In my first year living in Los Angeles, I worked as a birthday-party clown. which made me struggle with my identity. I saw myself as a filmmaker, but everyone else only saw me as a clown. This job itself involved hiding my true self; I wore makeup and sometimes even masks to cover my face.
For some parties, I had to dress as specific characters. The company would drop off costumes in a trash bag at a CVS parking lot, which felt like a bad drug deal. Instead of getting drugs, I received a smelly costume that had been worn by many failed actors. I would be told to dress as “Mickey Mouse” or “Sponge Bob Square Pants,” but since those are trademarked characters, I had to go as “Ricky Mouse” or “Sponge Guy Short Pants.”
One night, I was given a costume to be Batman. At the time, I wore a big mustache, which I thought would be a problem for parents. I decided not to shave because I didn’t want to admit I was more of a clown than an artist. The next day, I parked far from the party site, so the kids wouldn’t see Batman arriving in my PT Cruiser. As I walked towards the party, I worried that my lack of surprise would ruin the experience.
As I got closer, I regretted not shaving. When the kids finally saw my face, they burst into laughter, and I felt embarrassed. However, their laughter soon turned into cheers and applause, which surprised me. I started to feel warm and supported, something new for me. Inspired, I decided to make an entrance and began running towards the party, which made the kids cheer even louder. In that moment, I truly felt like Batman.
When I arrived, the birthday boy’s dad laughed and said, “I told you, son. Batman has a mustache.” I was confused until I saw the birthday cake, which featured a Batman with a thick black mustache just like mine. The kids had initially laughed at the cake, insisting that Batman didn’t have a mustache, but the dad insisted he just shaves it for movies. My mustache accidentally helped convince the kids that I was the real Batman.
That day, I realized I might not have been the hero they expected, but I was the hero they needed. I struggled with my identity as a filmmaker or a clown, but at that moment, I knew I was making a difference in those kids’ lives.

The halo effect (光环效应) is an interesting cognitive bias (偏见) that significantly impacts how we understand others. This bias occurs when our overall impression of a person influences our feelings and judgments about specific qualities they possess. Essentially, if someone leaves a positive impression, it can enhance how we regard their particular characteristics. This often leads us to make baseless assumptions about their abilities and qualities based on a singular positive quality.
A typical illustration of the halo effect can be seen in our perceptions of celebrities. Famous individuals are frequently viewed as attractive, successful, and charismatic. Consequently, their public images lead many to assume that they are also intelligent, kind-hearted, and humorous. Such sweeping generalizations arise not from substantial evidence but from the overall impression formed by their fame and appearance.
The term “the halo effect” was introduced by psychologist Edward Thorndike in a 1920 publication. In his research, Thorndike explored how military officers rated various qualities in their soldiers, including leadership abilities, physical attractiveness, and intelligence. He aimed to understand the interaction between a single characteristic and the overall judgments made about other characteristics. His findings were revealing; high assessments in one area frequently correlated with high ratings in others, indicating a pattern where positive perceptions are interconnected. Conversely, negative evaluations in one characteristic tended to lower ratings in other areas as well.
This cognitive bias emerges in numerous real-world environments, one of the most common being the workplace. Experts argue that the halo effect plays a critical role in performance reviews. For instance, an employee’s enthusiastic behavior or optimistic attitude may mask a lack of technical skills or knowledge. This often results in managers and coworkers rating such employees more favorably than they deserve based on their actual performance. Additionally, research has indicated that physical attractiveness not only enhances an individual’s self-confidence but also positively influences their financial prospects. Attractive people may receive more attention and opportunities, leading to greater overall success.
Despite our understanding of the halo effect, completely avoiding its influence on our perceptions and decisions is exceedingly out of the question. It is only one of many cognitive biases that contribute to rapid decision-making and consequently, errors in judgment. Even with awareness, these ingrained biases can shape our thoughts and behaviors unconsciously. Thus, being mindful of the halo effect can help us strive for more objectivity in our assessments, leading to better decision-making in both personal and professional contexts.
46. Which of the following is a demonstration of the halo effect
A. Friendly colleague gets promoted over others. B. Attractive person also deserves high pay.
C. Skilled worker produces quality results consistently. D. Friendly coworker is seen as an expert.
47. Why are celebrities used as an example in the text
A. To prove a new theory. B. To illustrate a concept.
C. To put forward a definition. D. To offer background information.
48. What was the purpose of Thorndike’s original research
A. To rate soldiers’ leadership ability and intelligence.
B. To determine the indirect effects of personal judgments.
C. To explore how one quality affects overall evaluations.
D. To define the characteristics of attractive individuals.
49. What can we learn from the example in paragraph 4
A. Unfair evaluations and chances can result from the halo effect.
B. Positive qualities always correlate with strong job performance.
C. Enthusiastic behavior always improves performance evaluations.
D. Enthusiasm and attractiveness are essential for workplace success.
50. What does the author think of avoiding the halo effect
A. Necessary. B. Advisable.
C. Impossible. D. Meaningful.
D
“Find your passion!” is common advice in American culture, but is it sound The idea of “finding” a passion suggests it already exists and simply needs to be discovered. However, science shows that passions are developed. They often start with curiosity, and through repeated engagement, positive experiences, and accumulated knowledge, people begin to value and internalize (内化) an activity, turning what was once inerely interesting into a passion.
Misunderstanding this process can limit progress. Our research highlights the importance of adopting a more accurate view of how interests develop. We use the framework of “fixed” and “growth” mindsets (思维框架) to explain this concept. A fixed mindset sees intellectual abilities and passions as natural and unchangeable, while a growth mindset believes that skills and passions can be developed over time.
A growth mindset has many advantages. For example, those with a fixed mindset may avoid exploring new areas. In our studies, arts students with a fixed mindset were less interested in scientific topics compared to those with a growth mindset, and vice versa for science students with a fixed mindset toward the arts. Fixed mindsets can also block creativity, as those with such mindsets are less likely to integrate diverse disciplines in problem-solving.
People with a fixed mindset often expect their passions to emerge easily. In one study, we introduced participants to the science of black holes through an engaging video. When asked to read a more technical article on the subject, those with a fixed mindset grew frustrated and lost interest. In contrast, those with a growth mindset maintained their curiosity despite the difficulty.
Can a growth mindset be taught Our research involving over 700 first-year liberal arts students suggests it can. Most students had strong interests in the arts but little in math or science. We divided them into two groups: one received an intervention focusing on cultivating interests, and the other took a study skills module. The intervention included writing exercises to help students think of interests as developed. not fixed. By the end of the year, those who received the intervention were more interested in math and science and earned better grades in those subjects than their peers.
This study suggests that schools can help students develop a growth mindset of interest. However, individuals can also foster this mindset independently. Realizing that passions aren’t found but cultivated can lead to greater curiosity and resilience. The saying, “Find something you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life,” should be updated: working at loving what you do can make you more creative and fulfilled.
51. What does the phrase “Find your passion!” suggest, according to the passage
A. Passions exist and need discovery. B. Passion is a natural part of curiosity.
C. Passion exists and develops naturally. D. Passions come naturally and require effort.
52. What do the underlined words “this process” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The discovery of finding interests and passions.
B. The development of interests into passions.
C. The impact of fixed and growth mindsets.
D. The gradual change from passions to interests.
53. According to the passage, what effect does a fixed mindset have on creativity
A. It enhances creativity by focusing on strengths.
B. It decreases interest in combining knowledge from courses.
C. It encourages students to engage with diverse disciplines.
D. It limits creativity by discouraging integration of subjects.
54. According to the result of the research in paragraph 5, the intervention group ______.
A. showed increasing interests in writing exercises
B. maintained strong preferences for the arts and science
C. focused more on study skills module than before
D. developed broader interests and excelled in academics
55. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Cultivating Passion: Embrace a Growth Mindsets.
B. The Science of Finding Your Passion.

