55-year-old Rob Kenney, who grew up without a father, has been doing his part to make a difference in the lives of kids today.
He created a YouTube channel, called Dad, How Do I, which aims to give youths the valuable lessons a father is meant to give. Launched only two months ago, his channel already has more than two million subscribers (订阅者). Rob teaches children and adults, many of whom are also without a dad, basic skills such as how to tie a tie, how to cook meals, how to repair a lamp and many more.
“I didn’t start this to make money,” Rob told his viewers. “I just thought I was going to help a few people... 30 or 40 subscribers... but it’s turned into a way more than that. And please don’t think I am only aiming this at young men. It is for anybody who feels that they need to learn something.”
Now that his channel has had such huge unexpected success, Rob plans to give his earnings to a number of international charities.
Many viewers have been touched by the warm words Rob shares in his videos. Such simple words, like “I love you”, “You’ve done a good job” and “I’m proud of you,” can have a deep impact on many children, even some adults. He starts each video with an enthusiastic “Hey, kids!” — but Keiha Danaher said that she was a 33-year-old woman, and she answered back crying, saying, “Hi, dad!”
Rob’s childhood story makes him a role for the kids who watch his channel. By the age of 14, his parents had divorced. He had to move in with his elder brother and learn from the tough life experiences without parents in his life. But that didn’t prevent him from being a good father to his children. His experience shows his viewers that there is always opportunity in the face of difficulties.
24.Why did Rob Kenney create the channel Dad, How Do I in the beginning
A.To cheer up those who feel upset.
B.To make some money to support his family.
C.To teach children and adults some useful life skills.
D.To offer youths advice on how to get on well with others.
25.What can we infer from Rob’s words in the third paragraph
A.Rob’s videos are only intended for young men.
B.Subscribers are mainly made up of poor people.
C.The number of subscribers is larger than Rob expected.
D.Rob guesses there won’t be more people to subscribe his channel.
26.What does Rob plan to do in the future
A.Make his videos more entertaining and instructive.
B.Help more children improve their intelligence.
C.Let more people have sympathy for him.

B.The words in Rob’s videos are warm and encouraging.
C.Rob’s experiences remind them of their own.

The Great Barrier Reef is the result of millions of years of continental (大陆的) shifts, sea-level changes, and layers of coral (珊瑚) growth. The Reef was built over millennia (数千年) by coral attaching itself to existing dead coral, as it continued to reach toward the light. Like most living things, coral needs the sun to survive and generally lives in shallow waters, where enough sunlight can penetrate (穿透) the water. Sea levels began to rise at the end of the last most recent ice age, about 14,000 years ago. As a result, the previously exposed Reef was covered by water and the coral expanded along the length of the newly revived Reef.
Climate change is having a dangerous impact on this natural wonder. Although coral and algae (海藻) have evolved despite climate change, allowing them to survive, coral has begun producing products that are poisonous to the Reef and block the growth of algae. Additional concerns include the overwhelming amount of pollution and chemical runoff into the water which harms the already affected coral and reduces biodiversity.
The Great Barrier Reef is well known as one of the best diving destinations in the world. You can do your part to help scientists preserve the Reef’s ecosystem while visiting. By paying a visit to the Reef, visitors pay a reef tax that will be used for the management and conservation of the Reef. A lesser-known contribution visitors can make to Reef preservation is signing up for REEFSearch. After signing up, you’ll be sent a field guide that will teach you how to collect information that scientists can use to study the Reef’ s health. During each dive, using the information sent to you, you will look for key species, check for coral conditions, and make note of any garbage found near the Reef. These small contributions can ultimately have a large impact and save one of the great wonders of the world.
28.Why does coral live in shallow waters
A.It must coexist with algae. B.It needs sufficient sunlight.
C.It has to stick to dead ancestors. D.It has to avoid deep-sea pollution.
29.What drove the coral to stretch across the new Reef
A.The rise of sea levels. B.The exposure of it to air.
C.The change of its habitat. D.The threat from its enemies.
30.What is an impact climate change has on the Reef
A.Coral cannot survive. B.Algae become harmful.
C.Algae cannot be seen on the surface. D.Coral produces something poisonous to the Reef.
31.Which of the following should you do after signing up for REEFSearch
A.Study the Reef’ s formation. B.Find new habitats for coral.
C.Gather information on the Reef’ s health. D.Search for dangerous species around coral.

Madagascar, the world’s second-largest island country located off Africa’s eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar’s wildlife creates some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon’i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.
Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth’s eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2, 800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 meters. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar’s most visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa’s oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.
The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or visitor center and generates little money for local communities.
Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.
32.What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in the first paragraph mean
A.New. B.Cultural. C.Striking. D.Changing.
33.What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs
A.It is a big forest. B.It has eight baobab species.
C.It consists of many different plants. D.It has Africa’s oldest baobabs.
34.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The risk to local baobab trees.
B.Natural disasters in Madagascar.
C.Poor living conditions in Madagascar.
D.The quality customer service of the avenue.
35.What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph
A.Curiosity. B.Caution. C.Hopefulness. D.Sympathy.

