广东省佛山市2024-2025学年高二上学期1月期末英语试题
一、阅读理解(本大题共3小题)
In 1980, when Malcolm Campbell was a senior in high school, he took a history class with a teacher named Don Lawson. One of the units that Mr. Lawson taught was about the 1960s, and movements against the Vietnam War.
For two days, Mr. Lawson played them songs by Bob Dylan to show that art can be an important vehicle for protest. On the second day, Campbell raised his hand, with a question.
“Is this gonna be on the test ” he recalled asking. “And Mr. Lawson looked at me and said, ‘No, man, this is for you,’” Campbell said.
That’s when Campbell suddenly understood what Mr. Lawson was trying to do.
“It was like in the movies,” Campbell remembered. “A light went off in my head, and I realized, ‘Wow, he’s planned this material not for the content, but for personal enrichment — for my own epiphany.’”
Campbell went on to earn a doctor’s degree in biology. From there, he spent 30 years teaching biology at Davidson College. All along, he kept the lessons of Mr. Lawson in the back of his mind.
“I tried to convey the idea to my students that they should be as eager as possible in school, and learn as much as possible,” Campbell said.
“Don’t worry about pleasing me. Do it for yourself,” Campbell told his students.
Campbell recently retired from teaching. Looking back at his long academic career, one of his proudest achievements was helping students have their own moments of enlightenment (启迪).
“That’s an amazing career — basically I go around throwing lit matches onto masses of leaves and watching them take fire,” Campbell said. “And that’s pretty cool. Because once they really understand what learning is, all you gotta do is add that match, and poof... they’re going to learn the rest of their lives,” Campbell said. “And that’s what Mr. Lawson did for me.”
1.Why did Mr. Lawson play Dylan’s songs in class
A.To highlight the role of songs. B.To provide the contents of exams.

A.Interest. B.Realization. C.Passion. D.Reflection.
3.What should a teacher do according to the last paragraph
A.Learn from experienced teachers. B.Arouse students’ passion for learning.
C.Devote their whole life to the career. D.Provide professional help for students.
Every spring, about two billion birds fly through Texas. However, light pollution in urban areas can be deadly for many migratory (迁徙的) species.
The experts from the Texas Conservation Alliance, who ran the Lights Out program in 2020, convinced downtown businesses and residents to switch off unnecessary lighting from 11 p. m. to 6 a. m. during spring and autumn, reducing light pollution that is otherwise misleading to birds.
As of October 31 of 2024, the team recorded 42 bird deaths, down from the 110 deaths documented in the fall of 2023. This is partly due to the support of downtown building owners who have agreed to turn off lights overnight after joining the Lights Out program in 2021.
In addition to making the very simple switch, Lights Out teaches city officials and other involved parties how to decrease light pollution and save urban wildlife. The Alliance has also developed a way to forecast bird migration during specific times and in specific locations, helping residents and businesses predict when birds may pass so they can activate the Lights Out program more accurately.
And it’s not just a win for the birds, but for everyone who shares an ecosystem with them. Birds are good signs of ecosystem health. Plus, birds look and sound really cool and have interesting behaviors.
Bird lovers can do their part, too. The Lights Out program, for instance, has started using dBird, a website where residents can report cases of dead and injured birds, which helps experts target their efforts.
“We’re only one team. We can’t collect all the data on the building strikes. We know there is more happening,” director Mei Ling Liu told a reporter. “So spreading the word that anyone can report a bird strike and help us collect this data is what we’ re trying to do with this website.”
4.What does paragraph 3 tell us about the Lights Out program
A.It raised awareness of conservation. B.It aimed to reduce electricity waste.
C.It helped decrease the deaths of birds. D.It became popular among the country.
5.What is the purpose of paragraph 5
A.To explore ways of conservation. B.To recognize the importance of birds.

