Alex set his lunch tray on the table near his friend Leo. “Trade you some fries for some pretzels,” Alex said.
“Deal,” said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox.
Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.
Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.”
Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”
“Yes,” Leo said.
Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
“Give it back to Leo,” said Alex.
“Well, who wants a note anyway ” Daniel said.
“I do,” said Leo.
Alex liked getting notes too.
Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor.
Alex picked it up. He handed it back to Leo, who put it into his pocket.
On the bus that afternoon, Alex thought about what had happened.
Alex’s older brother, Mateo, arrived home just after Alex did. “How was your day, little dude ” Mateo asked.
“A boy in my class was mean to Leo,” Alex said. He explained the way Daniel had acted.
Mateo shook his head. “How would Daniel like it if people picked on him for getting a note ”
“Daniel never gets notes,” Alex said. Suddenly, he had an idea. “That’s it! I know how to help Leo and Daniel.”
Alex explained his idea to Mateo. Mateo agreed to help, and they worked on the plan all afternoon.
At lunchtime the next day, Alex hurried to the cafeteria. He set out 23 folded pieces of paper on a table by the entrance. Each piece of paper had the name of a classmate on it.
“What are these ” asked Mira.
“We all have notes,” said Sabrina.
Alex watched as Daniel picked up the note with his name on it. Alex knew that the note said Daniel, ▲ Have a great day.
Alex saw Daniel smile as he put the note into his pocket.
“Great idea, Alex,” said Leo.
“Now everyone knows how it feels to get a lunch note,” Alex said.

(2024·江苏扬州·中考真题)One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. “What’s the matter ” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
John took me to the stable. Oh! What a good supper he gave me that night! What a nice bed of straw! I was glad of it, for I was tired.

(2024·江苏苏州·中考真题)Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.
Home

“No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay ”

“There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”

(2024·江苏常州·三模)When Nat went into school on Monday morning, his heart started to beat quickly, for he thought he would have to display his ignorance (无知) before all his classmates—they were all boys. But Mr Bhaer gave him a seat in the deep window, where he could turn his back on the others. Franz heard him recite (背诵) his lessons there, so no one could hear his mistakes or see how he left marks on his copybook. Nat was truly grateful for this, and he studied very hard.
“Don’t work so hard, my boy; you will tire yourself out,” said Mr Bhaer, smiling, when he saw Nat’s hot face and inky (沾有墨水的) fingers.
“But I must work hard, or I can’t catch up with the others. They know a lot, but I don’t know anything.” said Nat, who seemed to lose heart when he heard the other boys recite their grammar, History, and Geography with amazing accuracy (准确性).
“You know a good many things which they don’t,” said Mr Bhaer, sitting down beside him, when Franz led a class of small students through the multiplication table (乘法表)﹒
“Do I ” Nat asked in surprise.
“Yes, for one thing, you can keep your temper (脾气), while Jack, who is quick at numbers, cannot. That is an excellent lesson, and I think you have learned it well. Then, you can play the violin, and none of the boys can, though they want to do it very much. But, best of all, Nat, you really care to learn something, and that is half the success. It seems hard at first, and you will feel discouraged (气馁的). But if you don’t give up, things will get easier and easier as you go on.”
Nat’s face brightened more and more as he listened. “Yes, I can keep my temper—father’s beating taught me that; and I can play the violin, though I don’t know much about Geography,” he thought, with a sense of comfort. Then he said seriously, “I do want to learn, and I will try. I never went to school, but I couldn’t help it. And if the other boys don’t laugh at me, I guess I’ll make fast progress. You and the lady are so good to me.”