Many quick service restaurant owners are looking ahead to a future where automation will play an important role. They believe it will be the key to greatly 56 (increase) their thin profits and allow their workers to shine in the tasks no machine can do.

Take Flippy, the arm-like robotic kitchen assistant 59 an example. It turns burgers over, cooking them to 60 (perfect), and lets its co-workers know the orders are ready. Not competing for people’s jobs, such robots 61 (design) to be cooperative ones, the cost-effective machines created to work with humans, not against them.
Quick service restaurants with tools like Flippy are the kind of places 62 you keep coming back--you know the staff will always have time to give you 63 answer to your detailed question and you will have your order on time, perfectly cooked.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
I was doing homework with my friend Ollie at his home when he randomly started scribbling (乱画) a fish. But not just any fish. This fish was riding a skateboard and blowing a bubble that said “I’d rather be skating!”I laughed and drew a sea star saying “Quit fooling around and get to work!”
Just then, Ollie’s grandma Abuela and her friend Mr. Goldberg came into the kitchen. Mr. Goldberg was in charge of the local animal shelter. Abuela poured their tea and inquired about how things were going at the animal shelter. Mr. Goldberg sighed, shaking his head. He explained that not enough people were adopting pets, resulting in too many animals without homes.
Overhearing the conversation, Ollie offered to adopt some excitedly. But Abuela said that one noisy parrot was plenty for this house.
“Blue isn’t noisy,” defended Ollie. “He’s just musical.”
“I’d have a whole farm full of animals if I could,” I said. “But my parents say two cats and a hamster (仓鼠) are enough.”
Mr. Goldberg said he kept trying to attract people to adopt animals, but found it hard to get people’s attention these days. Ollie drew a sad whale, and I wrote the words “Please adopt me” in the shape of a whale spout (喷水). Mr. Goldberg took a look at our drawings and made favorable comments on them, saying that these clever talking animals just might grab people’s attention. And he asked us if we were willing to design a poster for his animal shelter, a proposal we happily accepted. We decided to draw some ideas on our own and meet up again the next afternoon.
That night, when I was sitting in the living room brainstorming ideas for the poster, my little brother brought in our hamster, Mr. Nibbles, to give him a little run-around time. He made a hamster playground out of couch pillows and Mr. Nibbles began to run around merrily.
Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind.

We decided to make both Mr. Nibbles and Blue the stars of the poster.

W: If you have an average of 10 people on each of those six social networks who send you messages every day, that’s at least 60 conversations! Let’s say you spend as little as one minute on each conversation ... That’s a whole hour! But you would probably spend two or three times that much for each person ... What a waste of time!

W:What’s happening on the bridge
M:I couldn’t tell. I just saw the road signs, so I turned around and took the long way here.
W:Well, it looks like we missed the worst of the weather. It was pouring this morning.
M:That’s good. I can see the sky is clearing up and the wind has stopped. What are those tents for
W:They’re for the food fair. It will close soon, so you’d better get over there if you want to eat. Unfortunately, you came a bit late for the music.
M:So what is this event all about, anyway
W:It’s just a community festival we have every year. All the food, entertainment and activities represent the many cultures in our city.
M:Cool. What’s happening across the street at the stadium I saw that the local TV stations are all set up there.
W:That’s where all the dancing and sports events will take place. This area is for families. I saved us this spot on the grass here.
M:That sounds fun. I’ll go grab something at the tents, and then meet you back here.

Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind. Why not put Mr. Nibbles on the poster I eagerly sketched out a design featuring Mr. Nibbles in a playful pose, promoting the joy of pet adoption, "Want a pet to play with Go get one in the local animal shelter." I admired my work with great satisfaction. The next afternoon, Ollie came over with his notebook. His design was centered on his parrot, Blue, who was singing beautifully "Oh! Be our hero! Give shelter pets a chance to be loved!" We exchanged a smile and engaged in a discussion about the final draft of the poster.
We decided to make both Mr. Nibbles and Blue the stars of the bining my playful hamster and Ollie's melodious parrot, we created a vibrant and eye-catching design. After adding the final touches, we proudly presented our final creation to Mr. Goldberg. His faces lit up as he praised the creativity and heartfelt message behind our design. A couple of months later, Mr. Goldberg shared the exciting news that lots of people had come in after seeing the posters. And some of them decided to donate or adopt! We hadn't expected our poster would cause such a sensation, but we did know our small bit of help would create a meaningful ripple.
