Make the Most of Your Time in Amsterdam
Amsterdam — a marvelous city, which has so much to offer is waiting for you.
Go Get Lost
Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, so getting around on foot is a great way to really take everything in. Besides, if you wander around, you’ll find hidden gems that you’d likely miss if you’re just going from monument to museum the whole time. Choose a neighborhood and start exploring. You can start with Jordaan or De Pijp.
Time To Eat
While this might come as a surprise, Belgian Waffles are quite delicious here. If you want to enjoy a unique brunch, visit Coffee and Coconuts, which is located in an old cinema from the 1920’s. You can enjoy eggs, tacos, and their signature dish: coconut pancakes. There are so many cheese shops here, so you seriously have to do yourself a favor and buy some cheese. Of course, no trip to Amsterdam is really complete without trying the famous fries. While you can enjoy them any time of the day, of course the best time to have these is as a late night snack to really cap the day off.
Visit Some Museums
Of course, even if you’re here for two days, that’s plenty of time for a museum or two. The classics are of course the Van Gough museum, Rijksmuseum and Stedilijk Museum, as well as the Anne Frank House — all of which are wonderful. If you’re looking for a more alternative museum experience, try out the Amsterdam Tulip Museum where you can learn all about the flowers that are synonymous with the city. There’s also the FOAM photography museum which includes a reading room full of photography books you can look though.
21.According to the text, what is the best way to explore the city
A.On foot. B.By car. C.By bike. D.By bus.
22.Which of the following is highly recommended by the author
A.Getting to various attractions. B.Buying some handmade crafts.
C.Having fries as a late night snack. D.Watching traditional performances.
23.Which museum best suits people interested in flowers
A.Van Gough museum. B.Anne Frank House.
C.Amsterdam Tulip Museum. D.FOAM photography museum.
Meles Wudima fled from his village near Addis Ababa to the Ethiopian capital because he had nowhere else to go. He was five years old and both his parents were dead. He’d headed to his aunt’s, but she had seven children and couldn’t take him in permanently. Soon Wudima was participating in the street economy, along with roughly 10,000 other orphaned kids in Addis. To survive, he shined shoes, sold peanuts and begged.
Then, when he was about nine, Wudima met Meheret Worku. A year earlier, in 1996, Worku had flown from Edmonton to her hometown of Addis. Accompanying Worku were her husband, Scott Smillie (a social worker), and their two children. The family had come with the intention of helping street-involved children, but without a set plan.
Worku had left Ethiopia in 1981 on a scholarship to Germany. From Germany she moved to Edmonton, finished her bachelor of science degree at the University of Alberta, began teaching, met Smillie and started a family. These opportunities were thanks to her education — a gift from her father.
In Ethiopia, all children can attend government school, but many don’t. Uniforms, books and other expenses are one barrier; poor health or being forced into work are others. Smillie and Worku decided to focus on getting orphaned street-involved children to class. Worku met Wudima on her second trip, and he started receiving supplies and food and was provided with housing shortly thereafter.
As the years ticked by, Worku continued to take calls in the middle of the night and travel back and forth between Canada and Ethiopia to ensure Wudima and dozens of others got necessities. From Edmonton, Smillie organized financial donations, including partnerships with the Knox Metropolitan United Church.
Wudima has stayed in touch with Worku. Now 29, he has a job as a tour guide. “Some young people are addicted to drugs or they become pickpockets,” he says. “If you have school, that’s a good advantage to keep yourself from everything.”
24.What can we learn about Meles Wudima from paragraph 1
A.He was adopted by his aunt. B.He became a pickpocket.
C.He attended a government school. D.He had to support himself.
25.How did Smillie and Worku help the orphaned street-involved children
① By setting up a school for them. ② By providing them with necessities.
③ By organizing financial donations. ④ By cooperating with a church.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
26.Which of the following best describe Worku
A.Inspiring and kind. B.Enthusiastic and patient.
C.Funny and smart. D.Careful and trustful.
27.What can we infer about Wudima
A.Love breaks down barriers.
B.Education promises a bright future.
C.Great hopes make great man.
D.Two heads are better than one.
Diet containing lots of salt can contribute to increased levels of stress, a new study shows. Scientists found in studies of mice that a high-salt diet increased the levels of a stress hormone by 75 per cent. Experts hope the findings will encourage a review of public health policy around salt consumption, aiming at manufacturers reducing the amount of salt in processed food.
The recommended salt intake for adults is less than six grams a day but most people regularly eat about nine grams. This can contribute to higher blood pressure, which increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and dementia.
While effects on the heart and circulatory(循环) system have been ascertained, little was known about the impact of a high-salt diet on a person’s behaviour. To study this, experts from the University of Edinburgh used mice, who ordinarily have a low-salt diet, and gave them high-salt food to reflect the typical intake of humans.
They found that not only did resting stress hormone levels increase, but the mice’s hormone response to environmental stress was double that of mice that had a normal diet. Salt intake increased the activity of genes that produce the proteins in the brain which control how the body responds to stress.
Experts say further studies are already underway to understand if a high-salt intake leads to other behavioural changes such as anxiety and aggression. Matthew Bailey, professor of Renal Physiology at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cardiovascular Science, said: “We are what we eat and understanding how high-salt food changes our mental health is an important step to improving wellbeing. We know that eating too much salt damages our heart, blood vessels(血管) and kidneys. This study now tells us that high salt in our food also changes the way our brain handles stress.”
28.What are the findings expected to bring about eventually
A.Manufacturers adding less salt to processed food.
B.People debating the policy on public health.
C.Decreased levels of stress hormones.
D.Reduced amount of processed food.
29.What does the underlined word “ascertained” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Ignored. B.Restored.
C.Reduced. D.Confirmed.
30.Which of the following may be a subject of further research
A.What policy on salt should be.
B.How a high-salt intake affects blood pressure.
C.How much salt intake is appropriate.
D.Whether a high-salt intake causes anxiety.
31.What may be a suitable little for the text
A.Most people regularly take in too much salt.
B.Mental health is important to improving well being.
C.Diet containing much salt increases levels of stress.
D.Less than six grams of salt a day is recommended.
Human innovation (创新) has allowed people to explore space for decades. Within a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer without a resupply. But missions to further reaches of space are a different matter. Establishing a base on the moon or sending humans to Mars seems just on the horizon. That can only happen if innovative and foolproof ways are developed to supply humans with enough air, water and food.
One company, Interstellar Labs, has developed an advanced, closed loop system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their AI managed greenhouses BioPods and they are designed to be very efficient. In fact, Interstellar Labs claims that BioPods reduce the amount of land and water needed to produce food by 99 percent. That is not an impossible claim. BioPods don’t use any soil to grow plants, and the vast majority of water is recycled and recirculated.
Plants are grown inside BioPods using aeroponics, the practice of hanging plants in the air and spraying a mist of nutrient-rich water on their roots. By using aeroponics, the BioPod system carefully conserves water with amazing results. According to Interstellar labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.
The conditions inside of a BioPod are controlled by AI, which can change anything from the lighting to the temperature and humidity to maximize growth. This optimizes (使最优化) growing conditions no matter what the environment is outside, including the emptiness of space.
The BioPods themselves can be built in almost any environment, too. The pod’s structure is made with a 3D printer using raw materials in liquid form. The inside part is sealed with an inflatable membrane (充气膜) that is also 3D-printed. This means that a BioPod could be built right on the surface of the moon or Mars, making transporting a large structure unnecessary.
Like most technology developed for space exploration, BioPods can also be used on Earth to provide highly efficient food production systems even in the harshest environments.
32.In writing paragraph 1, the author aims to____________.
A.propose a definition B.introduce a topic
C.make a comparison D.reach a conclusion
33.Which of the following best describes Biopods
A.They are deigned to be used in harsh environments on Earth.
B.They are easy to operate without need for soil or water.
C.They are highly productive and efficient greenhouses.
D.They are widely used for space exploration.
34.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Space Exploration with BioPods B.Growing Food in the Space Pods
C.Food Consumption in Space Station D.3D Printers Used in Space Lab
35.What is the writer’s attitude to the BioPod
A.Cautious. B.Indifferent. C.Positive. D.Ambiguous.

