The State of Colorado has four of the best parks out of the 58 national parks in the United States. The parks
have some of the best scenery of all the national parks.
Black Canyon (峡谷) of Gunnison National Park
This park offers the most breathtaking views from up in the mountains into the canyons below. While
exploring the canyons, you will find that the walls drop nearly straight down into the narrow valleys of the
snake-like rivers below. Visitors are offered more than 100 camping sites, and a lot of bird species and many
animals are native to the area.
Rocky Mountain National Park
It is the only national park in the north central region in the state of Colorado. Elevations in this park are
anywhere from 8,000 feet to 14,259 feet at the top of Longs Peak. While traveling throughout this park you will
notice two very different climates because of the difference the upper peaks of the Rocky Mountains make. You can
enjoy 359 miles of hiking trails, a lot of places for camping, horse-back riding and beautiful scenery.
Mesa Verde National Park
This is probably the most interesting national park, offering a fascinating trip back in time to 600 AD up to
1300 AD.This park was declared a protected national park in 1906 because of the cliff dwellings(住所) that were
found throughout the area, which were once home to American Indians. Many of these dwellings can be walked
through, while you imagine what each room may have been used for so many years ago.
Great Sand Dunes (沙丘) National Park
The Great Sand Dunes National Park lies in south central Colorado, about 127 miles from Pueblo. This park

Levon Biss was looking at insects from his garden through a microscope he bought for his son. For fun, they
unintentionally placed an insect under the lens (镜片). “It is amazingly beautiful!” they both screamed.
The father had been making a career taking photographs for advertisements. But that experience gave him a
new direction. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of habitat loss and climate change. Biss
thought that if people could see what he saw through his son’s microscope, they would care more about protecting
insects.
So Biss turned to macrophotography: taking close-up pictures of small things, like flowers or bugs. His work
has attracted attention not just for its unusual beauty. It also raises awareness about the need for conservation.
In 2016, Biss showed his first insect project, Microsculpture. The term refers to the features of an insect’s
exoskeleton, or outer shell, which develops over time as the bug adapts to its environment.
Biss’s pictures capture the insects in all their microscopic details. Then he blows up the images until the
insects become larger than life, some of them eight feet tall. But each image takes weeks to make. He uses a digital
camera with a microscope lens. The camera is fixed on a computerized track, which allows Biss to take a shot, then
move the camera by seven microns (微米) — a distance equals to about 1/10 the thickness of a human hair —
第 4页/共 12页
for the next shot. In the end, Biss might take 10,000 shots of a bug. A computer combines these small pictures into
a single image.
Biss’s latest exhibition is Extinct and Endangered at the American Museum of Natural History. He selected
bugs that were extinct or endangered, hoping his photographs would serve as a better purpose. “I communicate
visually,” he says, “The way I work is through pictures. But I think it’s my duty to shake things up and get people
to pay attention.”
4. What made Levon Biss turn to macrophotography
A. Beautiful insects. B. Attractive environment.
C. An expensive microscope. D. An accidental observation.
5. How does Levon Biss manage to capture insects’ microscopic details
A. By taking a shot at them twice.
B. By adjusting the camera on a track.
C. By taking close-up pictures countless times.
D. By putting them in order on a computer.
6. What does the underlined phrase “shake things up” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Get rid of the prejudice.
B. Take action to save wildlife.
C. Spare no efforts to face difficulties.
D. Make people think about nature differently.
7. Which of the following best describes Levon Biss
A. Patient and responsible. B. Wealthy and ambitious.
C. Polite and strong-willed. D. Curious and easy-going.