C.Rescue the Dying Birds D.Turn Off Lights for Future
When it comes to telling whether someone is lying, we currently have very few options, but a team of Israeli researchers claims to have come up with something better than anything we’ve seen before.
Using stickers containing electrodes (电极) that track the activity of muscles, the researchers. led by Professor Dino Levy, discovered that some people unintentionally activate muscles in their cheeks and eyebrows when they lie. No sensors had been able to measure these minor muscle movements before, but the innovative ones invented by Dino Levy proved sensitive enough.
Based on the assumption that facial muscles contort (扭曲) when we lie, Levy’s team attached the novel stickers to a number of test subjects’ checks and eyebrows, and made them sit face-to-face while the team spoke a series of words, some true and some false. One of the subjects wore headphones and had to repeat the words being told, which meant sometimes they had to lie while repeating false words. The person sitting on the other side had to figure out when they were being lied to. At some point, they changed roles.
As expected, study subjects had a very tough time detecting (发现) their partners’ lies. The electrical signals delivered by the electrodes attached to their faces, on the other hand, managed to catch lies at a rate of 73%, better than any other existing technology.
“In our study, we had the advantage of knowing what the subjects heard through the headsets, and therefore also knowing when they were lying,” Levy said. “Thus, using advanced machine learning techniques, we trained our program to detect lies based on signals from the electrodes.”
Once the lie detection rate improves enough, this technology could be used in many areas, such as airport security, online job interviews, and even police investigations. It would help detect lies more correctly and quickly, making it a useful tool for fields that rely on trust and truthfulness.
8.What is the Israeli researchers’ achievement
A.A technique for machine learning. B.A new way of conducting research.
C.A method for detecting human lies. D.A new assumption about human lying.
9.Why did the researchers ask the subjects to detect lies
A.To measure the subjects’ ability. B.To explore the motives behind lies.
C.To test the new type of technology. D.To track the subjects’ muscle activities.
10.What does the last paragraph suggest about the technology
A.It has been used in many fields. B.It will replace humans in future jobs.
C.It requires large amounts of tests. D.It shows great potential for future use.
二、其他(本大题共1小题)
11.将下列语句(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。
A.Nature is connected and controlled by many food chains (链). A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat.
B.With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to grow. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.
C. Although there are strict rules controlling the movement of animals and plants between countries nowadays, some parts of the world are still experiencing problems with invasive (入侵的) species introduced hundreds of years ago.
D.When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present-for example, a species goes extinct -the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapse.
E. Usually, human activity is the main cause of a food chain break. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home to the places they explored. They did not realize that introducing invasive species was actually breaking the natural food chains there.

三、阅读理解(本大题共1小题)
Habits allow us to make actions we perform frequently automatic, for example, cooking familiar foods and driving home from work. Consistently practicing good behavior helps to develop positive and lasting habits. 12 And both building good habits and breaking bad habits can be challenging, so learning some effective strategies is necessary.
13 The reward must be delivered consistently and immediately after the desired behavior. For example, you could reward yourself for cleaning the apartment by playing your favorite video game. Remember to do the pleasurable activity each time you perform the healthy behavior. 14
Have you noticed changes in your shopping behavior after a local shopping center rearranges its layout This is because changing environmental signals affects habitual behavior. 15 These include going to college, starting a new job, getting married, retiring, and so on. It’s important to recognize these opportunities: they are chances to reshape our habits. For example, not living next to a fast-food restaurant can be an opportunity to form healthier eating habits.
To break bad habits, we may consider increasing the difficulty of performing unhealthy behaviors. 16 This is what I told a friend complaining about her little boy’s unhealthy eating habits. I suggested the mother make it more time-consuming for the boy to access fatty and sweet snacks while making fresh fruits easily accessible to the child.
A.This regularity helps strengthen the habit.
B.This will help children realize their bad habits.
C.It often occurs as a result of life course changes.
D.But unhealthy behaviors can also become habitual.
E.It is important for the society to build a reward system.
F.At the same time, we should make it easier to perform the good habit.
G.To turn a healthy behavior into a habit, you can think of an effective reward.

A Long Ride Home
Last weekend, I experienced a frustrating traffic jam on my way home from school.
The bus was moving at a snail’s pace due to the heavy congestion, and it took us more than two hours to cover a distance that would normally take just thirty minutes. The streets were packed with vehicles, and the honking of horns was incessant. I felt exhausted and impatient, realizing how disruptive traffic jams can be to our daily lives.
This experience has taught me the importance of planning ahead and considering alternative routes or transportation methods to avoid such delays in the future.
