Dear Bruin Community:
Due to the destructive fires in our region, we have made the decision to cancel undergraduate classes and move graduate courses to remote instruction for the next two days. While there remains no immediate fire danger to our campus, given an expected change in wind direction in the hours ahead, it is likely that the air quality in Westwood will worsen. We will continue to monitor conditions in the area and are prepared to further adjust campus operations if need be.
For employees, if you are able to work remotely, please contact your department director. They are asked to work directly with their employees to meet any critical staffing and operational needs on campus, while being understanding and flexible.
Our UCLA Health facilities will remain open and fully operational so we can continue treating patients during this time. For those who work in the UCLA Health clinical areas, you will receive further communications from UCLA Health.
Even as UCLA's central focus is on protecting our students, faculty and staff, our university is doing what it can to support the broader L.A.community in a time of need.We are treating patients around the clock at our UCLA Health hospitals and adjusting facilities operations to preserve water for first responders. UCLA organizations have opened up their doors to provide free meals and other support to the community as well.
I want to personally thank our teams who have gone above and beyond to support Bruins and our neighboring communities during these times. Together, we will navigate this challenging period.
Sincerely,
Julio Frenk
Chancellor

On a low hill near the coast of Maine, colorful flowers glow in the May sunlight, while new plants emerge from the soil. This is Dandy Ram Farm, run by Bo Dennis, who grows flowers for weddings and other special events.
“When people come to us, we say, ‘This is what we’ re good at: local, sustainably grown flowers,’ ” Dennis says. “Sometimes clients ask for out-of-season flowers. I say, ‘Great! Have a good celebration. I don't think we' re the right fit for you. ’ ”
What Dennis grows won't be found in supermarkets or big-box stores. The flowers that fill those shelves are imports, and they are part of an enormously successful international market that sells blooms thousands of miles from their fields of origin and earns more than $25 billion every year. But pesticides and other agrochemicals required to sustain that scale of production can injure workers and their families. Studies in Ecuador, the world's third-largest flower exporter, link flower farm chemicals to children's attention problems and birth abnormalities. And the risks extend to people around the world. In Belgium, florists (花商) with imported flowers had unhealthy levels of pesticide chemicals on their gloves, levels high enough to burn the skin if it wasn't protected.
In response, small U. S. operations such as Dennis's Dandy Ram Farm are building a new agricultural model——a“slow flower movement,” which offers a cleaner, greener alternative to modern floral production.
Flowers are so present in our lives that we almost do not see them: wrapped in paper in every market, placed in a vase on a table in any cafe. But while they are quotidian, they memorialize the most important days of our lives. We invest them with so much meaning that we demand they always be perfect. But those perfect plants don't grow that way without assistance. They are routinely treated with chemicals to ensure they meet our expectations.
Dennis and other growers aim to protect ecosystems while bringing a bit of beauty — wild, imperfect, unpredictable — back into the world.
24. Why does Bo Dennis turn down some clients' requests
A. He sticks to eco-friendly farming.
B. He wants to provide perfect flowers.
C. He fails to compete with large stores.
D. He sells flowers for specific occasions.
25. What concern does paragraph 3 raise about the global flower industry
A. Its economic costs.
B. Its health impacts.
C. Its growth prospects.
D. Its technological challenges.
26. What does the underlined word“quotidian” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Harmful. B. Perfect.
C. Common. D. Meaningful.
27. Which saying best reflects Dennis's philosophy on flower growing
A. Let things be as they are.
B. All good things take time.
C. Perfection is the enemy of good.
D. Growth requires careful planning.

