Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study. To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的). When you put away a book - or memory - you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again. How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences using it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
( ) 61. In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because __________.
A. they are too worried
C. they have memory problems

( ) 63. The long-term memory __________.
A. lasts for only a few seconds
B. is like a very big lake with lots of fishes
C. is like a very big library with many, many books
D. is bad for students’ study
( ) 64. According to the passage, you can memorize vocabularies by __________.
A. reading as often as possible
B. writing e-mails to the people you know
C. taking many photos about them
D. making pictures in your mind with the words
( ) 65. This passage mainly tells us about __________.

What do you see when you look at abstract(抽象) art?Does it make sense to you? Does it look like anything? Is it supposed to?
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly(确切地) like they looked. They didn’t want their art to be realistic. They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours(his “blue period”). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his “rose period”). Many of his other paintings are called “cubist(立体画派)” because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso’s paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so original; many of his fellow artists didn’t understand it.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings.
Other artists like the surrealists(超现实主义者), were interested in subconscious(潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbol in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that look like dreams.
There are still many abstract artists around the world. That's the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.

Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.
Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless at science and finished bottom of his class. Now, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell(干细胞) researcher Shinya Yamanaka.
Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance(坚持不懈) can lead.
At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. Gurdon’s high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was “quite ridiculous”.
In spite of his teacher’s criticisms, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab early and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.
“My own belief is that we will, in the end , understand everything about how cells actually work.” Gurdon said.
In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic(基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone(克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create Dolly the sheep in 1996, the first cloned mammal(哺乳动物) in the world.
In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample (样本) of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells. Using the technique, doctors can repair a patient’s heart after a heart attack.
“Luck favors the prepared mind,” Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don’t work, but when they do, you have to seize(抓住) the chance.”

First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade Seven, we had a new subject – English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, the songs sound nice. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well. And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine. Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence(智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states(州) have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ(智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure(气压) may make people forgetful(健忘). People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s problem.
60.What can cause problems on health?
A. Hot and wet weather B. A strong wind C. Warm weather D. Low air pressure
61.A report shows that people may have more intelligence when ______ comes.
A. rain B. a strong wind C. very hot weather D. low air pressure

I remember reading a story once about a man who found a bag with a lot of clay (泥土) balls by the seashore. They didn’t look like much, but they intrigued (激起……的兴趣) the man so he took the bag with him.
As he walked along the beach, to pass the time, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could throw.
He thought little about it until he dropped one of the balls and it broke open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone (宝石) . Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels (珠宝) in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him.
He had been on the beach for a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have had tens of thousand, but he just threw it all away.
You know sometimes, it’s like that with people, we look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external (外部的) clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beautiful, so we discount(不重视,不理会) it, we see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or well-known or wealthy.
There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees him, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant(灿烂的) jewel begins to shine forth.
64. Why did the man throw the clay balls into the ocean?
A. Because he wanted to exercise.
B. Because he wanted to kill time.
C. Because the balls were too heavy.
D. Because he wanted to show he was rich.
65. It is clear that _______.
A. the man was a fool B. the man would know people better
C. the man got tens of thousands of dollars D. the man have got more money
66. The underline sentence means that _______.
A. we will see the sunshine B. we will see a beautiful jewel
C. we will find the inner(内在的) beauty D. we will find the external(外部的) beauty
67. From this passage we can learn _______.
A. we should break everything we find to look for jewels
B. everything is more beautiful inside than outside
C. everything ugly in appearance (外貌) must be beautiful inside
D. we can’t judge (判断) things or people only by their appearance

If you are reading this article in class, you are probably trying to read it quickly. You have been taught to skim and scan, to look for key words so as to understand the main idea and the important points in the article. Skimming and scanning is a good way when you are taking an exam. But, today, many people skim and scan everything and they have lost the ability to enjoy reading.
Now something called the “slow reading movement” has become popular. The idea is that people should shut off their computers and mobile phones for half an hour or forty-five minutes each day and enjoy the pleasures of reading a good book—slowly! In many cities there are even slow reading clubs where members go to a café, sit quietly, drink coffee and just read.
Researchers have found that reading slowly, helps people concentrate and relax. Reading, of course, isn't easy. You have to sit still, for one thing. And it can seem boring when compared to the excitement of playing video games. But, for me, reading has been an enduring pleasure in my life. From the age of ten, when I got my first library card, I’ve enjoyed thousands of interesting people I would have never met in real life. Reading helped me to understand the world around me. It was an education in a classroom that had no walls.
In your classroom, you have learned to read “fast”. Outside the classroom, you should try to learn to read “slow”. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story went, one book was saved. It was not a valuable book, and so a poor man who could read very little bought it for a few coins. Between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the touchstone!
The touchstone was a small pebble(卵石) that could turn any common metal into gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while common pebbles were cold.
So the man camped on the beach and began testing pebbles.
He thought that if he picked up common pebbles and put them down again, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea.
He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone.
The days became weeks and the weeks into months. One day, however, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means a lot of things. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.
(1) Eat a variety of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (营养) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
(2) Drink water and milk most often.
Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙) to grow strong bones, and milk is rich in it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories, not important nutrition.
(3) Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels.
When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat. Putting on too much weight does not mean health.
(4) Limit screen time.
What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies and playing computer games. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

The right name is important in the business world. All you have to do is think of the names for some of the product are connected in everyone’s mind.
In many countries, successful trade or brand names are protected by law. This is so that other companies cannot make a product that looks like another. People might think that they were buying one product and, in fact , be buying something different. Businesses register a company or a product name with the government. In fact, more than 1,000 product and company names are registered every hour. Many companies spend a lot of money to find the right name for their products. A good example of this is in the car industry. Some successful names for cars have powerful associations(联系). The Ford Mustang and the Jaguar are only two examples of choosing the names of animals that are fast and strong.
When a U.S. company decides to sell its product in another country, it has to make sure that the product name translates properly. When Coca-Cola introduced its soft drink to China, it looked for the right name. It wanted a name that would do two things. One was to present its image in Chinese and the second was to be close to its first brand name——Coke. It took some efforts before finding the right word—which sounds similar and translates as “happiness in the mouth”. Asian company names are not new to the United States. The brand names of Samsung and Sony have been successful. Finding the right brand name is a big business. Asian companies that sell to foreign markets pay to find a name that will connect with its customers. There are even naming companies that specialize in inventing product names. These companies can charge(要价)up to $ 100,000 a word for their creations. But it’s worth it. Successful companies know how important the right brand names are for their development.
29. Trade names are protected by law in many countries ___________.
A. to make companies pay for naming service.
B. to help people choose the best products.
C. to present good images of the products.
D. to prevent products from being copied.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many companies care about the cost of finding the right names.
B. Creative trade names can help companies to have a larger sale.
C. The government often does business with naming companies.
D. It is considered necessary for cars to be named after animals.
31.What’t the best title for the passage?
A. The Business of Names
B. The Development of Names

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖). He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read.
