I was walking home when a well-dressed man politely stopped me. “Could you tell me which way to Bloor and...” He struggled to get the next word out with a pained look, but I knew better than to finish his sentence for him. “... Bathurst ” he said after several seconds of trying. When I answered, he told me that he didn’t actually need to know. He was practising stuttering (口吃) openly, he explained, hoping to become more confident doing so around strangers.
“Are you doing that because it’s National Stuttering Awareness Day ” I asked with excitement, eager to connect with other stutterers. When he asked how I knew that, I said I grew up with a stutter. He nodded, asking hopefully: “So your stutter has magically disappeared ” I paused. I understood why he assumed this — I sounded quite articulate. But even as we spoke, my stutter had influenced my speech, and that’s why I’d misnamed International as National to avoid the tricky front sound that I continue to struggle with.
Though the severity of my stutter has decreased with age, it has shaped my identity and affected my life tremendously, the way that I speak, interact and move around in the world. Some define stutter as a disability because it is as constant and out of control as blindness or other disabilities. There’s no pill, no surgery, no way to get rid of it, no “recovering” from it. But there is recovering from the shame and self-hatred that result from it. The treatment for stutter shouldn’t be centered around removing a person’s stutter, but rather on reducing one’s negative thoughts and behaviors surrounding it.
As for me, I’d say that my stutter has not “magically disappeared” because I’ve simply found ways to conceal it. But I have a better therapy now — I will grow alongside it, an identity inseparable from the way that I speak. Thinking about this, I wanted to speak from the bottom of my heart to the man, who looked at me hopefully: “__________”
19.What can we learn about the decent man
A.He had lost his way and asked about the direction.
B.He wanted to be braver when talking to unfamiliar people.
C.He was interrupted by the author who finished his sentence.
D.He was practising giving speeches fluently on open occasions.
20.Which is closest in meaning to “articulate” in paragraph 2
A.Fluent. B.Sensible. C.Different. D.Relaxed.
21.Which of the following can best describe the author
A.Adaptable and optimistic. B.Outgoing and ambitious.
C.Humorous and reflective. D.Educated and responsible.
22.What might the author say in the last paragraph
A.Yes. I have got rid of stutter with a more positive attitude.
B.No. There is no recovering from stutter and I have just hidden it.
C.Yes. As I grow older, I rarely stutter now and people don't know I stuttered.
D.No. I will always live with stutter because it is a part of me which I gladly accept.
Hydrogen fuel-cell (氢燃料电池) vehicles aren’t just sources for science fiction or far-out experiments. Cars fueled by hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already here, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology is actively evolving and benefiting from billions of dollars in research. So, why are hydrogen cars virtually non-existent on U. S. roads today
“The answer is simple: economics,’ Sergey Paltsev, a senior scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative told Popular Science. Politicians and automakers once advocated the fuel cell, which turns the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity to drive an electric motor, as the future of passenger automobiles, but the falling cost of batteries and a large number of electrical fueling infrastructure (基础设施) have propelled battery-electric cars well into the lead.
A big switch to hydrogen cars would require cost-cutting and enormous infrastructure development. The Department of Energy’ s Alternative Fuels Data Center shows 55 public hydrogen fueling station locations in the U. S. today, almost only in California, while more than 68,000 active public electric vehicle charging stations across the country.
“Nothing is going to change next year, or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter pathways for hydrogen vehicles,” said Paltsev. It turns out that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles have advantageous applications in medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviation (航空). Besides, battery electric vehicles can be problematic when you have problems with range, fueling time or heavy loads.
The current impractical application of hydrogen passenger vehicles in places like the U. S.is not a reason to“just give up” on hydrogen fuel-cell tech. “We may need it for many other reasons in the future,” cautioned Paltsev, noting that geopolitical issues could prevent access to raw materials for batteries, thus making hydrogen cars suddenly more economically workable.
23.Why are hydrogen cars not commonly seen on U. S. roads today
A.Lack of public awareness. B.Unavailability of hydrogen fuel.
C.Limited research and development. D.High costs and insufficient infrastructure.
24.What is Sergey Paltsev’s attitude towards hydrogen vehicles in the future
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Indifferent. D.Confused.
25.What can be learned about hydrogen fuel-cell tech from the passage
A.It is already cost-effective for passenger vehicles.
B.It fails to solve the problems with range or fueling time.
C.It is practicable due to potential issues resulting from geopolitics.
D.It has unsatisfactory applications in heavy-duty trucks and aviation.
26.What would be the best title to r this passage
A.Battery-Electric Vehicles: A Glorious Era
B.Hydrogen Vehicles: Struggling Yet Promising
C.Why Are We Not Driving Electric Powered Cars
D.How to Build a Public Hydrogen Fueling Station
Unemployment is a significant problem in many developing countries. Without steady work, individuals struggle to rise out of poverty, and the community as a whole also misses out. Worse, without opportunities for proper employment, young people sometimes turn to crime and violence in order to provide for themselves. Thus, giving people opportunities to work is essential for the community’s well-being.
Education plays a vital role in equipping people for certain jobs, but many young people find that even if they are qualified, the jobs are just not there. This was the situation that Rwandan entrepreneur (企业家) Noel Nizeyimana faced. When he graduated from university with a degree in soil and environmental science, he sent out application after application but received no job offers, so he turned to creating his own business, Greencare Rwanda Ltd., a company that transforms waste into products.
Starting a company is not easy, but luckily for Noel, he received funding that helped him get started from the UN Youth Joint Programme. This program is an attempt to reach the UN’s sustainable development goal of “decent work and economic growth.” It also employs 25 people, which shows that helping people start businesses provides work for more than just the person who receives the funds.
All this raises the question of what more can be done to empower young people to start their own businesses. Providing funds to cover the initial costs is certainly important as the starting costs for businesses can be extremely high. Governments are sometimes hesitant to provide funds to startups because success is not guaranteed. Starting a business is risky, and nobody wants to waste money, but experts warn that governments should not enforce too many requirements. Different regions will need different strategies, so trying to conduct a set of one-size-fits-all requirements can lead to the opposite outcome.
While there are other ways to address unemployment, encouraging young business owners is one of the most effective-especially when those businesses produce goods that genuinely help local communities.
27.What is the beginning paragraph mainly about
A.The importance of higher education. B.The consequences of unemployment.
C.The role of government in creating jobs. D.The influence of providing work opportunities.
28.How is paragraph 2 mainly developed
A.By giving an example. B.By stating an argument.
C.By making a comparison. D.By presenting an explanation.
29.What is the opposite outcome of applying the standardized requirements
A.Risking wasting money. B.Carrying out different approaches.
C.Harming the growth of new businesses. D.Empowering young people and investment.
30.What is the main idea of the passage
A.International funding helps build successful mutual trade.
B.Education shoulders an ultimate responsibility in one’s career.
C.Entrepreneurship eases joblessness and boosts community welfare.
D.Unemployment is the primary cause of crime in developing countries.
Are you a person who tends to think about situations in your life more pessimistically, or are you a glass-half-full kind of person 31 Or are you more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt-maybe they’re rushing to the hospital Do you wait until the last minute to complete tasks, or do you plan ahead Personality is a collection of labels that summarize your responses to questions like these. 32
Can personality change Remember, personality is a person’s characteristic way of thinking, feeling and behaving. People change how they think, feel and behave all the time. As people age, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions and more positive ones, are more conscientious, and are less judgmental of others. 33 Some people change a lot and some people hold pretty steady. Moreover, studies find that people can speed up the process of personality change by making intentional changes to their thinking and behavior.
34 The first component involves changing your thinking patterns — this is the cognitive (认知的) piece. You need to become aware of your thoughts to determine whether they’re keeping you stuck acting in line with a particular personality. The behavioral component involves becoming aware of your current action tendencies and testing out new responses. 35 By contrast, if you try behaving more openly, perhaps sharing with a coworker that you’re struggling with a task, you have the opportunity to see whether that changes the way others act toward you.
A.There is variability here, though.
B.Do you tend to get angry when someone cuts you off in traffic
C.Are you showing the characteristics of a reliable person over time
D.If you are defensive around others, they’ll probably respond negatively to you.
E.The good news is that these cognitive-behavioral techniques are relatively simple.
F.That is contrary to the popular belief that your personality type places you in a box.
G.Depending on your answers, you can be described as optimistic, empathetic or dependable.

