DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It’s something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason why we look like our parents. We get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It’s because of small things called “genes (基因)” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the “word” in the DNA map, but we don’t understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “words” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we’ll use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.

In a US study that studied the health information of 50,000 people over seven years, researchers found that those who made breakfast the largest meal of the day were more likely to have a lower body mass index (BMI,体重指数) than those who ate a large lunch or dinner.
However, studies have shown that giving up dinner increases the risk of physical illness, according to Courtney Peterson, the study’s author at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
“For those who eat dinner later, their risk of obesity (肥胖) and diabetes (糖尿病) goes through the roof. While it seems breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it might actually be dinner,” she says. “Our blood sugar control is best early in the day. When we eat dinner late, that’s when we’re weak because our blood sugar is the worst.”
Researchers designed a study in which 52 women took part in a 12-week weight loss programme. All had the same number of calories (卡路里) over the day, but half had breakfast, while the other half did not. What they found was that it wasn’t breakfast itself that caused the people who joined this study to lose weight: it was changing their normal routine.
When you have been eating less and less, and the blood sugar in your body drops, your body will produce something named “cortisol (皮质醇)” that specifically has a great influence on blood sugar. But it can also create stress in the body, making you feel sad and nervous.

Rob Frenette had problems with bullies (欺辱) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and scared. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas to stop bullying.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie Neu, he made a website called www.bullyingcanada.ca. Every weekend Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying.
Rob’s most important message is: “When bullies are unkind to you, it isn’t your fault. There’s nothing wrong with you, so you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people.”
One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won’t stop until there’s a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

Photos of great red aurora borealis (极光) in parts of North China have got plenty of online attention recently. These photos were taken from May 10th to May 13th, 2024. Some lucky people enjoyed the amazing aurora during that time.
Aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is a natural light show in the sky, most commonly seen in the high-latitude regions (高纬度地区). It is caused by the interaction between charged particles (带电粒子) from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场). The most common colors seen in the aurora are green, red, and blue.
Auroras often seem to be very close to the ground, but the lowest aurora is still about 100 kilometers above the ground, a distance much higher than clouds are formed or airplanes can fly. An aurora band can be thousands of kilometers long, a few hundred kilometers high, but only a few humdred meters thick. As far as scientists can tell, auroras do not make any sounds that people on Earth can hear. Even so, if you live in a place where auroras can be seen, you might notice problems with your television, radio, or cell phone at times. The energy created by solar wind in the Earth’s atmosphere can get in the way of sound waves and pictures that travel through the air to your TV or radio.
Aurora borealis is truly amazing, especially the first time you see it. I hope you are able to travel to far north places to see it at least once during your lifetime. I know you will never forget it!

C.Aurora borealis can be seen in all places at night.
D.Aurora borealis can make some sound that can be heard on the earth.
5.What does the writer mainly tell us in the last paragraph
A.We’d better save our own lifetime.

An environmental group called the Food Commission is unhappy and disappointed because of the sales of bottled water from Japan. The water is angrily argues in public, has traveled 10,000 "food miles "before it reaches Western customers." transporting water halfway across the world is surely the extremely stupid use of fuel when there is plenty of water in the OK." It is also worried that we are wasting our fuel by buying prawns from Indonesia (7,000 food miles) and carrots from South Africa (5,900 food miles).
Counting the number of miles traveled done by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage done by an industry. Most food is transported around the world on container ships that are extremely energy efficient(节能). It should be noted that a ton of butter transported 25 miles in a truck product transported hundreds of miles by sea. Besides, the idea of "food miles" ignores(无视)the amount of fuel used in the production. It is possible to cut down your food miles by buying tomatoes grown in Britain rather than those grown in Ghana; the difference is that the British one will have been raised in heated greenhouses and the Ghanaian ones in the open sun.
What the idea of "food miles" provide, however, is the chance to cut out Third World Countries from First World food markers. The number of miles traveled by our food should, as I see it, be regarded as a sign of the success of the global trade system, not a sign of damage to the environment.
1.The Food Commission is angry because it thinks that ________.
A.UK wastes a lot of money importing food products
B.some imported goods cause environmental damage
C.growing certain vegetables causes environmental damage
D.people waste energy buying food from other countries
2.The phrase "food miles" in the passage refers to the distance _________.
A.that a food product travels to a market
B.that a food product travels from one market to another
C.between UK and other food producing countries
D.between a Third World country and a First World food market
3.By comparing tomatoes raised in Britain and in Ghana, the another tries to explain that _________.
A.British tomatoes are healthier than Ghanaian ones
B.Ghanaian tomatoes taste better than British ones
C.cutting down food miles may not necessarily save fuel
D.protecting the environment may cost a lot of money
4.Which of the following examples can NOT support the Food Commission’s idea
A.Water. B.Prawns. C.Carrots. D.Tomatoes.
5.From the passage we know that the author is most probably _________.
A.a supporter of free global trade B.a member of an energy development group
C.a member of the Food Commission D.a supporter of First World food markets

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house How will you escape Do you know how to save yourself Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.

A.Aurora borealis isn’t far away from the earth.
B.Aurora borealis sometimes brings trouble to people.
C.Aurora borealis can be seen in all places at night.
D.Aurora borealis can make some sound that can be heard on the earth.
5.What does the writer mainly tell us in the last paragraph

From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury (伤害).
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平常的) person, hanging by the finger-tips (手指尖) will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (泄露) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof (屋顶). From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥) might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.
