三、阅读单选(本大题共15小题,每小题1分,共15分)
(A)
Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of seagrass with the aid of some unusual helpers: tiger sharks.
Seagrass usually grows in shallow waters. It grows in thick fields, known as meadows (草地). These seagrass meadows help clean the ocean’s water, and provide shelter for lots of sea life. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This harmful pollution is making global warming worse. Damaging these seagrass meadows will only further release (释放) this pollution back into the atmosphere.
Though they’re very important, scientists don’t have a good idea of the size and number of the world’s seagrass meadows. Trying to find these meadows from above the sea waters can be quite difficult. The world’s oceans are so large in size that it’s simply not possible to make a deep study of them by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research. These animals were chosen as research helpers because they spend a lot of their time in and around seagrass meadows.
Researchers attached cameras to the fins of seven tiger sharks. The sharks then carried the cameras and travelled for miles over the sea floor. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and then float back up to the surface. Tracking signals helped the scientists find the floating cameras and to collect the videos the sharks had taken.
The scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered, which could be as large as 92,000 square kilometres. The discovery means that the world has about 40 per cent more seagrass meadows than scientists had thought.
The project demonstrates (示范) a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us learn more about life under the sea. Animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t even know.

Recycling is very important for our environment. It helps to reduce waste and save natural resources. When we recycle, we take used materials and turn them into new products.
For example, paper can be recycled and made into new paper. This saves trees because fewer trees need to be cut down to make new paper. Plastic bottles can also be recycled. They can be made into new bottles or other plastic products.
Recycling also helps to reduce pollution. When we throw away waste, it often ends up in landfills or the ocean. This can cause a lot of problems for the environment and wildlife. By recycling, we can keep waste out of landfills and reduce the amount of pollution in the air and water.
In addition, recycling can create jobs. There are many people who work in recycling centers and factories. They collect, sort, and process recycled materials.

What do you like to wear on the weekend There’s a good chance that you like to put on a pair of blue jeans (牛仔裤). But according to a new study, our love for jeans may be bad for Earth, especially for sea animals.
In order to improve jeans’ feel and give jeans blue color, some man-made chemicals (化学品) are added to denim (牛仔布). Every time we wash our jeans, small bits of denim drop. They come out of our washing machine and into the world’s rivers, lakes and oceans. Scientists studied the Great Lakes in America and found denim waste in it. The harmful chemicals in denim have spread far and wide. They might be putting some sea animals in danger.
Scientists also washed jeans to see how many bits of denim each pair would drop for each wash. The answer was worrying: About 50,000 bits. Not all of them come into the environment. Wastewater treatment factories can deal with 99% of them. This may sound pretty good. However, the rest of them still have a bad influence on the environment.
Does this mean we shouldn’t wear jeans Probably not. “We need to buy fewer jeans and only wash them when we truly need to do it,” says Sam Athey, one of the scientists. “You don’t need to wash your jeans too often.”

① Do you usually see a wolf howling loudly at the Moon It’s cool. But wolves don’t actually do this.
② Instead, they mostly howl to “talk” with one another. Wolves usually live in packs, often made up of a father, a mother, and their young kids. Packs may also include aunts, uncle, and cousins. Each pack claims (要求) a territory — an area where members live and hunt.
③ Whether hanging around or on the move, the wolves often need to communicate. To connect over short distance, they may yip, growl, and whine. But to “keep in touch” over longer distanced, they howl.
④ Different howls send different messages. Some rally (召集) the pack before a hunt or meal. Others are used to warn the pack of danger. A wolf that gets separated from the group may howl to communicate that it's lost. Once the pack answers, the wolf will howl back to show where it is. Sometimes, wolves may even howl just for fun! Scientists believe that group howls—when one wolf starts, and the others join in — help the group build stronger connections. Think of it like a sing-along!
⑤ But wait — if wolves mostly howl to connect with one another, what made people start thinking that they howl at the Moon The idea may have sprung from folktales. Also, wolves often hunt at night and lift their snouts (口鼻部) toward the sky when howling. This may have led some people to believe that the creatures were directing their calls to the Moon. In reality, wolves raise their snouts because it helps the sound of their howls travel farther.
⑥ The Moon may not cause a wolf to howl. But wolf calls are still amazing. They allow packs to stick together, help make wolves safer, and may even deepen the pack’s connections. Now that’s something to howl about!
