Without a smartphone and connection to social media, a 46-year-old American lives a simple life in China. He spends his time translating(翻译)Chinese classic works into English.
The man's Chinese name is Dai Ling." Ling means "mountain" in Chinese, which tells something about his life. Dai Ling lives in a small house on a mountain in Qingdao, Shandong Province. For the past 10 years, Dai has translated Tao Te Ching(《道德经》),a classic text written by Laozi, one of China's greatest philosophers(哲学家) who lived about 2, 500 years ago. Tao Te Ching is written in classical
Chinese, and many of the words are very hard to understand. "In order to have a better understanding of Tao Te Ching, I bought many dictionaries on ancient Chinese. I found the hidden meanings of the text, and then translated them into simple English," Dai said. And to stop himself from being influenced byother translators, Dai had never read other translations of Tao Te Ching.
What drove him to come to China and learn about Chinese culture His answer went back to his university life in the 1990s, when a history teacher gave him a copy of Tao Te Ching." After reading the text, I went crazy about the Chinese view on the world and philosophy," he said.
Dai has finished translating Tao Te Ching and it will come out soon. Then he is going to translate the Four Books and Five Classics in the future. It's his dream.