Some people think they are immune to ads. They might not have heard of the mere exposure effect — a psychological phenomenon where we tend to like things the more we are exposed to them.
When we plot the mere exposure effect on a graph with preferences on one axis (轴) and repetitions on the other, we will see that it takes about 15 repeats for the effect to reach its full potential. If the exposure is too excessive (过度), people get annoyed. And if they didn't like the thing initially, repeating it can make it worse.
There are two main explanations for the phenomenon. The first is certainty. Our minds naturally learn to be careful around new things that could potentially harm us. If we see something repeatedly without bad consequences, we are led to believe it is safe. The second is perceptual fluency. We are also hardwired to prefer simple things that take little mental load.Difficult tasks like figuring out something new take lots of attention and time, which is why we try to avoid them.
Known for discovering the effect was psychologist Robert Zajonc, who tested how subjects responded to specific symbols. A group of people were shown a series of random shapes which changed so quickly that it was impossible to notice that some were repeated. When the subjects were asked which shapes they found most pleasing, they chose those to which they had been exposed the most often, even though they had no conscious awareness of that.
The results showed that changes in preferences caused by repeated exposures depend not on any prior subjective and conscious evaluations of the stimulus but rather on results from the objective history of exposures alone.
Now tell us what you think about ads. If mere exposure to them makes us like things we otherwise wouldn't, should billboards (广告牌) be banned from the public area
28. Which of the following graphs best illustrates the mere exposure effect
29. According to Zajonc's experiment, what drives changes in preferences
A. Random variation. B. Objective analysis.
C. Subjective judgment. D. Subconscious familiarity.
30. Which promotional activity shows the application of the mere exposure effect
A. A novelist organizes a book signing event.
B. A game studio develops a challenging mode.
C. A singer buys hot recommendations on a music app.
D. A fashion brand reintroduces certain classic designs.
31. Why does the author mention ads at the end of the text
A. To criticize fake advertising.
B. To oppose outdoor advertising.
C. To point out the drawbacks of ads.
D. To caution against the influence of ads.

Twenty years ago my husband, Mark, broke his left ankle and was in a cast for nearly two months. Last year he broke the other ankle. But this time, after surgery, his doctor surprised us by instructing Mark to walk on it two weeks later.
It turns out the standard advice to stay off a broken leg bone for at least six weeks is based less on scientific evidence and more on cultural caution — physicians like to play it safe. But now studies show that complications are no more likely with early weight-bearing than with a long delay. Except in a few complex cases, walking around earlier helps broken bones heal.
If you are fully immobilized, “you come out of the cast with a weak leg that takes forever to overcome,” says Alex Trompeter of St. George’ s University of London. “The rate at which you lose muscle mass is far faster than the rate at which you gain it.” You' re slow to build bone, too.Consider astronauts. After six months in zero gravity at the International Space Station, they lose10 percent of their bone density, and to counteract that loss they do exercises that approximate bearing weight.
When a bone breaks, surgery is usually performed — first a“reduction” to realign (重新排列) the pieces of bone and then“fixation” to hold them in place. The bone then heals naturally by forming callus (骨痂), which then turns into bone. The right amount of load is critical to this process. Too little results in no callus; too much prevents the broken pieces from growing together again. Surgical implants hold the bone in place until that process is complete.
A randomized controlled trial published in The Lancet in 2024 found that early weight-bearing after two weeks posed no greater risk than waiting six weeks and improved function.“Surgeons just needed a push,” says Bretherton, who led the study. He hopes this evidence“gives them that confidence.”
As for my husband, within two months, the point at which he was just coming out of a cast last time, his scar was fully healed, and he was walking normally again.
32. What does the author highlight by mentioning astronauts in paragraph 3
A. The importance of exercise to overall health.
B. The negative effects of inactivity on bone health.
C. The need for surgical intervention in bone healing.
D. The role of weight-bearing in reducing bone density.
33. What are the consequences of too little load and too much load on a healing bone, respectively
A. Misaligned bones and weakened bones.
B. Delayed bone growth and displaced bones.
C. Increased injuries and higher complications.
D. A slower recovery and a lack of callus formation.
34. What does Bretherton suggest surgeons do
A. Avoid unnecessary risks. B. Boost patients' confidence.
C. Revise their clinical practices. D. Hold more expert consultations.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Healing Broken Legs Faster B. Why Exercises Prevent Bone Loss
C. Improving Surgery for Bone Breaks D. How Callus Speeds up Bone Healing

