The Earth is one huge, living organism, and we have the privilege of calling it home. We enjoy the beauty of blue skies, the shade of tall trees, and the soft motion of waves.
Being able to breathe clean air is largely a result of the way plants absorb carbon and purify the air on our planet home. The Amazon forest functions as Earth’s lungs. But deforestation (毁林) has made it difficult for the jungle to do its job.
Though there are many efforts to plant trees, the remoteness of the jungles makes it difficult. LuigiCani, the world-record-holding skydiver, felt like there was something he could do. After 14,000 jumps, Cani was ready to put his skills to good use.
Cani picked a 100-square-kilometer patch of land that needed to be reseeded in the northern part of the rainforest. The planning was detailed. For two months, seeds were collected by hand from nearby native plants. A special box the size of a refrigerator was built, a landing site was identified, and all the permits were secured from the local governments. The box had its own drag parachute (降落伞) to slow it down so Cani could catch up to it as it fell, open it at the right altitude, then safely throw it away and open his parachute.
The result was a cloud of 100 million seeds, bursting from the box like mad insects and settling into a gentle storm of potential trees floating from the sky in a beautiful eruption of life. The seeds fell at exactly where they needed to be. Ultimately, 95% would germinate (发芽) successfully. Like a proud father, Cani charts their growth via satellite images. Some trees will reach 50 meters in height, guarding the Amazon for generations to come.
Cani isn’t done with his efforts to care for our earthly home. His next jump will bring skydiving and ocean cleanup together. “Like the seed drop, this next project will have real meaning behind it.”
4.What is a challenge to grow trees in the Amazon
A.The extreme climate. B.The inaccessibility of the jungles.
C.Lack of effective methods. D.People’s deforestation.
5.What did Cani do to help
A.He helped to drop seeds. B.He donated parachutes.

B.Luigi Cani — a Record-Breaker
C.The Amazon Forest — Earth’s Lungs
D.Reforesting the Amazon with Luigi Cani’s Efforts
Over the last decade, the majority of businesses have changed to cashless transactions (交易). This shift to a subscription-based economy has been seen as a win-win for businesses and consumers alike, offering predictable income streams for companies and user convenience. However, it seems that the consumers may not be benefiting as much as we think.
At its core, the subscription model is economically advantageous for businesses. It transforms unpredictable purchases into steady income. This predictability is gold for companies, enabling better financial planning, investment, and growth strategies. For startups and established businesses alike, the allure of a subscription model lies in its ability to foster customer loyalty and generate consistent cash flow, elements crucial for survival and expansion in competitive markets.
For consumers, recognizing the negative effects of the subscription model requires a deeper understanding of its impact on spending behavior, particularly in the context of digital transactions. This model influences how consumers perceive and engage with their spending. The transition from traditional one-time purchases to a subscription-based approach capitalizes on the less tangible nature of digital payments, which can often lead to increased consumer spending.
This problem worsens in the context of subscription services, where consumers typically forget their subscriptions due to automated payments. Subscriptions tend to use the psychological principle of “set it and forget it.” This aspect is particularly beneficial for companies as it reduces churn rates (流失率) and increases customer lifetime value while allowing targeted marketing that further enhances profitability. However, this negatively impacts the consumers and it is easy for companies to raise prices without us fully realizing it.
Subscription culture has reshaped consumer behavior and financial habits with a combination of convenience and continuous access. Although these services offer a steady income model for businesses, they pose a risk of unnoticed financial loss, especially for people with budget constraints. The solution lies in users’ carefully managing subscriptions and ensuring that their chosen services provide ongoing value rather than serving as silent financial stress.
8.What does the underlined word “allure” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Principle. B.Precondition. C.Attraction. D.Challenge.
9.What disadvantage of cashless transactions is mentioned
A.The possibility of overspending. B.The damage to individual credit.
C.The dependence on online banking. D.The difficulty in withdrawing the payment.
10.What is most likely to be the author’s advice
A.Seek legal help when necessary. B.Manage subscriptions with care.
C.Keep track of the businesses closely. D.Cancel automated payment on the phone.
11.What is the author’s attitude toward the subscription-based economy
A.Objective. B.Doubtful. C.Optimistic. D.Critical.
In an emerging red flag for the digital era, sleep experts have warned us to avoid screen time in bed, sounding the alarm that light emitted from phones and other electronic devices can disrupt (扰乱) our sleep patterns.
Now, researchers have found that light disruption is not only a health concern for humans. A new study led by Professor James Nieh has found that artificial light disrupts the sleep-wake cycles of honey bees and poses a threat to their essential role as pollinators (传粉者).
Honey bees generally prefer to nest in dark environments and play a crucial role as pollinators of wild plants and important crops, providing services that support ecosystem stability and global food security. Without pollination, crops worth tens of millions of dollars would be at risk.
Like us, when bees experience a poor night’s sleep and disrupted sleep patterns, problems in behavior and function emerge. Sleep is crucial for the health and fitness of honey bees since they depend on a complicated system of communication known as the “waggle dance” that informs nest mates about the location of food sources in the environment. Bees dance more poorly and therefore do not communicate as well if they do not get enough sleep.
In the experiments, researchers compared groups of bees that sleep in the dark with others that were subjected to continuous artificial light. The results clearly showed that exposure to light for a long time significantly disrupted the sleep pattern of honey bees, leading to impaired (受损的) behaviors.
“Even without analyzing the data you can tell that there was something going on… the bees that were under constant light slept less and were more frequently disturbed by other bees compared to those kept in normal darkness. Also, bees under continuous light exhibited a preference for darker areas within their experimental cages,” said Nieh.
“Understanding the factors that affect bee health, such as light pollution, is essential for developing strategies to protect pollinator populations, and this research sheds new light on how such disturbances may be harming pollinators,” said Nieh.
12.What is the researchers’ new finding
A.Honey bees are highly active insects.
B.Artificial light is a danger to the ecosystem.
C.Electronic devices can disrupt people’s sleep patterns.
D.Bees’ health depends on the change of their environment.
13.Why is the waggle dance mentioned in the text
A.To prove the intelligence of honey bees.
B.To show how bees’ sleep pattern is disrupted.
C.To point out the importance of sleep for bees.
D.To indicate how bees are different from other insects.
14.What phenomenon appeared in the experiments
A.The energetic bees tended to sleep less.
B.The bees in the dark often disturbed each other.
C.The bees with impaired behaviors stopped dancing.
D.The bees exposed to constant artificial light preferred darkness.
15.Which statement might Nieh agree with
A.Light pollution is killing bees in nature.
B.Light pollution is not a small thing for bees.
C.Bees dance better in the sun than in the street light.
D.Bees change their sleep pattern to adapt to the environment.
How to Stop Making Excuses and Start Living Instead
Whether it’s delaying a difficult conversation or putting off pursuing your biggest dreams, excuses provide us with a temporary shelter from the discomfort we face in our daily lives. 16 By remaining in our comfort zone, we fail to grow and miss out on the good things life has to offer.
17 They make excuses, get stuck in their lives, and repeat the process over and over again. As a former excuse-maker myself, I have learned first hand just what it takes to learn how to stop making excuses for good. In this passage, I will share several practical tips on how to stop making excuses.
As we all know, one of the most common reasons that people make excuses is to avoid responsibility. To stop making excuses, you should shift the focus to your own duty. 18 Accepting full responsibility will definitely be uncomfortable at first. But it’s the most important thing you can do to break free from excuse-making.
Besides, you should challenge your limiting beliefs. We all have limiting beliefs that form the foundation of different types of excuses that we make. 19 They show up as you tell yourself that you’ll never succeed or that certain goals are out of reach. Consider replacing the negative thoughts with more positive beliefs.
Setting goals is one of the best ways to overcome excuses. When setting goals, it’s important to be realistic about what you want to achieve. Try breaking big dreams into specific and achievable goals. 20
A.In this way, you can easily set a realistic goal.
B.These excuses will leave others a bad impression.
C.There are many examples of limiting beliefs in our lives.
D.In my life, I see a lot of people get stuck in the same cycle.
E.Then you’ ll notice the excuses you make begin to lose their power.
F.The more concrete your goals are, the less room there is for excuses.
G.However, they do this at the cost of our long-term sense of satisfaction.

