female compatriots (同胞) is motivating him in his attempts to match their achievements. “On the WTA, Chinese tennis had super successful results already. They had a Grand Slam (大满贯) winner with Li Na and now Zheng reaching the final in Australia,” Zhang said. “It is good. But I am trying to catch them and get better on the ATP Tour.”
“Everyone is different and has a different path,” Zhang said. “You can’t watch those top guys who have great results at 20 or 21 and compare. When I was 21,22, I was struggling. You have to keep moving, keep going forward and realise it can take time. It is not just when you are 20 you are at the top. You need to believe in yourself because perhaps you think you can never break into the Top 100. But now I am in the Top 50. We have to believe that we can do a little bit more.”
Zhang’s patience paid off last year in Madrid, where he became the first Chinese man to reach the quarter-finals at an ATP Masters 1000 event. He has since advanced to the third round at Roland Garros and the US Open, the fourth round at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai and the semi-finals at the ATP 500 in Hamburg.

D. She inspired Chinese young players to advance bravely.
5. What can we know about Zhang Zhizhen

6. What pushed Zhang to fight against the struggles he faced during his early career
A. His desire for fame. B. His ability to compare.
C. His endurance in training. D. His techniques in tennis.
7. What is the purpose of writing this text
A. To report the new achievements of Chinese tennis. B. To explore further development of tennis.
C. To show an amateur can also reach the top. D. To call for participation in this game.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are being used in original ways to support sustainability in remote places. Among the innovators in this space is the Okuafo Foundation, the first Ghana-based winner of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, a global award for sustainability. This organization has developed an AI-powered smartphone app to determine and diagnose diseases in crops at an early stage without the need for an internet connection.
21-year-old co-founder Mustapha Diyaol Haqq recognized the need for such an app while he was working on a project in some of the farming communities in Ghana. “We found out that, even though they were producing food, they faced a lack of access to scientific information, especially when it came to pest infestation;” Haqq says.
The fall army worm (秋夜蛾) attack has affected almost all food and cash crops in the previous few years. However, Haqq says, “We discovered farmers didn’t know what it was.”
The Okuafo app looks at crops, diagnoses diseases and suggests control measures. So far the app has helped 30,000 farmers reduce their crop losses and improve their harvest by as much as50% in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Burkin a Faso.
The idea of using AI to address water waste in agriculture is put forward by Ashwin Madgavkar, who launched Ceres Imaging in California as a graduate student, and whose organization won the Zayed Sustainability Prize in 2020. The idea was motivated by the suffering of the growers in drought-ridden California. Ceres’ aerial (空中的) imaging uses a combination of AI, sensors and patented crop growth models to identify problems as they happen, allowing farmers to make fast changes.
Madgavkar says, “The average grower experiences anywhere from 20 to 200 irrigation issues over the course of a growing season. While in the past, growers had to send workers out to identify these issues in person, our technology makes it possible to detect issues before they are visually apparent and before they impact yield.”
Ensuring there will be enough nutritious food to feed almost 10 billion people by 2050 is one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime. Digital agriculture looks set to transform the way rural communities improve their livelihoods and help ensure food security for all.
8. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “infestation” in paragraph 2
A. Recognition. B. Invasion. C. Survival. D. Export.
9. How does the Okuafo app influence farmers’ life
A. It showed detailed irrigation information. B. It stopped pests’ reproduction process.
C. It helped save water in the African fields. D. It dealt with the possible diseases of crops.
10. What can be inferred from Madgavkar’s words
A. The cell phone can solve 200 problems farmers face.
B. Farmers use the app because it can just increase the yield.
C. His technology is of great benefit to contemporary farmers.
D. Madgavkar developed the app inspired by the situation in California.
11. What does the text mainly discuss
A. The reasons for AI in agriculture. B. The function of AI for food diversity.
C. The ongoing concerns related to agriculture. D. The necessity of applying AI in drought areas.

Art therapy is a kind of treatment that integrates mental health and human services by using the active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience. Its goal is to help people explore self-expression and, in doing so, find new ways to gain personal understanding and develop new self-management skills.
“Art therapy didn’t start to become a formal programme until the 1940s in the US,” says Dr. Cindi Cassady, a senior clinical psychologist. “The creation or appreciation of art is used to help people explore emotions, develop self-awareness, deal with stress, boost self-esteem, and work on social skills.”
The founder of Niyo Arts Gallery that holds art therapy activities shares how art therapy helps people. “A person is mentally ill because of being deviated (偏离) from what he has lived or has gone through. So, when they get time to relax and interact with art which is also spiritual, it helps them a lot psychologically. When they paint, their creativity demonstrates what they think and they can heal through that.”
Art therapy can be employed as a non-verbal alternative to treat a wide range of mental disorders and psychological distress, some of which include ageing-related issues, anxiety, stress, cancer, depression, eating disorders, emotional difficulties, family or relationship problems and post-traumatic stress disorder, to name just a few.
People do not need to have artistic ability or special talent to participate in art therapy, and people of all ages, including children and adults, can benefit from it. Some research suggests that just the presence of art can play a part in boosting mental health.
People often wonder how an art therapy activity differs from an art class. According to Dr. Cassady, an art class is focused on teaching techniques or creating a specific finished product, while art therapy is more about letting clients focus on their inner experience.
While creating art through art therapy, people can focus on their own understanding, imagination, and feelings. Clients are encouraged to create art that expresses their inner world more than making something that is an expression of the outer world, which stimulates the release of dopamine, a chemical that is released when people do something pleasurable that basically makes them feel happier, promoting healing and mental well-being. “Research-based evidence shows that increased levels of this feel-good chemical can be very helpful if you are battling anxiety or depression,” Dr. Cassady says.
12. How did the author first present art therapy
A. By presenting examples. B. By doing comparisons.
C. By giving definitions. D. By quoting sayings.
13. How does art therapy differ from art class
A. It makes clients more productive.
B. It teaches clients more about art techniques.
C. It increases the presence of art in clients’ brain.
D. It encourages clients to take part in various activities.
14. What may best describe art therapy
A. Highly functional. B. Incredibly affordable.
C. Noticeably outdated. D. Academically challenged.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Art Class: A Better Strategy B. Art Therapy: The Best Treatment Ever
C. Mental Treatment: Cindi Cassady’s Career D. Mental Wellbeing: The Essence of Art Therapy

