For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished (贫困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn’t possible. A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father’s home — Balsabo in Brazil — converted his initial plan. “All locals didn’t have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open.” Felipe Rossi recalled. “A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems.”
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning. fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity’ program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is “struggling to survive” because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. “Challenging as it is, it did bring healthy teeth as well as renewed confidence to the locals. We will continue this transformative act whatever difficulties we will face”. Felipe said with a strong will.

B. The passion for dental health.
C. The encounter with local s lacking dental care.
D. The professional skills and knowledge from college.
26. Which of the following can best describe Felipe Rossi
A. Hopeful and diligent.
B. Faithful and ambitious.
C. Intelligent and creative.
D. Charitable and dedicated.
27. What do we know about Porsorriso

At a conference on self-driving cars, Mike Harp, a government official, asked a seemingly simple question about what happens when his own car meets a driver-less vehicle. “If I honk (按喇叭), will it do any good ” Harp wanted to know. Unfortunately, manufacturers didn’t have an answer. “We haven’t reached that point of deciding how and whether it would be appropriate for vehicles to react and in which way to honking,” said one of them. The brief exchange highlights a thorn in the side of automakers and policymakers alike: Self-driving cars will have to share the road with human drivers, likely for decades to come. Those vehicles must therefore respond and adapt to the peculiarities and mistakes of humans behind wheel.
Self-driving technology has already come a long way. Cars being tested on the road today use cameras and radar, for example, to detect the movements of nearby cyclists and pedestrians. There are already driver-assist technologies built into some cars that monitor the speed of vehicles around you, detect potential accidents before they occur, and automatically slow or stop the car to avoid a wreck. In a world where all cars drive themselves, the technology could operate at peak efficiency. Supporters of self-driving cars say that speed limits could be raised and fatal crashes largely avoided as no traffic laws are broken and poor drivers become a thing of the past.
But the change to driver-less vehicles is expected to be gradual, and will likely start with ride-sharing services, as the costs of personally owning a self-driving car remain extremely high. That means man and machine will have to play nice on roadways. “There are so many interesting situations,” such as honking a horn, Harp said. When “another car with a driver meets a self-driving car without a driver in there and they realize that, it will frighten some people. How that’s going to be dealt with will be part of the fun part of this process.
Any driver can tell you that driving involves a lot of social interaction, particularly the hand gestures and eye contact of fellow drivers. Much of that interaction between drivers will eventually be digital as cars increasingly collect data and share it with the vehicles around them. If a car speeds up, slows down or prepares for a stop, for example, that would be communicated immediately and electronically to the other vehicles on the road. Like self-driving technology, however, it will be years before the vehicle-to-vehicle communication is common.
That challenge is being taken into account as driver-less vehicles are tested on public roads. But the honking issue is particularly tricky because it’s subject to interpretation. It’s going to be really hard for a driver-less vehicle, even if it hears the honk, to figure out what that honk means.
28. In paragraph 1, “a thorn” refers to__________.
A. the issue that human drivers have peculiarities and make mistakes
B. the prediction that self-driving cars will be common in the future
C. the fact that driver-less cars co-exist with cars driven by humans
D. the technology that ensures driver-less cars are safe on the road
29. Which of the following can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Most people don’t advocate self-driving technology.
B. Inter-vehicle communication is superior to inter-personal interaction.
C. Social interaction will decrease among drivers behind the wheel.
D. More data is needed to make self-driving technology a reality much sooner.
30. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. The simple question about self-driving cars we still can’t answer
B. A golden opportunity for driver-less cars we can’t afford to miss
C. Hidden secrets of self-driving cars we can’t reveal
D. Potential risks of driver-less cars we can’t ignore
D
Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war War is an ancient institution, which has occurred ever since men were organized into units larger than the family. In the past human race managed to survive it. Why should it not continue to survive even if wars go on occurring from time to time Moreover, people like war, and will feel frustrated without it. And without war there will be no adequate opportunity for heroism or self-sacrifice.
Modem technology has changed this. Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration (通过仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic (武断的) statements that are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their followers believe in them so fanatically that they are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between different countries, but between man and the atom bomb.
31. From the passage we can learn that war now is ______.
A. as bad as in the past B. worse than in the past
C. as necessary as in the past D. not so dangerous as in the past
32. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Men, as well as war, will have to make the ultimate choice between the two.
B. Modern technology has empowered man to choose whether to have war or not.
C. At least 6,000 years later, man has finally decided to abandon war once and for all.
D. People will eventually destroy themselves if they choose to go to war at modern times.
33. As for ideology, what does the author intend to tell us
A. Certain ideology is superior regarding its truthfulness.
B. It is useless to adopt an ideology to prevent war.
C. Not every ideology is not worth fighting for.
D. It is wrong to follow any ideology.
34. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. War or No War, That Is A Question
B. Nuclear Weapons Bring the End of Human Race
C. Towards a Future Without War: A Call for Global Arbitration
D. From Ideology to Negotiation: A New Approach to International Conflicts

