In 2016,I suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression (抑郁症) that is found to make people feel low in the UK between September and April.During that cold and wet period, I got comfort in books.
Books have been used by many to reduce depression.I lose myself into them as thirstily as I usually get my morning coffee. Each Christmas, I have a habit of returning to the old favorite books that make up for my emptiness, such as Jane Eyre. Sometimes, to escape from the cold, I run back to the heat that I am used to, so I will read a lot of books set in Africa.
It became important for me to find a way to escape my sadness in the world of books. And isn't that what art and literature is for?According to JJ Bola, the author of No Place to Call Home, “The world can get you so down that you think you're the only person going through what you're going through. But then you read and you realize that you are not alone; that if someone else has gone through it and survived, then maybe you can, too.”It is this survival that the reader looks for, that is, the understanding that the winter is not so long after all.

Living a healthy lifestyle contains making choices about the foods we eat as well as exercise and other daily activities. The__term__“healthy__lifestyle”__can__be__defined__as__“to__improve__and__protect__one's__health__and__well being”.
For this purpose,a healthy lifestyle can involve good eating habits, regular physical activity and anti alcoholism.
First of all, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle. For instance, rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite (食欲) early in the morning are all reasons why people skip breakfast (不吃早餐). However, most experts think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.Another example is fast food;a hamburger with special sauce and cheese is not exactly considered as a healthy meal. Our society today is busy and on the go at all times. It is much easier to stop and get fast food.As a result, humans become fatter. However, eating low fat meals that include 5 to 9 serving of fruits and vegetables every day is an ideal healthy life plan. Therefore, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Secondly, another way of living a healthy lifestyle is physical activity.Exercise is indeed part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape.Exercise reduces stress and contributes to (有助于) a good sleep. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout his entire life, and it also helps build one's energy and strength. So,physical activity is another way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, another way is anti alcoholism.Addiction to alcohol may cause serious social and public problems. It is accepted that driving after drinking is dangerous.Alcohol is a main factor of traffic deaths.Alcoholism can also lead to diseases, such as heart attack or liver trouble. Thus, anti alcoholism is another way of a healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle can be maintained in three ways:the first way is good eating habits, the second way is regular physical activity and the final way is anti alcoholism.

Tiny microbes(微生物) are at the heart of a new agricultural technique to manage harmful greenhouse gas. Scientists have discovered how microbes can be used to turn carbon dioxide into soil enriching limestone (石灰石), with the help of a type of tree that grows in tropical areas, such as West Africa.
Researchers have found that when the Iroko tree is grown in dry, acidic soil and treated with a combination of natural fungi (霉菌) and other bacteria, not only does the tree grow well, but it also produces the mineral limestone in the soil around its root.
The Iroko tree makes a mineral by combining Ca from the earth with CO2 from the atmosphere. The bacteria then create the conditions under which this mineral turns into limestone. The discovery offers a new way to lock carbon into the soil, keeping it out of the atmosphere. In addition to storing carbon in the trees' leaves and in the form of limestone, the mineral in the soil makes it more suitable for agriculture.
The discovery could lead to reforestation (重新造林) projects in tropical countries, and help reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the developing world. It has already been used in West Africa and is being tested in Bolivia, Haiti and India.
The findings were made in a three year project involving researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh, Granada, Lausanne and Delft University of Technology. The project examined several microbiological methods of locking CO2 as limestone, and the Iroko bacteria way showed best results. Work was funded by the European Commission under the Future & Emerging Technologies (FET) scheme.
Dr Bryne Ngwenya of the University of Edinburgh's School of Geo Sciences, who led the research, said, “By taking advantage of this natural limestone producing process, we have a low tech, safe, readily employed and easily operating way to lock carbon out of the atmosphere, while improving farming conditions in tropical countries.”

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem: school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn't been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out__of__place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt?Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most
This Christmas I was wondering what to give my dad.My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything.I pulled out my phone to read a message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my dad.My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower,a lone dandelion (蒲公英) standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me.My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing.I decided that those words would be my gift to my dad.
I called back.I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift.I sent the photo of the cream colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it.As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe;my dad recited it as much as he did the other.I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it.The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood, I felt that this was a gift that my dad would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame (框架), I knew I had given the perfect gift.

A.Because it was more expensive.
B.Because it was a surprise to her dad.
C.Because it was a homemade gift.
D.Because it was treasured by her father.
10.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To show how to design images for gifts.
B.To suggest making gifts from one's heart.
C.To explain how computers help create gifts.
D.To describe the gifts the author has received.

