①The seahorse is a small fish with a curly tail. Its size is from as small as a peanut (花生) to as large as a tennis shoe. Seahorses come in many colors, and some even have the ability to change colors to match the environment where they make their homes.
②________ They are the slowest swimmers among fish. Their only way to push themselves forward is by using a tiny fin on their back. Seahorses often hold onto plants with their tails for a faster trip!
③The seahorses’ biggest danger comes from humans. Seahorses feed on tiny fish and plankton (浮游生物), but chemical (化学品) pollution from human activities harms their food. And human-caused climate change has led to warmer ocean temperatures, which put stress on seahorses’ bodies by influencing their breathing and appetite (食欲). What’s more, because seahorses are poor swimmers, they have trouble running away to a safe area when their usual living place is polluted.
④However, these bad things are far less terrible than the seahorse trade. Over 20 million seahorses are caught and killed each year for use in traditional Chinese medicine. On top of this, hundreds of thousands of wild seahorses are sold to private aquarium (水族馆) owners every year.
⑤As it continues, seahorses could disappear by around 2050. But there is still time to save them. Protecting seahorses means never buying them for home aquariums or taking medicine made with them. The whole world needs to protect oceans by cutting down on sea pollution.

By studying the connection between the sense of humor and death, some researchers found that women with a strong sense of humor lived longer, although they had some illnesses such as heart problems and infection (感染) and that happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study among 53,556 women and men in their country. The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48% lower risk of death from all causes. We know AI isn’t a real person. But a lot of us act as if it is. In a survey of 2,000 people in the US, 48 percent thought we should be polite when talking to AI.
Scientists from the Imperial College London in the UK found something similar recently. They saw that people often treat AI agents like social beings. They show sympathy and even protect them.
In an experiment, 244 volunteers played an online ball game with an AI bot. A pretend volunteer was also there and sometimes didn’t give the ball to the AI on purpose. When the scientists watched the game, they found that most of the time, the volunteers tried to make it fair for the bot by giving it the ball more.
This finding matches the basic ideas of media equation theory. This theory was made by scientists at Stanford University in the US in the 1990s. It says we often respond to media and technology like we do to real people and places, not just as tools. While this can make humans and AI work well together, it also has risks. Especially when AI bots are made to act like “friends” to people.
For example, there’s Replika. It’s an AI companion chatbot that started in 2017 and has about 2 million users around the world. Its website says, “Your Replika will always be on your side no matter what.” But the AI’s support became dangerous when it made Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, want to kill the Queen of England. He tried in December 2021 but was stopped in time. Still, he got a nine-year sentence.
Scientists at Imperial College London said companies should not make AI too much like a real person in their design. This can help people know the difference between virtual and real.
1.Why did the volunteers help the AI bot during the online ball game
A.They were required to treat all players equally.
B.They felt pressured to follow the rules of the game.
C.They found it more interesting to involve the AI bot more.
D.They sympathized with the AI bot and treated the AI bot like a social being.
2.According to the media equation theory, how do we treat media and technology
A.Like tools. B.Like we do with real people and places.
C.By completely ignoring them. D.Only considering them when using them.
3.What is a potential risk of AI bots acting as “friends” for human users
A.They may waste users’ time.
B.They may encourage harmful behavior.
C.They may isolate users from reality.
D.They may misuse users’ personal data.
4.How do researchers at Imperial College London advise on the design of AI agents
A.Controlling their level of humanness.
B.Improving their interaction performance.
C.Programming them to ignore negative behavior.
D.Equipping them with advanced learning theories.
5.What is the main idea of the article
A.Describing the development history of AI technology.
B.Emphasizing the role of AI in improving work efficiency.
C.Analyzing the application of AI in the field of education.
D.Discussing how people treat AI as social beings and exploring its risks.
C
Bad moods (情绪) can be difficult for you and the people around you to deal with. However, people can’t be happy all the time, and it is normal to have bad moods. The best way to improve moods changes from person to person, but trying the following methods can help you find what works for you!
Do something you enjoy. This may sound unclear, but that’s partly because different people have different interests. The key point is that doing something you enjoy will improve your mood by cutting your stress. You know your own interests better than anyone else, so think about what makes you feel happy and allow yourself to do that thing.
Make yourself laugh. Laughing can actually change the chemistry in your body. Things that can make you laugh may include: talking to a funny friend, watching a humorous video or a funny TV show, reading funny articles and so on.
Exercise. There is a strong relation between exercise and moods. Most people experience an improved mood within 5 minutes of exercise. There are many different kinds of exercise, and anything that elevates your heart rate (心率) may improve your mood. You can choose running, swimming or dancing.
Eat a healthy meal or snack. When you are hungry, it is easy for you to get angry. So food has something to do with moods. Eating a healthy meal can make you feel healthier and happier. Fruit and vegetables are good choices. Getting healthy fats can also make you feel full longer. However, avoid fat-free foods. They often don’t have enough nutrition (营养) and may leave you feeling unhappy.

When you practice reading, you are not only repeating the words on the page, but also improving your reading abilities, learning and using background knowledge and learning new vocabulary, etc. While reading, you will learn around one new word for every 1,000 words you read.
We did a survey about reading times among 300 students. The diagram (图表) shows the result of the survey.
According to the survey, there is a huge difference between the number of vocabulary words learned by students who read for less than 15 minutes daily and 30+minutes every day. Unfortunately, the study also shows that the kids who read for half an hour or more daily take up less than 20% of students—about 50% of students read less than 15 minutes.

If you’ve ever thought that dogs seem to know when people are stressed (有压力的), you were right. Scientists did a study which showed that dogs can tell the difference between the smell of a person when they’re relaxed and when they’re stressed.
All day long, our bodies go through changes and produce different chemicals (化学物质). These chemicals come out in our breath and sweat (汗液), changing the way we smell. But it wasn’t known if stress could cause changes that could be discovered.
So the researchers collected breath and sweat samples (样本) from 36 different people. They got samples when the people were relaxed, and also when they were stressed. To stress people out, the scientists asked a really difficult math problem, and forced people to do it in their heads quickly. And they weren’t nice about it. They kept telling them to hurry up. That lasted three minutes. Then the researchers collected two more sweat and breath samples.
The scientists used one of the stressed samples, along with two clean pieces of cloth, to train the dogs to find the stressed smell. Then came the challenge (挑战) —the dogs had three choices: a sample from a relaxed person, a stressed sample from that same person, and a clean piece of cloth. In all, the dogs did 720 tests. They correctly identified the stressed sample about 94% of the time.
The results make it clear that stress does have a smell that dogs can find. Scientists say the news could be especially useful in training service dogs, since their job is to help people who have stress.