Good news, coffee lovers: Your daily cup of Joe might be doing good to your heart, namely by helping to
reduce the risk of heart failure, suggest the findings of a new study. In an analysis of data from three large studies
on the topic, researchers found that those who reported drinking one or more cups of caffeinated (含咖徘因的)
coffee a day had “a related decreased long-term heart failure risk”.
For the report published in Circulation: Heart Failure, researchers used machine learning to examine data
from a large study from the Framingham Heart Study, referencing this data against two other studies. “Each study
included at least 10 years of follow-up, and altogether the studies provided information on more than 21,000 U.S.
第 5页/共 12页
adult participants,” researchers said.
When analyzing the Framingham Heart Study, researchers noted that when compared to non-coffee drinkers,
coffee drinkers’ risk of heart failure decreased by 5% to 12% for each cup they drank each day. As for
decaffeinated coffee, researchers noted that it did, not have the same benefits as caffeinated coffee, with one study
suggesting that decaffeinated coffee may have an opposite effect.
Dr. David Kao, senior study author, said in a statement, “The relation between caffeine and heart failure risk
reduction was surprising. Coffee and caffeine are often considered by the general population to be ‘bad’ for the
heart because people relate them to health problems like palpitations, high blood pressure, etc. The relationship
between increasing caffeine consumption and decreasing heart failure risk turns that thought on its head.”
“However, there is not yet enough clear evidence to prove that increasing coffee consumption can decrease the
risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight, or exercising,” Kao
noted. The researchers also warned that the findings only focused on black coffee, that is, plain coffee, without
added sugar and high-fat dairy products such as cream.
8. What’s the finding of the new study
A. The number of heart failure cases has decreased gradually.
B. Coffee can help lower the possibility of heart failure.
C. Caffeine does harm to people’s health.
D. Coffee helps cure heart disease.
9. How did researchers achieve their finding
A. By searching online for detailed information.
B. By interviewing experts about their opinions.
C. By conducting surveys among young adults.
D. By comparing data from long-term studies.
10 What can directly affect the result of the study
A. The brand of coffee.
B. The age of the subjects.
C. The addition of caffeine to coffee.
D. The amount of coffee consumption.
11. What is Dr. Kao’s attitude towards the result
第 6页/共 12页
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Curious. D. Careful.

“How many of us as children have stared up at a church-like top of a giant tree and climbed it in wonder,
which is a rally special part of our lives ” asks Bill Laurance, a tropical ecologist at James Cook University. “The
leaves of big trees in forests are spreading out in all directions. We’re faced with organisms that have evolved for
long periods of ecological stability.”
“There’s a lot to discuss on the issue,” says David Lindenmayer, a conservation ecologist at the Australian
National University. “Climate change will mean that, in some forests, big trees won’t reach the same sizes they
used to.” The effects of climate change, including long droughts, more invasive species and so on increase the
simple physical challenges that big trees face in pulling water from their roots to their leaves and withstanding
windstorms.
Lindenmayer and Laurance define “large, old trees” as the largest five percent mature trees within a species.
The flexible definition means that in some forests, the large, old trees might be only 20 meters tall and 100 years
old.
These large, old trees control the surrounding plant communities, affect water and nutrient distribution, and
provide food and shelter for wildlife. “They’re really the breadbaskets of the forest,” says Laurance. “This is a very
environmentally and ecologically important group of organisms, and they need special care and handling.”
Determining the distribution and habitat requirements for large, old trees in the landscape is the first step towards
ensuring their survival, “We have to ensure that what we’re thinking is long-term, to match the way these trees have
existed for hundreds or even thousands of years,” says Laurance. “It’s going to be a real challenge to keep some
places where there is still wildlife and the big church-like trees that we all really care about.”
12. How does the author lead in the topic of the text
A. By definition. B. By comparison.
C. By quoting someone’s words. D. By drawing some conclusions.
13. What can we learn about big trees from paragraph 2
A. They are affected by various factors.
B. They have become shorter but thicker.
C. They easily pull water from their roots.
D. They grow taller because of climate change.
14. Which of the following does Laurance want to express in the last paragraph
第 7页/共 12页
A. The plants around control trees’ survival.
B. It is necessary to take good care of big trees.
C. Big trees mainly depend on wildlife for survival.
D. Planting big trees is the first step in forest protection.
15. What can be the best title for the text

B. Keep Ecological Stability
C. Deal with Forest Organisms
D. Fight Against Climate Change

Be a true runner
For me it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams
to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew
this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every
chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no
one’s first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a
counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We
need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame
of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last
stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
第 11页/共 12页
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little
too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the
muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree
root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

In a moment,Billwasupandrunning.I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even
feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’
s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and
accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The
gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last
ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line.
Ididn’tknowwhen I crossedtheline.I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which
signaled the birth of the champion. I stopped and opened my eyes and saw my camp of kids and the camp
counsellor gathering around me. “Wehave won the race! Weare the champion!” they shouted and cheered,
throwing me in the air. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me.
Tome, the race meant more than a champion; it well proved that I was not a loser as an athlete and that I could
further explore my potential. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.”