Time or Money
Would you rather have a higher salary or the freedom to work from anywhere in the world According to a survey, seven out of ten surveyed readers would consider accepting a lower salary for more perks (额外收入) and benefits — one in ten would definitely do so. ____35____.
For today’s workforce, especially Gen Zs and millennials (千禧一代), perks extend far beyond the traditional benefits package. They are putting a lot of focus on work-life balance, career advancement, and the company’s culture and values. Among all, a flexible work arrangement tops the list of those values. ____36____. The ability to control when and where they work not only boosts productivity but also helps prevent burnout. This shift enforces companies to demonstrate that they value outcomes and results over rigid schedules. In return, employees feel trusted, valued, and empowered, performing at their best when given the flexibility to balance their personal and professional lives.
____37____. For women, especially working mothers, unclear boundaries between home and work can make them feel like they are always working, which increases the risk of burnout. Moreover, remote work can intensify (增强) the challenges associated with career advancement, as fewer in-person interactions can lead to being overlooked or sidelined. ____38____. This belief could negatively affect their chances for promotions and leadership opportunities.
Looking ahead, flexible work arrangements are here to stay and will likely continue to evolve. ____39____. Organizations should ensure equitable opportunities consistent with flexible work models, such as offering personalized arrangements instead of one-size-fits-all solutions.
A. This is where company policies can play a crucial role.
B. Employers invest a lot in creating attractive work environments.
C. It provides the independence and freedom younger employees seek.
D. While flexible work arrangements offer benefits, they also have drawbacks.
E. Flexibility and work-life balance now outweigh financial rewards for many.
F But what are these perks and how are companies adapting to meet these expectations
G. Furthermore, those who prefer flexibility are often seen as less committed to their careers.
第三部分书面表达(共两节, 32分)
第一节(共4小题; 第40、41题各2分, 第42题3分, 第43题5分, 共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
Gestures refer to the communication where visible bodily actions are used to communicate important messages. They include movement of hands, face, or other parts of the body. Gestures benefit our lives a lot. Take language learning.
In some languages, certain syllables (音节) within words are pronounced with markedly more weight than others, called lexical stress. Languages such as English commonly feature lexical stress. For example, the word “accent” involves more emphasis on the first syllable, “ac”, than the second, “cent”. Native speakers of Chinese, however, don’t use lexical stress and therefore find it difficult to learn languages that feature it.
Making any hand gesture could help learners recognize lexical stress, which has been proved by Xing Tian’s team. They selected 124 native Chinese speakers, who watched videos of people performing hand movements that were synced(同步的) to recordings of the same English words. In addition, they also found when more pronounced gestures matched the stressed syllable, the participants were particularly good at identifying it.
The research involved several experiments, which makes it difficult to combine the results. Nevertheless, Tian estimates that the use of gestures helped identify lexical stress between 10 and 15 percent more accurately compared with no gestures at all, and how much help depends on the nature of gestures.
A follow-up study conducted by another team exposed the same Chinese speakers to Russian words and got similar results. “Our findings highlight the functional role of gestures in enhancing speech learning, suggesting practical strategies for language teaching and learning,” the researchers write in their paper.
The benefits of gestures extend far beyond teaching and learning. Since gestures are deeply integrated into our daily lives, they deserve more of our attention.