Sailor Boy
It was almost six months since Mark and his parents moved here, but he still didn’t make any friends except Isabella, his neighbour. By far, the most embarrassing moment was when Mr Larkin introduced him to the class and explained he had previously lived on a houseboat, J. T. immediately nicknamed him“Sailor Boy”. Mark remembered how he felt every time J. T. and his buddies passed him and said, “Here comes Sailor Boy!”
One night, Mark was sitting in his favourite place — on the roof — looking at the stars, which always provided him with a temporary distraction from his new life on land. As usual, in his hand was a long piece of rope with which he would tie the most delicate all purpose sailor knots
A loud “pssst” broke the silence — it was Isabella. “The environmental club is going camping next week. Since you know more about nature than anyone I know, I signed you up.” She announced delightfully.
“Isabella —,” he had just spoken when Isabella gave him a friendly nudge, “It won’t be so bad.You can make more friends and most importantly, they’ll get to know you and see what a great guy you are.”
Then the day of the camp-out arrived. Mr Larkin asked the kids to put up the tent and get their sleeping bags ready. They were divided into groups of four and Mark was assigned to J. T. and his two buddies, Ethan and Jacob.
“You’ ve got to be kidding me,” Mark mumbled, grabbed his backpack and walked towards them. How he wished he were back on the water, not on land!
“Oh no!” Mark’s thoughts were interrupted by a loud cry from J. T.,— I forgot to pack my sleeping bag! “It's not cold out,” Jacob said. “Just sleep on the ground.” “That doesn’t sound comfortable,” Ethan said. J. T. looked to be near tears.
“Um, I have an idea,” Mark suggested. J. T., Jacob and Ethan turned toward Mark who was pulling a long piece of rope out of his backpack. “Do we have any extra rope ”
After helping Mark gather the rope he needed, the three watched in awe as Mark wove the rope to produce a series of thick knots.

