一、阅读理解(本大题共5小题)
Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is located in California, USA.It is surrounded by Sierra National Forest to the southeast and Stanislaus National Forest to the northwest. The National Park Service manages this park, which covers 759, 620 acres in four counties: Tuolumne, Mariposa, Mono, and Madera. In 1984, it was recognized as a World Heritage Site because of its granite cliffs (花岗岩峭壁), waterfalls, clear streams, thick forest, lakes, mountains, and bio-diversity. About 95 percent of the park is wild and untouched, making it one of the largest natural habitats in the Sierra Nevada.Geography
The park’s landscape is mostly made of granite and older rocks. Around 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada mountains rose and tilted, which increased the steepness of stream and river beds, forming deep, narrow canyons. One million years ago, glaciers (冰川) formed in higher areas and moved down, carving the U-shaped Yosemite Valley.History
European American settlers first entered the valley in 1851. Other travelers entered earlier, but James D.Savage is credited with discovering the area that became Yosemite National Park. Native Americans had lived in the area for nearly 4,000 years, although humans may have first visited as long as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Yosemite played an important role in the idea of national parks. Galen Clark and others worked hard to protect Yosemite Valley, leading to President Abraham Lincoln signing the Yosemite Grant in 1864, which preserved the land. In 1890, John Muir led a successful movement, helping to establish Yosemite Valley and its surrounding areas as a National Park. Yosemite draws about four million visitors each year. Most visitors spend the majority of their time in the valley’s seven square miles.

Westside Farmers Market held its annual (每年的) College Night on Tuesday, Sept. 3 to engage students with the summer market. This event allowed college students to explore local farming and small businesses.
Many students were excited to attend. Senior Alex Saunders said, “I wanted to come anyway, but when I saw it was College Night, I knew I had to be there.”
The Westside Farmers Market has run on Tuesdays from June to October for 17 years, featuring many special events, which range from College Night to an apple pumpkin festival.
“Beyond the unique products they sell, the vendors (摊贩) have incredible skills and love to share and teach,” said Westside Market Manager Jessica DiSalvo. The market also presents a cheap opportunity to get fresh food, especially for college students. “It’s cheaper than going to a grocery store for most of it for a lot better quality,” Saunders said.
The market continues until October 8. Even if you miss College Night, there are more events coming up, like Craft Night next Tuesday. “Our first Craft Night on August 6 was really great. A couple of vendors were even University of Rochester students,” DiSalvo said.
For those interested in community service, the Westside Farmers Market offers many volunteer opportunities. “We need support in various roles, which can meet your needs,” DiSalvo explained. You can visit the website and fill out an application or call DiSalvo directly.
DiSalvo felt College Night was a success but mentioned ideas for improvement. “A festive atmosphere with games would be fun,” she said. The market was lively all afternoon. DiSalvo was thankful for everyone who visited. “I’m not sure how they found out, but I’m glad they came. I look forward to seeing them again,” she said.

Despite the hopes of both astronomers and science fiction fans alike, Venus may never have been habitable to life. This is the conclusion of a new study out of the University of Cambridge, which has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Today, Venus is an extremely hot planet, with surface temperatures around 867 °F, a thick atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide (CO2), and a surface pressure 92 times that of Earth. Yet the planet has been long theorized to have been habitable many millions of years ago, with oceans of liquid water.
The researchers, however, found that Venus’s atmosphere is too dry to have supported oceans. The planet’s atmosphere lacks enough water, which would have evaporated (蒸发) as the planet warmed over time.
There are two main theories about Venus’s history: Either the planet has always been as hot as it is today, so water never existed in liquid form, or Venus gradually became hotter due to the greenhouse effect, causing any water to evaporate. The Cambridge team took a different approach by studying Venus’s current atmospheric chemistry. They calculated (计算) the rates at which water and other gases are destroyed in Venus’s atmosphere. Unlike Earth’s volcanoes, which release mostly water vapor, Venus’s volcanoes release only about 6% water. This suggests that Venus’s volcanic magma contains very little water.
The study also highlighted that, unlike Earth and Mars, Venus shows no signs of erosion (侵蚀) caused by liquid water. Since liquid water is necessary for life as we know it, the lack of such evidence makes it unlikely that Venus ever supported Earth-like life.
While we may not know for certain if Venus ever supported life, the study suggests that it likely never had oceans. This discovery affects the search for life on other planets, especially those similar to Venus.
NASA’s DAVINCI mission, expected to reach Venus later this decade, may provide further answers. Understanding Venus’s history can help guide the search for life beyond Earth.

Last week, a bad event struck the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, a national park in the hills of central India. Four wild elephants were found dead, and six others from the same group were very sick. Despite efforts to treat them, all six elephants died within two days.
Forest officials and researchers alike were in confusion and wondered what brought down these strong animals. They focused on a fungus (真菌) that infects kodo millet, a type of grain that elephants eat in the region.
This is not the first time that animals or people have become ill after consuming kodo millet. In human infection cases, treatment with stomach washing helped people recover, but animals like dogs and elephants did not survive after eating the millet. In 1985, a case of kodo millet poisoning in humans led researchers to investigate. They found that the millet was infected by two types of fungi which produce a toxin (毒素) called cyclopiazonic acid (CPA). Later studies showed that other types of fungi can also produce this toxin.
Back in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, researchers believe that these fungi caused the recent deaths of the elephants. Tests on the elephants’ bodies found high levels of CPA in their stomachs.
Mycologist Kaustuv Sanyal explained that fungi release spores (孢子) that spread through the air. These spores favour wet conditions, which is why fungal growth increases after rain. The region around the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has heavy rains and a long rainy season, creating a conducive environment for the fungus to grow on the millet.
Despite the serious effects of the toxin on animals and humans, the fungi do not harm the plants. Researchers are still studying how the fungi affect plants. Although there are the high levels of CPA in the elephants’ bodies, the exact cause has not been confirmed. Forest officials plan to send millet samples (样品) from the area to experts for further testing. This could help determine if the fungi were responsible for the deaths of the elephants.
12.How did forest officials feel about the event in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was very young, my parents and I moved from China to the United States because my father was appointed as manager of the American branch. At first, everything seemed strange and overwhelming. The language barrier was the toughest part, but slowly, I adapted to my new surroundings and became fluent in English. School became easier, friends were made, and life in America started to feel like being at home.
However, my parents had different ideas. They insisted that we speak Chinese at home. They even went as far as to teach me Chinese characters and make me read classic Chinese literature. I remember spending long hours every weekend practicing writing characters, my hand cramping (抽筋) from the effort. My parents would quiz me on my vocabulary, and I’d have to recite poems and passages from ancient texts. At the time, I couldn’t understand why they were so determined about it. I often resisted, frustrated by the difficulty and wondering why I had to hold onto something that seemed irrelevant to my life in the US.
My father would patiently explain, “Although we’re living in the US, we mustn’t forget our roots. Our language is a part of who we are.” Despite his explanations, my teenage mind was too stubborn to appreciate his wisdom. He would sit with me, showing me the strokes (笔画) of each character, explaining their meanings, and sharing stories about our ancestors. His voice was calm and encouraging, even when I grew impatient and wanted to give up. “These characters carry our history,” he would say. “They tell the story of where we come from.”
As I grew older, my perspective started to shift. The more I learned about my heritage and our family’s history, the more I began to value the efforts my parents had made to keep our culture alive.