How Wet Weather Affects Human Behavior
“It’s raining. It’s pouring. The old man is snoring (打鼾). He bumped his head when he went to bed, and he couldn’t get up in the morning.” Why couldn’t the old man in the children’s song get up (Let’s kindly suppose that he just didn’t want to get up.) This was possibly because in the absence of sunlight, the body was still producing the hormone melatonin (褪黑素),which makes people sleepy.
There are many ways that rainfall affects human behavior. ____16____
In 2018, researchers from the University of Minnesota and Lanzhou University published a paper. They proposed that decreased rainfall was influential in social upheaval (社会动荡) and the downfall of the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties in ancient China. This is thought to be related to reduced rice cultivation.
____17____ A 2019 New York Times investigation found that murder rates in New York drop significantly on rainy days. Meanwhile, in Britain, Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones of Greater Manchester police published a study in 2023 detailing an analysis of 6.6 million police records over one decade in Manchester. “The research showed that the heavier the rainfall, the lower the recorded crime,” he said.
____18____ This might be because heavy rain stops people from going out to buy alcohol and the reduced alcohol consumption results in fewer crimes.
It’s not all good news though. One study in 2017 concluded that the behavior of children can predict oncoming storms - they were observed to exhibit their worst behavior when barometric pressure (气压) fell. ____19____ Meanwhile, they report much lower levels of life satisfaction than men on rainy days.
For all the complaints about rain, it does have some characteristics that hold broad appeal: The sound of raindrops can be very comforting and often features in sleep-inducing relaxation apps. The theory behind this is that the pitter-patter of raindrops is a form of “pink noise.” ____20____ So if it’s raining where you are, the best thing to do may be to have a nap.
A. The number of complaints is relatively low.
B. Sleep is one of the main aspects according to the former study.
C. But how might rain affect social behavior in the modern world
D. But how much does rain really affect people’s behavior and moods
E. It can decrease brain activity and consequently improves the quality of sleep.
F. Another study found that women are more likely to be affected psychologically by rain.
G. He also found a strong association between heavy rain and relatively few violent crimes recorded.

In the busy world of healthcare, a young nurse named Mary boarded on a journey to specialize in cardiac (心脏的) care, a field as challenging as it was rewarding. With a heart full of hope and a mind eager to learn, Mary began her career at a local hospital, where every day was a new lesson in life and death.
One sunny morning, Mary received an invitation to attend a cardiac arrest (心脏停搏) training course at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Excitement coursed through her veins as she prepared to join her colleagues in a simulation room designed to imitate the intensity of a real emergency. As they gathered, the atmosphere was a mix of nervous energy and focused determination. The training began with a lecture on the latest agreement for responding to cardiac arrests, the importance of every second in saving a life. Mary listened intently, her eyes wide with the gravity of the knowledge being shared. The hands-on practice was where Mary truly came alive. With each attempt, she felt her skills sharpening, her confidence growing. She learned the art of teamwork, the dance of life-saving measures that required understanding and precision.
Her colleagues became her lifeline, and together they navigated the complexities of each situation. The training was not just about the physical act of saving a life; it was about the mental courage required to face the harsh realities of cardiac care. Mary understood that she would carry the weight of her patients’ lives in her hands, and the responsibility was not one to be taken lightly.
As the day drew to a close Mary felt a sense of accomplishment. She knew the road to becoming a cardiac care specialist was long and tough, but she was ready to face the challenges head-on. With each step, she was not just saving lives; she was fulfilling her destiny, one heartbeat at a time. Mary was more than a nurse; she was a guardian of hearts, and her story was just beginning.

【答案】Dear John,
I’m writing to apologize for not being able to accompany you to the cinema this Sunday as we have planned.
Something unexpected has come up at school, requiring that all my class be present on Sunday. As a result, I’m unable to make it to our appointment. I understand how much we were both looking forward to it, and once again, I apologize for any inconvenience caused.
I hope we can reschedule our gathering for another time. Please let me know if there are any alternative dates that work for you.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
At the closing ceremony of the course, Mary suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. The young nurse had gone into cardiac arrest, forcing her colleagues to jump into action and save her life, with no time to review the exact procedures. With quick thinking, they began to revive Mary with chest compression. Luckily, the critical care team from a local hospital was attending a different training course only a few doors down. They rushed in to help guide the nurses through the situation until a doctor and nurse from another department came in with a crash cart. It was only about 15 minutes from the time she fell unconscious to the time she got into an emergency room. It worked out.
Mary came to life with her fellow nurses around her. Their quick reaction saved her, altering her perspective to cherish every moment. They basically pushed her through this whole life-or-death experience, which really changed her viewpoint on how she viewed life. She urged that people hug their family a little longer because it might be the last time they did so and just treasure life for what they’ve been given. This reminder highlights the importance of living intentionally, appreciating relationships, and not taking life for granted. Life is precious and she did not realize how precious it was until she nearly lost it.
