Bob Stockton, my father-in-law, observed his 80th birthday in November 2019. Bob loved sports and was an enthusiastic Yankees (an American professional baseball team based in the New York City) fan, so it was no wonder that over the years, he was an avid (热切的) listener to WEAN radio and, in particular, the afternoon show hosted by Mike Francesa.
Bob had health issues in his later years that limited his mobility, and when he lost his eyesight three years ago, his attachment to his radio and Francesa became more pronounced. He just loved listening to Mike talk about sports and his Yankees each afternoon. Those hours brought him so much pleasure.
Of course, Mike will be leaving on Dec. 15, 2020 after 30 years at the station. Mike lives in the same community where I work on Long Island, and I have gotten to know him over the past 20 years. So when my father-in-law was approaching his special birthday last year, I asked Mike for a favor: to call Bob and wish him a happy birthday.
Mike agreed without hesitation. Two days before the special day, Mike stopped at my workplace. I called Bob at his nursing home and put Mike on the phone. It was a complete surprise to Bob. Mike spent more than 10 minutes wishing Bob a happy birthday and, of course, talking about the Yankees.
When my family celebrated Bob’s birthday two days later, he couldn’t stop talking about the phone call. Over his lifetime, he said it was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for him. Unfortunately, Bob’s health declined (衰退) and he passed away on July 13, 2020. But even in his final months in the hospital and nursing home, he always had a radio set to WEAN to listen each afternoon to Mike Francesa. And he also had the memory of that special phone call for his 80th birthday.
24. What habit did Bob keep for years
A. Playing baseball. B. Checking his eyesight regularly.
C. Listening to a sports program. D. Leading organized cheering for the Yankees.
25. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Ordinary. B. Important. C. Confused. D. Obvious.
26. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Caring. B. Independent. C. Patient. D. Honest.
27. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Call Finally Arrived B. An Unforgettable Birthday Party
C. A Special Gift D. The Big Dream Came True

Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when confronted with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid numbers-related situations, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to the subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Relief comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged. ”
Also, there are ways to manage your math-related stress. If you’re stressed before a math exam, spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist told the BBC. “A fast heartbeat and sweaty palms don’t necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University.
Math doesn’t come easy, no matter how clever you are. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, was a huge fan of mathematics. But his notebooks show that Leonardo da Vinci couldn’t do fractions (分数). He could never grasp, for instance, that dividing a number by one-quarter is the same as multiplying by four, resulting in a higher number than the original.
28. What do we know about math anxiety
A. It is common merely among students.
B. It can cause physical and emotional discomfort.
C. People with math anxiety are often bad at math.
D. It leads to people struggling in their career.
29. Which of the following statements will Daniel Ansari agree with according to his study
A. Math anxiety may contribute to better grades.
B. Bad experience with math can cause cognitive disadvantages.
C. Math anxiety is not related to the ability to solve math problems.
D. Students with math anxiety may indeed experience lower math scores.
30. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article
A. Avoid thinking about failures in math. B. Learn to make sense of your feelings.
C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge. D. Pay little attention to your math anxiety.
31. Why is Leonardo da Vinci’s story mentioned
A. To show that math anxiety is very common.
B. To suggest a way to solve math anxiety.
C. To show it’s not easy for Leonardo da Vinci to learn math.
D. To explain why math is a difficult subject to learn.
D
We all have a tendency to fake laugh, particularly when authority figures in our lives try to make a joke that just doesn’t land. Though it might feel rude not to laugh when your boss or in-laws try to say something funny, pretending to do so might not be much better. It turns out, even if you think that your forced laughing sounds genuine, people are usually pretty good at separating truly spirited belly laughs from fake ones. But how can they possibly know the difference
Well, when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles studied the acoustic (声音的) and perceptual (感知的) differences between real and fake laughter, they found that some of the sounds associated with genuine laughter are “really hard to fake.” In their study, the researchers determined that subjects were only fooled by 37 percent of fake laughter.
The most prominent factor distinguishing real laughter from fake laughter is duration — or, more specifically, the number of breaths taken in between sounds. Since it takes more effort and concentration to fake a laugh, people tend to pause more in between their laughs when they’re faking it. Evidently, that pausing is pretty noticeable.
“A fake laugh is basically an imitation of a real laugh, but produced with a slightly different set of vocal muscles controlled by a different part of our brain,” Greg Bryant, the lead UCLA researcher on the study, explained. “The result is that there are subtle features of the laugh that sound like speech, and recent evidence suggests people are unconsciously quite sensitive to them.”
People have also proven to be emotionally sensitive to laughter as well. “Our brains are very sensitive to the social and emotional significance of laughter,” said Carolyn McGettigan, a scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London.
McGettigan conducted a 2014 study that recorded participants’ brain responses as they listened to the same people produce real laughter by watching funny videos, as opposed to fake laughter. “During our study, when participants heard a laugh, they activated regions of the brain associated with mentalizing in an attempt to understand the other person’s emotional and mental state,” she said.
So, while we may understand that certain social situations sometimes require fake laughter, most of the time, our instincts and emotional intelligence are just too smart to buy into them.
According to McGettigan, that’s a good thing. “Evolutionarily speaking, it’s good to be able to detect if someone is authentically experiencing an emotion or if they’re not,” she said. “Because you don’t want to be fooled.”
32. What did researchers at the University of California want to find out in this study
A. What the difference between a fake laugh and a real one is.
B. Which part of the brain controls the sound of our laughter.
C. Why people need to fake a laugh when they don’t want to.
D. How people can laugh as genuinely as possible when they are faking a laugh.
33. Your forced laughing is more noticeable than you think, mainly because .
A. you seem more concentrated when you laugh for real
B. you take more breaths when you try to fake a laugh
C. a fake laugh often happens after a sudden pause
D. a real laugh usually lasts longer than a fake one
34. Which of the following is true according to Greg Bryant
A. Real laughter is not at all controllable by our brain.
B. People may notice fake laughter without knowing why.
C. People use the same set of muscles to laugh and to speak.
D. Faking a laugh shares the same techniques as making speech.
35. What has Carolyn McGettigan’s 2014 study proven
A. Certain social situations may require us to fake a laugh.
B. Evolution has enabled us to recognize other’s emotions.
C. By instincts, we are able to tell a person’s mental state.
D. We can sense other’s emotional state when they laugh.
