Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright(清 明 ) is the only one
whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The
words “clear” and “bright” describe the weather during this period. Temperatures
begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in
the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors, however, here are several
things you may not know about Clear and Bright.
2
Spring Outings
Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out
and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers blossom, and the sun shines brightly,
everything returns to life. It is a fine time to appreciate the beauty of nature.
Flying Kites
Flying kites is an activity favored by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping
Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little
lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns
look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is
that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that
this brings good luck and that diseases can be chased away by doing this.
Cuju
Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. CuJu is a ball made of
leather with hairs plugged in it. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor first invented it
for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when
they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival.
Feasting on Qingtuan
In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular
on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make
the cakes, people mash(捣碎) barnyard grass(艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix
the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them.
Pretty and delicate, qingtuan has a special flavor.

Had she been a singer, she might have been an American star. But Clora
Bryant played the trumpet, and reputation came slowly. Bryant, a barrier breaker who
stood firm in her determination to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open
sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died on August 25, in 2019, in Los Angeles,
when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill battle, said her son Darrin. “It
was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only fueled her fire, and
made her more resolved.”
Bryant played the trumpet with such passion and she became a mainstay in the
growing jazz scene in the 1940s. Dizzy Gillespie once told Times jazz critic Leonard
Feather that Bryant was the most underrated (低估) trumpet player in L.A.
But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a son’s Long Beach,
in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当铺). “A
lot of clubs have closed.” she told the Times. “And how many female trumpet players
do you see working ”
Bryant and her brothers were raised by their father, a patient man who
encouraged his children to think big. She wanted to be in the high school marching
band, but Charles Bryant warned his daughter she’d likely face resistance. “But
anything you want to do, I’m behind you,” she recalled. It was her father who
encouraged her to do whatever she wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger.
24.What does the underlined word “resolved” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Adventurous. B. Unique. C. Emotional. D. Determined.
25.Why is “Social Security” mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To show people’s acts of kindness.
B. To prove Bryant’s struggle through life.
C. To explain how Bryant earned his living.
D. To stress the importance of the pawnshop.
26.What’s the key reason for Bryant’s being underrated
A. The open sexism from society.
B. The poor family background.
C. The terrible financial situation.
D. The mental pressure from colleagues.
27.What played an important role for Bryant to stick to her dream
A. Her son’s support. B. Her brothers’ company.
C. Her strict family education.D. Her father’s encouragement.

Human responses to moral dilemmas (道 德 困 境 ) can be influenced by
4
statements written by the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, according to a study
published in Scientific Reports. The findings indicate that users may undervalue the
extent to which their own moral judgments can be influenced by the chatbot.
Sebastian Krigel and colleagues asked ChatGPT multiple times whether it is
right to sacrifice (牺牲) the life of one person in order to save the lives of five others.
They found that ChatGPT wrote random statements arguing both for and against
sacrificing one life, indicating that it is not biased towards a certain moral stance (立
场).
The authors then presented 767 U.S. participants, who were on average 39
years old, with a dilemma whether to sacrifice one person’s life to save five others.
Before answering, participants read a statement provided by ChatGPT arguing either
for or against sacrificing one life to save five. Statements were from either a moral
advisor or ChatGPT. After answering, participants were asked whether the statement
they read influenced their answers.
Eighty percent of participants reported that their answers were not influenced
by the statements they read. However, the authors found that the answers participants
believed they would have provided without reading the statements were still more
likely to agree with the moral stance of the statement they did read than with the
opposite stance. This indicates that participants may have underestimated the
influence of ChatGPT’s statements on their own moral judgments.
The authors suggest that the possibility for chatbots to influence human moral
judgments highlights the need for education to help humans better understand
artificial intelligence. They propose that future research should design chatbots that
either decline to answer questions requiring a moral judgment or answer these
questions by providing multiple arguments and warnings.
28. What are ChatGPT’s answers to a certain moral stance
A. changeable. B. valuable. C. creative. D. simple.
29 What is learned about the participants
A. They admitted the power of ChatGPT.
B. They were interviewed by a moral advisor.
C. They were affected by ChatGPT unknowingly.
D. They were presented with different moral dilemmas.
30. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Different findings of the study. B. Future possibility for chatbots.
C. Major focuses of future education. D. Solutions to the impact of chatbots.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. ChatGPT Tends to Cause Moral Panics.
B. ChatGPT: Is It Likely to Affect Our Life
5
C. ChatGPT:Why Is It Making Us So Nervous
D. ChatGPT Can Influence Human Moral Judgments.

Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and
animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木丛)in the Amazon may have more
species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in
just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide
and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own
perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层)
of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest
animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches,
although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think
this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more
difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must
climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled
leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves
turn into food for the trees and other forest life.
They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75%of
their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may
be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect
you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours,
streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity( 湿 气 ) of large rainforests
contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of
rain.
32. What can we learn about rainforests from the first paragraph
A. They produce oxygen. B. They cover a vast area.
C. They are well managed. D. They are rich in wildlife.
33. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of rainforests
A. Heavy rains B. Big trees.
C. Small plants. D. Forest animals.
34. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other
A. For more sunlight.B. For more growing space.
C. For self-protection. D. For the detection of insects.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Life-Giving Rainforests B. The Law of the Jungle
C. Animals in the Amazon D. Weather in Rainforests

Mercy for a thief
A frantic call came into Jimmy Gilleece’s bar this past March. A newly married
woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet.
She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was
tucked inside.
Gilleece, the barkeeper, spent several hours watching surveillance footage(监
He noticed a young man in a hoodie approach the bench that the woman had
just sat on. He put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a clip on
the bar’s Facebook page.
Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about
the post from his sister. Prather told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in
two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and
threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the
docks. There, after talking with the teen, Gilleece knew Prather wasn’t getting along
with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece thought Prather
was more of a kid than a criminal. He thought he had to help him somehow. But the
police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could
probably be sent to the jail.
The next day, Gilleece had two local divers search the waters where Prather
had thrown the wallet. A policewoman was waiting for them there. More than an hour
9
passed, with no sign of the ring. Prather looked nervously at the water. And then a
diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Prather jumped
up excitedly. Even the policewoman was happy. When Gilleece called the wallet’s
owner, she burst out crying.
“Most people would have given the clip to police, and he chose to help me,”
Prather told CBS News. “I say thank you to him every day.”

Text 10
W: I was walking along Orchard Road when I found a tall young man wearing a jacket and a tie
was following me. I noticed him because not many people wear a jacket and a tie in the middle of
a hot summer day, and I had already seen this man four times that afternoon.
13
I was worried and decided to lose this strange man. When I saw a taxi coming, I jumped into it. As
I was telling the taxi driver where to go, I saw the man get into another taxi. As the two taxis
slowly made their way along Orchard Road, I looked back at the taxi behind and saw
the stranger was looking out at me. I got angry, so I got off and walked straight to him. I told him I
would call the police if he kept following me. He then told me that he was a journalist and he was
writing an article on how elderly people in Singapore spend their time. He said he was observing
me to gather materials for his article.

Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination to
be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性 别 歧 视 ) that shadowed her”
It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her.
But that only fueled her fire, and made her more resolved”(那是男人的世界,这让她很为难。
But by 1992, she was living on Social Security, staying at a
son’s Long Beach, in California, apartment, and two of her trumpets were in the pawnshop (典当
14
Bryant, a barrier breaker who stood firm in her determination
to be a respected jazz trumpet player despite the open sexism (性别歧视) that shadowed her, died
on August 25, in 2019, in Los Angeles, when she was 92. Life as a jazz trumpeter was an uphill
battle, said her son Darrin. “It was a man’s world, and that made it hard for her. But that only
fueled her fire, and made her more resolved.””(Bryant 虽然一辈子都被公然的性别歧视所困扰,
故选 A 项。
It was her father who encouraged her to do whatever she
wanted to do that made her stronger and stronger.”(正是她的父亲鼓励她去做任何她想做的事

通读全文,结合第一段中“Human responses to moral dilemmas (道德困境) can
be influenced by statements written by the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, according to a

故填 has studied/has been studying。