“sb. be absorbed in”,固定短语,意为“全神贯注于”,因此这里应是被动结构,同时结合“Recently”可知,这里用现在完成时被动结构“have/has been done”;且主语“not only the students but also the professor”为“not only A but also B”结构,在主谓一致方面采用就近原则,即与“the professor”第三人称单数保持一致,谓语动词也是单数形式,即“has been absorbed”。
by the time为固定短语,意为“到……
5.【答案】A
故选A。
6.【答案】A
故选A。
9.【答案】A
根据句中的“someone charges you with what you haven’t done but you find it difficult”可知,这种情况难以澄清,要用clarify。故选A。
10.【答案】A

【答案】19.B 20.A 21.A 22.D
根据文章第一段内容“He was practising stuttering openly, he explained, hoping to become more confident doing so around strangers.(他解释说,他正在公开练习口吃,希望在陌生人面前能更自信。)”
根据划线词前文“He nodded, asking hopefully: ‘So your stutter has magically disappeared ’(他点了点头,满怀希望地问道:“这么说,你的口吃神奇地消失了?”)” 故选A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“But I have a better therapy now—I will grow alongside it, an identity inseparable from the way that I speak.(但我现在有了更好的治疗方法——我将与它一起成长,一种与我说话方式密不可分的身份。)”可知,作者已经接受自己口吃这一事实;同时文章第四段内容“But there is recovering from the shame and self-hatred that result from it. The treatment for stutter shouldn’t be centered around removing a person’s stutter, but rather on reducing one’s negative thoughts and behaviors surrounding it(但从由此产生的羞耻和自我憎恨中恢复过来是有可能的。 故选A项。
根据前文内容“As for me, I’d say that my stutter has not ‘magically disappeared’ because I’ve simply found ways to conceal it. But I have a better therapy now—I will grow alongside it, an identity inseparable from the way that I speak.(至于我,我想说我的口吃并没有“神奇地消失”,因为我只是找到了隐藏它的方法。

根据第二段“Politicians and automakers once advocated the fuel cell, which turns the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity to drive an electric motor, as the future of passenger automobiles, but the falling cost of batteries and a large number of electrical fueling infrastructure (基础设施) have propelled battery-electric cars well into the lead.
根据第四段““Nothing is going to change next year, or probably not in the next five years, but there are brighter pathways for hydrogen vehicles,” said Paltsev. 故选A。
根据最后一段“The current impractical application of hydrogen passenger vehicles in places like the U. S.is not a reason to“just give up” on hydrogen fuel-cell tech. “We may need it for many other reasons in the future,” cautioned Paltsev, noting that geopolitical issues could prevent access to raw materials for batteries, thus making hydrogen cars suddenly more economically workable.
根据第一段“Cars fueled by hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already here, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology is actively evolving and benefiting from billions of dollars in research. So, why are hydrogen cars virtually non-existent on U. S. roads today