It was time for the ice cream event that my small youth group had waited for many months. The group consisted of five boys; one of them was Scott.
Scott always had a positive attitude. He looked on the bright side of things and never criticized anyone. But Scott was different from the rest of us because he was disabled, suffering from a disease which caused hands shaking constantly. Therefore, he was unable to participate in activities in most cases. No one ever made fun of him to his face, but at times, people would laugh or stare in his presence. But Scott never worried; he just kept his head up high and ignored them.
Finally, the night of the ice cream event descended. My friends and I rushed to the church basement and waited with scoops (冰淇淋勺) in hand for the guests to arrive. One by one, people filed in, all hoping to get a creamy and tasty scoop of ice cream. But what they ended up getting was a hard and frozen mass. We waited for a while for the ice cream to melt, and eventually it did.
Once the ice cream melted, we had another problem. It had turned into three pools of coconut, chocolate, and strawberry. But we persisted in serving it. We had our chance to serve, except for Scott. So, being as kind as possible, I gave Scott a chance to scoop and serve. As soon as Scott gripped the scoop, our ice cream troubles grew beyond control. Milky ice cream was flung in every direction and made a mess on people, but there was no sign for him to come to a stop on account of his terrible control of trembling hands. At that moment, a stir of unrest and dissatisfaction rippled through the crowd.

