It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children counting on me. I worked in a sawmill (锯木厂).
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped (缠绕) band aids around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and stacking lumber (堆木材) for eight hours a day had caused my fingers to split (裂开) and bleed at their tops in the cold, dry winter air.
That day at work was harder than normal. We were short-handed on workers. The machines kept breaking down. We had to rush to catch up as the lumber stacked up. On top of that, all the heaters in the building had stopped working and we could see our breath as we spent hours working there.
When the work day finally ended, I walked wearily toward the washroom, took off my work gloves, and checked my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I felt so tired. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
After driving home, I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened the front door but instead, one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelled “Daddy!” and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart filled with love. My tired body didn’t feel so tired anymore. My aches and pains disappeared into her hug. And the joy in my heart chased the sadness away. At that moment I kissed my little girl’s cheek and held her tight. I knew I could continue and that things would get better.

“Can we order out tonight ” Sam asked her dad.

“Not tonight,” Dad said, “and besides, we have plenty of food, we just need to be creative.”
As Dad searched through the cupboard, a smile spread across Mom’s face: “Let’s have a cooking competition—we can decide who in our family has the best cooking skills! And the winner will not have to help do dishes tonight!”
Soon many ingredients crowded the counter-top( 台面) —rice, apple, vinegar, cinnamon, eggs, red bell peppers, an eggplant, and several other foods. Mom and Dad were positive that a healthy meal could be created using these ingredients, but Sam and Gabe were dubious—they doubted these food items could produce a quality meal.

Over 50 years ago, there was a really interesting experiment (实验) with kids, aged between three and six years old. Scientists were curious (好奇的) about something called “self-control.” That’s like when you really want to do something, but you decide to wait.
In the experiment, each kid sat at a table and a scientist put a delicious marshmallow (棉花糖) in front of them. The kids had a choice to make. They could eat the marshmallow right then, or if they waited for 15 minutes without eating it, they would get a second marshmallow when the scientist came back. It was a difficult choice!
Some kids decided to eat the marshmallow right away because it looked so tasty. But others waited, thinking about getting two marshmallows instead of just one. They tried different things to distract themselves, like singing songs or playing games in their minds.
Many years later, the scientists checked on these kids, who were all grown up by then. They noticed something really interesting. The kids who waited for the second marshmallow were more likely to have done well in school and in their jobs. This little test seemed to show that being patient and controlling yourself can help you succeed in different parts of life.