It's no secret that spring is now starting earlier, but exactly how, why and where this is happening are much more complex questions. Spending 50 years in observing some insects, like aphids (蚜虫), moths(飞蛾) and butterflies, as well as birds in the UK, a group of researchers, led by Dr James Bell of the Rothamsted Insect Survey, have tried to answer some of these questions.
On the one hand, the results confirm current understanding. They reveal that aphids, moths and butterflies are now flying much earlier than in the mid 20th century and that birds are laying eggs earlier. However, this early awakening isn't uniform across species and the degree of change varies depending on the location and habitat. As a result, the researchers have learned that wildlife may fail to match the life cycles of other species that they rely on for food.
Some of this variation is related to differences in the species themselves—moths, which turn from caterpillars (毛虫) to flying adults early in the year, seem to be more responsive to climate change than those which change later. In other cases, the geographical location is key. Spring activity generally occurs later in the north of the country, though the specifics vary from species to species.
In addition, the study also finds that woodland habitats, which are thought to offer animals a more stable climate, and which researchers hoped might present a “buffer (缓冲)” to climate change, did not appear to do so. It is this finding in particular that concerns scientists. “We should have seen some sort of buffer offered by the woodland that would protect wildlife against the rises in temperature, but actually we didn't see that,” explains Dr Bell. “We have to guess that even though woodlands have stable micro climates, they are advancing at the same rate too. Though the researchers will carry out further research to establish exactly why this is the case, the all along outcome is very clear: All species are now at greater risk than previously thought.”
11.What did the researchers try to answer in their study
A.Which species can sense spring very early
B.Is spring coming much earlier now
C.What is the detailed information about early spring
D.What is people's common understanding of early spring
12.According to the researchers, what might be the result of early awakening
A.The increased chance of insects being eaten.
B.The change in some birds' egg laying habits.
C.The loss of some species' natural habitat.
D.The break in some wildlife's food chain.
13.In paragraph 3, the author mainly talks about ________.
A.the reasons for some species' early awakening
B.species' responses to climate change
C.the influences brought by early spring
D.the distribution of species in the UK
14.What do we know about the woodland habitats
A.They've failed to work as expected.
B.They're now in quite severe conditions.
C.They've been less affected by climate change.
D.They're widely distributed throughout the UK.
15.What does Dr Bell think of the result of their research
A.Desired. B.Worrying.
C.Beneficial. D.Encouraging.

Gifted students in the Wichita Falls Independent School District in Texas have the opportunity to travel to STEM facilities and learn coding and other technical skills, but the transportation is not convenient.“We just started talking about, ‘Wouldn't it be cool if we were able to design a mobile STEM lab?’”says Dr.Peter E. Griffiths, the district's associate superintendent (负责人). Educators soon realized that they could retrofit (改造) an old bus into a mobile STEM lab, which would provide increased access to career and technical education (CTE) experiences for students.
Districts sold off buses when the vehicles became too old.Griffiths and his colleagues decided to retrofit one of those old vehicles.“Give me your ‘best worst’ bus,” Griffiths said to the transportation department.Soon the process of transforming began.Griffiths reached out to Reuben Rodriguez, the owner of a local car company, and explained what they wanted to do.Rodriguez agreed to work with the district on the price on condition that they could send CTE students to lend a hand with some of the building work. And bringing the bus from the dream stage to fruition (实现) has taken a lot of joint efforts of educators and the community.
Called STEAM Machine, the bus looks like a device from a video game or a real life toy bricks truck, and rides as a mobile maker space.“It has two touch screen TVs outside. It comes complete with drones and drone obstacle courses that will help students learn about coding in an enjoyable way,” Griffiths says.“Those are things that a lot of these kids have never experienced before.”
To drive the bus, the district has hired a retiring teacher who will take the bus to various schools and engage in different lessons with students and educators.“We were so concerned about kids losing out on experiences before, and this is a solution. We aren't going to let this go.The STEAM Machine will be equipped with all the necessary materials and resources, and it may change the way students learn and engage with their education,” Griffiths said.

When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive. After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day a tragedy (悲剧) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

A.a series of work
B.a group of members' working together
C.hard work
D.working for long hours
9.What did the writer learn from the ant tragedy a few years later
A.Working together is useless.
B.Teamwork is important.
C.He can't accept adversity.

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as the primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It's faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking__stock__in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I'm familiar with it.”
“I'm not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital, said,“Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of the writers.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory (必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