My tears flowed when the commercial came on again. It seemed like the station was playing this commercial every fifteen minutes, and I couldn’t bear to see it again. I don’t know what the advertisement was trying to sell, but a large, lovely family was gathered around a long table with a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone was talking, laughing, and beaming happily at one another.
That was my family once. Those were such happy times, and I never thought about the time when they would be just a memory. For the past three years, there has only been me. This Thanksgiving, Iplanned to open a can of soup and sit alone at my kitchen table again. It would just be me and my memories.
The next morning, I went to the supermarket to pick up a few things. Most of the other shoppers were putting huge turkeys and hams in their carts, preparing for Thanksgiving Day. I stood looking at the cans of soup while people with carts full with all kinds of wonderful things passed me. I sighed. “You can do a little better than this,” I said to myself, looking at the turkey in my hand.
On my way out of the store, I stopped by the bulletin board where people posted things for sale, odd jobs they needed done, babysitter want ads, and so forth. I paused in front of the bulletin board as an idea formed in my mind. Before I could talk myself out of it, I fished around in my purse for the paper and pen. There was a bench nearby, and I sat down to carefully compose my note. It had to sound sincere.
My heart raced as I wrote it:
Are you going to be alone on Thanksgiving Day So am I. But we don’t have to be. Let’s get together and share a meal, some conversations, and some companionship. Everyone who is interested is encouraged to reply. No restrictions of any kind. Any age, sex, race, religion, etc. If you, like me, don’t look forward to being alone on Thanksgiving Day, please call.

But on my way home, I regretted writing that note. “Who do you think wants to have Thanksgiving dinner with strangers You’re foolish. What if some annoying person show up at the door ” I felt a little frustrated. However, I didn’t go back to the supermarket to tear my note off the board, thinking no one would take it seriously. Two days passed, and I didn’t hear from anything. Then, on the third day, I got a call from a retired schoolteacher. On the fourth day, I got three more calls.
On the fifth day, I had ten people eager to be a part of the Thanksgiving dinner. There were five retired women, three retired men, a construction worker and a nurse’s assistant. Ten people are enough for the Thanksgiving dinner, so I decided that it was time to take down the note. When the Thanksgiving day came, I baked a huge turkey and everyone else contributed what they could. Although the atmosphere was a little embarrassing at first, soon everyone was laughing, talking, and having a good time. I glanced around and smiled. Once again, my house was filled with chatter and laughter.