根据文章第一段“Unemployment is a significant problem in many developing countries. Without steady work, individuals struggle to rise out of poverty, and the community as a whole also misses out. Worse, without opportunities for proper employment, young people sometimes turn to crime and violence in order to provide for themselves.
根据文章第二段“Education plays a vital role in equipping people for certain jobs, but many young people find that even if they are qualified, the jobs are just not there. 故选A。
根据文章第四段“Governments are sometimes hesitant to provide funds to startups because success is not guaranteed. Starting a business is risky, and nobody wants to waste money, but experts warn that governments should not enforce too many requirements. Different regions will need different strategies, so trying to conduct a set of one-size-fits-all requirements can lead to the opposite outcome.
根据文章第一段“Unemployment is a significant problem in many developing countries. Without steady work, individuals struggle to rise out of poverty, and the community as a whole also misses out. Worse, without opportunities for proper employment, young people sometimes turn to crime and violence in order to provide for themselves. 和文章第三段“Starting a company is not easy, but luckily for Noel, he received funding that helped him get started from the UN Youth Joint Programme. This program is an attempt to reach the UN’s sustainable development goal of “decent work and economic growth.” It also employs 25 people, which shows that helping people start businesses provides work for more than just the person who receives the funds. 以及文章最后一段“While there are other ways to address unemployment, encouraging young business owners is one of the most effective-especially when those businesses produce goods that genuinely help local communities.

根据上文“Are you a person who tends to think about situations in your life more pessimistically, or are you a glass-half-full kind of person (你是一个倾向于更悲观地看待生活中的情况的人,还是一个乐观的人?)”以及后文“Or are you more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt-maybe they’re rushing to the hospital Do you wait until the last minute to complete tasks, or do you plan ahead (或者你更有可能给他们怀疑的好处——也许他们正在赶往医院?
32.根据上文“Personality is a collection of labels that summarize your responses to questions like these.(个性是一系列标签的集合,这些标签概括了你对这些问题的回答)”可知,上文提到对问题的回答可以反应你的个性,G项中的your answers与上文中的questions like these呼应。
33.根据上文“Can personality change Remember, personality is a person’s characteristic way of thinking, feeling and behaving. People change how they think, feel and behave all the time. As people age, they tend to experience fewer negative emotions and more positive ones, are more conscientious, and are less judgmental of others.(性格能改变吗? 随着年龄的增长,人们往往会经历更少的负面情绪和更多的积极情绪,更认真,更少评判他人)”以及后文“Some people change a lot and some people hold pretty steady. Moreover, studies find that people can speed up the process of personality change by making intentional changes to their thinking and behavior.(有些人变化很大,有些人却很稳定。
34.根据后文“The first component involves changing your thinking patterns — this is the cognitive (认知的) piece. You need to become aware of your thoughts to determine whether they’re keeping you stuck acting in line with a particular personality. The behavioral component involves becoming aware of your current action tendencies and testing out new responses.(第一部分涉及改变你的思维模式——这是认知部分。
35.根据后文“By contrast, if you try behaving more openly, perhaps sharing with a coworker that you’re struggling with a task, you have the opportunity to see whether that changes the way others act toward you.(相比之下,如果你试着表现得更开放一些,比如和同事分享你正在努力完成一项任务,你就有机会看到这是否会改变别人对你的态度)”可知,后文假设的是表现得开放,推测本句的假设与下文中的假设形成鲜明的对比,故D选项“如果你在别人面前防御,他们可能会对你做出消极的反应”符合语境,故选D。

“What are you doing ” asked J. T., genuinely interested. Mark replied, “I'm making a hammock — like bed for you.” With his skilled hands, he continued to twist and tie the rope. J. T., Ethan and Jacob watched intently, their eyes filled with amazement. Mark explained that these were sailor knots, which he had learned during his time living on the houseboat. He told them how useful these knots could be in various situations, not just on a boat but also on land when one needed to make something quickly and sturdily. As he worked, the boys started to chat with him, asking about his life on the water. They were intrigued by his stories of fishing, watching the sunrise from the deck, and the calmness of being surrounded by water.
As night approached, others found the woven “bed” hanging between two large oak trees. J. T. climbed into it gingerly. He looked at Mark and said, “This is amazing, Sailor Boy. I’m sorry for teasing you.” The others nodded in agreement. Mark smiled and said it was okay. From that day on, Mark was no longer an outcast. The boys included him in their conversations and activities. They started to call him “Sailor Boy” in a friendly way. Mark found that he was starting to enjoy his life on land more. He realized that his unique experiences could be a bridge to make friends. He was grateful for this camping trip and Isabella for signing him up, as it had changed his relationship with his classmates for the better.