How to Use Your Inner Voice
We all have an inner voice, and while it can be supportive, it can also become overly critical. The good news: 36 Here are three science-backed strategies to refine(改善) your inner dialogue, inspired by the groundbreaking work of psychologist Ethan Kross.
Distancing Ourselves from Negative Thoughts
37 Kross's research on self-distancing offers a powerful solution. By referring to yourself in the third person or using your own name, you create psychological distance which reduces emotional reactivity. For instance, instead of thinking, “I'm failing”, try telling yourself, “[Add Your Name], you' re learning through this challenge.” This simple shift can help you approach problems with clarity and objectivity.
Inner Coach vs. Inner Critic
38 It helps us plan, solve problems, and motivate ourselves. But it can also make us more anxious and hurt our relationships. Kross recommends that we should make the most of its good points while keeping its bad ones in check. When you' re faced with self-criticism, try shifting to your inner coach for guidance. These slight changes in how we talk to ourselves can lower our stress and help us solve problems better.
Growing through Positive Self-Dialogue
Building a constructive inner voice requires practice. Just before bed, journal about a moment where positive self-talk helped you. 39 Over time, this habit can help reinforce a growth mindset and prepare you to tackle challenges with more confidence.
Conclusion
By practicing self-distancing, reframing criticism, and reflecting on positive moments, you can turn your inner voice into a source of strength and clarity. 40
A. Our inner voice cuts both ways.
B. Feeling overwhelmed by your inner critic
C. Talking to yourself empowered you during tough times.
D. Self-talk can be transformed into a tool for growth and success.
E. We can learn to identify negative thought patterns and avoid them.
F. Start today — because your inner voice shapes how you show up in the world.
G. Reflect on how it shaped your response and what you can carry into tomorrow.

My closest neighbor, Mrs. Harrington, was mysterious. From the moment I moved into the neighborhood, she had been distant, almost to the point of being rude. She avoided eye contact and brushed off any attempts at conversation.
Every day, she would head to the old shack(棚屋) 20 feet away from her house at 9 a. m.and again at 9 p. m. She always had two shopping bags in hand, and she would go into the shack for about 20 minutes before returning to her house.
One afternoon, while I was out for a walk, I accidentally approached the shack. The moment Mrs. Harrington saw me approaching, she dashed out of the door, her eyes wide with anger. “Stay away! I' ll call the police!” she screamed, her voice high-pitched and desperate.
Astonished, I began to apologize and wanted to clarify that I hadn't meant to intrude (闯入), but Mrs. Harrington cut me off with another sharp outburst, demanding that I leave immediately. The unfriendliness in her tone made it clear that arguing would be useless. I turned and walked back home. The way Mrs. Harrington screamed at me and the panic in her eyes didn't feel right. I decided to investigate.
One night, I slipped out of my front door when she was back inside her house and all the lights were off. Reaching the shack, I noticed there was a large padlock on the door. I took a closer look and spotted a small gap in the wooden door, just big enough to peek through. Ihesitated for a moment but finally pressed my nose against the door and peeked inside through the gap.
The inside was dark, but as my eyes adjusted, I nearly fainted at what I saw. Inside the shack were dozens of dogs and they were nothing more than skin and bones! What was going on here Were they being mistreated by her I started pulling at the lock, trying to force it open.Suddenly, a light flicked on inside Mrs. Harrington's house. I froze, realizing that I'd woken her up.

Dear Edward,
I'm thrilled to hear about your event on traditional Chinese sports.I highly recommend Tai
Chi,an ancient martial art that emphasizes balance, fluid movements, and inner harmony.
Tai Chi is ideal for beginners,as it requires no specialized equipment and accommodates all
fitness levels. Its slow, deliberate motions not only enhance flexibility and coordination but also
cultivate mental tranquility, making it particularly appealing to foreigners seeking both exercise and
relaxation. Moreover,as an embodiment of Chinese philosophy,Tai Chi offers profound cultural