根据最后一段“Experts say further studies are already underway to understand if a high-salt intake leads to other behavioural changes such as anxiety and aggression. (专家表示,进一步的研究已经在进行中,以了解高盐摄入是否会导致焦虑和攻击等其他行为变化。)”可知,高盐摄入是否会引起焦虑将是未来研究的课题之一。故选D。

(一家名为星际实验室(Interstellar Labs)的公司开发了一种先进的闭环系统,可以在任何地方种植植物,甚至在太空中。)”以及下文对这个系统的介绍,可知第一段是为了引出本文的话题,故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“They call their AI managed greenhouses BioPods and they are designed to be very efficient. (他们把人工智能管理的温室称为BioPods,它们被设计得非常高效。)”和第三段“According to Interstellar labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water. (根据星际实验室的说法,biopod种植的植物的产量比传统种植的植物高300倍,只需要少量的水。)”可知Biopods是高效和高产的温室,故选C。
34.主旨大意题。根据第二段“One company, Interstellar Labs, has developed an advanced, closed loop system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. (一家公司,星际实验室开发了一种先进的闭环系统,可以在任何地方种植植物,甚至在太空中。)”及全文可知,文章主要介绍了一家公司开发了一种先进的闭环系统,可以在太空舱里种植植物,为宇航员提供食物。所以B选项“Growing Food in the Space Pods(在太空舱里种植食物) ”作为文章标题最为合适。故选B。

(他们把人工智能管理的温室称为BioPods,它们被设计得非常高效。)”和第三段“According to Interstellar labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water. 以及最后一段“Like most technology developed for space exploration, BioPods can also be used on Earth to provide highly efficient food production systems even in the harshest environments.

故填a。
故填What。

Abruptly, a woman stormed forward and grabbed the scoop. She clenched her fist, knitted her eyebrows and glared at Scott. Suddenly, she held the scoop high and roared to blame. Meanwhile, a flush of dissatisfaction and then fury overwhelming the crowd, they began to yell. Evidently, Scott was scared, rooted to the spot, with his forehead sweaty and his face pale. At the sight of this, I stepped forward, cleared my throat and shouted to explain Scott’s spirit of devotion despite disability. Astonishment and then silence took hold of the crowd, after which she apologized and returned the scoop.
Tears blurred his eyes as Scott got hold of the scoop again. He strained every nerve to control his hands to scoop ice cream. So regretful was the woman that she even came to assist him. Now, fully aware of the situation, the crowd settled down and stood in line. They beamed with smiles and offered words of encouragement as they received ice cream. As the last scoop of ice cream was served, a symphony of laughter and euphoria permeated the basement. It was at this moment that I came to the enlightenment that this experience was a testament of understanding, warmth and kindness.