After months of setbacks at work, I felt emotionally burnt out. Deadlines were piling up, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to get ahead. In desperate need of a break, I decided to take a few days off and go hiking in the mountains. I hoped the peaceful surroundings would help me clear my mind and gain some fresh perspectives.
The first day was calm and beautiful, and I felt a bit of relief. But on the second day, things didn’t go as planned. I decided to take a challenging trail, hoping it would help me push through my frustrations. I thought that conquering this trail would lift my spirits and allow me to gain clarity. Unfortunately, I got lost. The trail was confusing, and I soon found myself deep in the forest, with no idea how to get back to where I started.
My phone had no signal, and I started to feel overwhelmed. I sat on a rock, feeling as if I was at the end of my rope. My thoughts drifted back to work—how nothing was going right, how I was failing at everything. I was in a bad place, emotionally, and now physically lost in the woods.
Just as I was about to give up, I heard voices. Two hikers, a man and a woman, appeared through the trees. They asked if I needed help, and I explained my situation. Without hesitation, they offered to guide me back to the main trail.
As we walked together, I shared my feelings of frustration with them. They listened patiently and said something that really stuck with me. The woman said, “Sometimes, you have to step back to move forward. Don’t be too hard on yourself.”
By the time we reached the trail, I felt lighter. I was grateful for their kindness and understanding. Before we parted ways, the man said, “When you’re able, remember to help others who feel lost.”
I realized then how important it is to offer a helping hand when someone needs it. I’m thankful for meeting these two strangers, and I promised myself I’d do the same for others in the future.

【答案】Hi James,
It’s great to connect with you here on Red Note! I’m more than happy to share some insights about how Chinese high school students use social media.
TikTok is one of the most favored apps for its short videos which cover a wide range of topics from daily life moments to creative arts. WeChat is another essential part of our digital lives where we chat with friends and family and follow official accounts for news and learning resources.
In daily life, I often use social media to keep up with what’s happening around the world and stay connected with friends. Moreover, I enjoy posting content related to traditional festivals, calligraphy, and classic literature on TikTok.
Looking forward to hearing more about your side of the story.
Yours,
Li Jin
