The crowd holds its breath. High above them on the climbing wall, hanging upside down by the tips of two fingers, is the French climber Francois Lombard. He is competing in the World Cup Climbing Championships at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.
Until the mid-1960s, climbers practised their skills on cliffs in areas where there was a plentiful supply of good climbing angles. During the winter they would either put up with the cold weather, go walking instead or climb on snow and ice in Scotland.
However, as the sport developed it was increasingly important for top climbers to keep fit. With the cliffs unusable for much of the year, they used brick-edges or stone buildings to work out on. This allowed them to keep their fingers strong, and beat off the boredom of not being able to climb. It wasn’t long before many sports centres started building walls specifically for the task, using bricks with special edges to cling on to. Many of these early walls followed the example set by Don Robinson. Walls could only be built in a vertical plane (垂直面), while cliffs outside have features like overhangs and angled slabs (石板) of rock. There was the added problem that once the walls were up, their patterns were fixed and climbers would eventually tire of their repetitive nature, despite thinking of every combination of holds possible.
In 1985, a Frenchman, Francois Savigny, developed a material which he made into shapes like those that climbers would find on the cliffs. These could be fixed onto any existing wall and then taken off when climbers got bored with a particular combination.

For years, twice a day Aadya Joshi walked past a dump filled with smelly rubbish in her neighborhood of south Mumbai on her way to and from school. Originally it was the garden of the local police station. When she was 15, during her summer holidays, Joshi decided to do something about it. “I walked into the police station and was like, ‘Can I please clean your garden ’” recalls Joshi. “It took three or four weeks to eventually convince them that I was not going to give up halfway and leave them with more work. ”
The plot of land covers an area of 60 square meters, about a quarter of a tennis court. But, over the course of four Sundays in the summer, with help of local residents, Joshi did more than clear it. She replanted it with native Indian plants and trees. Joshi said, “The first day that we cleaned up I made the mistake of not wearing gloves and I was sick for two weeks.”
The idea for native planting came from Joshi’s reading on the Miyawaki method of afforestation (植树造林) and the work of University of Delaware ecologist Douglas Tallamy. These both argue that planting the right trees can have a significant impact on restoring insect and animal biodiversity. The results in Mumbai were immediate: monkeys now hang out at the police station, and butterflies and birds have made the garden their home.
After creating the garden, Joshi developed a database of 2,000 plants unique to the Indian subcontinent (次大陆) and last year was awarded the annual Children’s Climate prize, founded by Swedish energy company Telge Energi. Her advice for others looking to follow in her footsteps:
“If you bite off more than you can chew in the beginning, you will be stuck and lose motivation,” she says. “But something small, like your neighborhood police station, it’s very manageable.”

10.What is the purpose of the text

Do you love food Whether you’re a foodie or someone who just likes eating, there is so much to choose from. We know that too much of the wrong kind of food can be bad for our health, but for some people having a food allergy means that eating certain things can actually be harmful. Such cases may seem uncommon. 11
An allergy is caused by the immune (免疫的) system fighting substances in the environment. 12 It means that people have to follow strict dietary restrictions, otherwise their lives may be put at risk. Allergy specialist Dr. Adam Fox says “if you look back over, say,30 or 40 years…… there are much more serious allergic problems around now than there were.” 13 Last year a teenager died after suffering an allergic reaction from eating a piece of bread containing peanuts. This led to a call for better food-labeling laws.
Research has found that this problem is particularly affecting children. 14 Dr. Alexandra Santos from King’s College London says “food allergy now affects about 7% of children in the UK and 9% of those in Australia, for example. Across Europe, 2% of adults have food allergies.”
So what might be the cause Dr. Santos says, the increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. 15 She adds that possible factors are pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to bacteria, which change how our immune systems respond. She points out that it’s very common for migrants who move to another country to develop food allergies in their new location.
A.It seems to be more environmental.
B.A food allergy can affect you at any age.
C.Yet in fact, food allergies are affecting more and more of us.
D.Food allergies can result in some life-threatening reactions.
E.A lot of work is being done to try and find a cure, but that’s not easy.
F.More and more of them are having allergic reactions to certain food.
G.We often hear about people having allergies to dairy products or to nuts.

“Look at me!” he shouted.
His shocked sisters looked, and before the servant girl could get there, the bread plate shook, slid to the floor and broke into small pieces. At this awful point the little girls lifted up their voices and shouted their loudest.
“Mother, come and look what he’s done!”
“Dicky’s broken a great plate!”

62.【答案】After he heard the reason, a burst of anger went through him. Edward couldn’t believe that Dicky had been so uncontrollable. He had always believed in gentle and understanding parenting. Edward sat down with Dicky and asked him to explain his actions. Dicky, feeling regretful, admitted that he had acted foolishly. He explained that he had done it to get attention, as he often felt left out when his mother was busy with guests or his sisters. Edward realized Dicky’s need for more attention and guidance.
Instead of beating him, Edward decided to talk openly with Dicky. He explained how his actions affected the family. He also promised to spend more quality time with him and make him feel valued. This incident became a turning point in their relationship. Dicky learned the importance of expressing his feelings and needs in a more appropriate way while Edward understood the significance of being a patient and attentive father. They both grew closer through communication, proving that violence was not necessary to teach important life lessons.