(2024·江苏扬州·三模)Treasure Island isn’t a true story, but the characters do seem to loan out of the pages alive, armed to the teeth and ready to go treasure hunting. But you will find, as you read this book, that although pirates can be murderous and treacherous (奸诈的), they can also be cowardly, superstitious, and easily led. As it turns out, that is fortunate for Jim Hawkins.
It’s a brilliant story. Billy Bones, a retired seaman, comes to live at the Admiral Benbow inn. Jim is just a boy, but he can see that Billy Bones is a nervous man, always on the look-out for strangers arriving at the inn. And well he might be nervous, because he carries with him in his battered old sea-chest a map drawn by Captain Flint himself giving the whereabouts of all Flints buried treasure! Captain Flint!-the most feared pirate ever to travel the high seas.
Well, Flint is dead, but there are plenty of men who served with Captain Flint still a live who will feel they have a fair claim to the treasure. The map, though, ends up in the possession of Jim Hawkins—(it’s a near thing, read the book to see how that happens). Jim tells the secret in the local doctor, who quickly joins forces to acquire a ship and crew to sail for Treasure Island.
There’s a famous scene where Jim, hiding in the apple barrel on deck, discovers that mutiny (叛乱) is planned. It’s a bad moment. The numbers suggest that the pirates are going to have it all their own way. There are nineteen mutineers and seven honest men, including Jim. And now, you will have to read the book for yourself. This is a fantastic tale of cheat, bravery and cowardice. I don’t know how things would have turned out if it hadn’t been for Jim Hawkins. For it is Jim who single-handedly steals the Hispaniola from under the very noses of the pirates and sails her round the island to a secret beaching place.
And do you know what happens to Long John Silver, the greatest double-crosser of them all No Well, don’t expect me to tell you. Don’t be nervous of reading a ‘classic’. I know it was published a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean it is difficult to read. There is one piece of advice I will give, though. I don’t think this book is ever out of print—there are hundreds of different copies around. If you can, choose a copy with large enough print to be able to read comfortably, and exciting illustrations. It makes all the difference.
Go ahead! Read the book. I think you’ll love it.

When I first heard that I was going to Africa, I was a little worried. But I quickly realized people there were really friendly.

The cabins were broken and dirty. Finally, I found some food, a bottle of wine and some water and went back onto the deck.

He looked at me unhappily, but he could do nothing. But Israel Hands slyly watched me with strange eyes. “I imagine,” said Hands, “you want to get to the bank. But now you need my help. So give me some food and drinks, and something to tie up my wound. Then I’ll tell you how to sail the ship. That’s fair, isn’t it ”
“I want to get to North Inlets.” I said. Israel Hands agreed to give me help, and in three minutes, the Hispaniola was sailing easily along the coast of Treasure Island. I then found a scarf to help Hands tie up the knife wound in his leg. After eating and drinking, he sat up and looked better.
Israel Hands was very good at guiding me. Then we turned into the harbour.
I was concentrating (思想集中) hard on bringing in the ship in safely and forgot to pay attention to Israel Hands. When I turned around, surprised to see Hands was standing behind me, his knife in hand ready. I jumped away and ran down the deck. It surprised me how quickly he could move with his wounded leg. (2024·江苏苏州·二模)I was hurrying to our basketball game one morning when Hillary Barness, the most popular girl in school, stopped me. “Are you the twin who won the art competition ” she asked.
“No, that’s Christine. I’m Katie,” I said.
We were not the same. In fact, we were quite dissimilar. She could beat Snow White in a beauty competition! Compared to Christine, I felt like one of Cinderella’s ugly sisters.
One Saturday, Christine gave me a painting lesson because I was always trying to be artistic too. But I knocked over the vase of flowers. However, she turned the whole mess into an amazing work. You could look at it in five different ways and see five different things. With this excellent creation, she won the art competition. I really envied her, but I knew it wasn’t her fault. I was the one with wild, unmanageable hair and no talent.
Joining Christine’s basketball team was my latest effort to be like her.
On the way to the gym, I made up my mind to give my best performance in that day’s game. As soon as we arrived at the gym, I couldn’t wait to warm up. “Christine, here!” I threw her a ball. It was too high and she missed it. The ball fell onto and broke the recorder which was used to play the national anthem before each game.
I apologized as I picked up the broken pieces of the recorder. Coach looked at the mess and asked, “How are we going to play the song now ”
Christine suggested, “Let Katie sing it! She’s always singing at home and she’s got a nice voice.”
Coach asked, “Would you ” I found myself nodding.
Coach announced the national anthem and everyone stood up. Standing before a microphone, I looked up to the flag. The notes seemed to flow from deep inside me, and my voice was clear. When I finished, the gym was silent. Then it was filled with cheer. As the game started, my teammates gave me the thumbs-up.
The next morning, Hillary Barnes stopped me in the hallway and asked, “Are you the twin who sang the national anthem ”
“Yes, that’s me.” With a smile on my face, I walked to the classroom. I would never think that I was not as perfect as Christine.

Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa’s party, but he didn’t want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had Sam knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye. (2024·江苏连云港·二模)My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and my father wanted me to be a lawyer.
However, I wanted to be a sailor and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave his house, where I would I have an easy and comfortable life.
“Two kinds of people go to sea,” he said, “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish, having no other way to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich. You are in the middle, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. Your elder brother didn’t listen to me, and now he is dead. If you do not listen to me, you will have a difficult life.”
