Ⅴ.阅读理解
In ancient Greece,Athens and Sparta shared the same language and customs, but Spartans and Athenians led very different lives.
Growing up in Sparta meant learning to become a soldier. At seven, boys were sent to special schools. These schools wanted to make the boys brave soldiers. While the Spartan boys were learning discipline(纪律),boys in Athens learned reading, writing, and even music.
In Sparta,at the age of 20,boys finished training and became soldiers in the army.Even if a Spartan soldier got married,he could not live with his wife until he turned 30.He continued to serve in the military(军队) until he was 60 years old.Boys in Athens served in the army for two years only, from the ages of 18 to 20.After that, they could choose to be a soldier,or they could be an artist or a teacher.Family life was important to Athenians,so families lived together.
Both Sparta and Athens had an Assembly, which was a group of leaders who helped run the city. Also, both Spartans and Athenians chose the members of the Assembly. The Spartan Assembly, however, actually did not have very much power. There were two kings in Sparta. There were also the ephors—a group of five men who held most of the power. The people of Athens wanted the exact opposite. They believed that no one group of people should hold all the power. So they chose members of the Assembly every year.People voted on new laws, and they discussed lots of things.
Athenians and Spartans both believed that their way of life was the best. It’s no wonder that they finally went to war with one another.Sparta won the war,but the Spartan soldiers did not burn Athens. They let the culture of Athens live on.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
Tree leaves may be powerful tools for monitoring air quality and planning biking routes and walking paths, suggests a new study by scientists at Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Leaves along bus routes are up to 10 times more magnetic than leaves on quieter streets. That magnetism comes from tiny particles(微粒) of pollution that float through the air and either stick to leaves or grow right into them.
Geophysicist Bernie Housen and his colleague Luigi Jovane collected several leaves from 15 trees in and around Bellingham.Five of the trees lay next to busy bus routes.Five sat on parallel but much quieter side streets.Five were in a rural area nearby.
Using two measurement techniques,Housen and Jovane found that leaves along bus routes were between 2 and 8 times more magnetic than leaves from nearby streets and between 4 and 10 times more magnetic than rural leaves.
Breathing in particles of pollution has been linked to a number of negative health consequences, including breathing troubles and even heart problems.Tiny particles get deep into the lung tissues.
The new study suggests that biking or walking along heavy bus routes might be bad for your health. That’s something cities might want to consider as they plan new routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
While many details remain to be worked out,the study also suggests that collecting tree leaves can be a simple and effective way to measure the load of particles in the air.European researchers have been exploring the idea for a while.
“Using trees is a nice,low-tech way to do these studies and you don’t need to use expensive particle collectors,”Housen said.“If it works, you could easily collect a lot of data from a region. You could even have kids collect leaves.”

If you’re like most kids, you’ve probably made more than a few paper airplanes in your day.But how many kids can say their paper airplanes were life-size?At least one:12-year-old Arturo Veldenegro of Tucson,Arizona, who won the Pima Air & Space Museum’s first annual(一年一次的) Great Paper Airplane Project Fly-Off in March 2012.
“The purpose of the competition is to inspire(激发) and draw kids’ interest in science and flight(飞行),”says Tim Vimmerstedt, director of the museum.
About 150 kids entered the competition. The young designers(设计师) learned about how airplanes fly and then began to design their own airplanes.
Arturo designed and built his airplane. When he was finished,he took his airplane to the flight area and let it fly, outdistancing the other competitors in all age groups. At last,Arturo’s airplane flew the farthest—more than 75 feet!
As the winner,Arturo got to meet with a team of engineers, which took his design and made a bigger one.The new paper airplane might have been the largest one ever built!Arturo named his large paper airplane Arturo’s Desert Eagle.
Later a helicopter(直升机) tried to lift the paper airplane over the Airzona desert, but it was unsuccessful.Engineers worked for eight hours to repair it for a second try. This time, the helicopter managed to raise it to 2,700 feet and then set the airplane free.
Arturo watched as his airplane flew through the sky at speeds of up to 98 miles per hour for 10 seconds before falling to pieces.
“I felt happy but sad,”Arturo says.“It flew really well, but it was sad to see it destroyed.”
But that wasn’t the end of Arturo’s Desert Eagle. The Pima Air & Space Museum collected the pieces of the broken plane and put them on show to inspire other young engineers to reach for the sky.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
Ever since Bobby’s father passed away three years ago, the family of five had struggled. It wasn’t because his mother didn’t care, or try.She worked hard, but got only small salaries. However, what the family lacked in money and material things, they more than made up for in love and family unity.?
It was Christmas Eve already. All three of his sisters had already made beautiful gifts for their mother, but Bobby had nothing.
Wiping a tear from his eye, Bobby kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street where the shops and stores were.He walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.Everything seemed so beautiful and so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly he discovered a dime(十分硬币) in the road.
Never before has anyone felt so wealthy as Bobby felt at that moment. Then he held it and walked into the first store he saw.His excitement quickly turned cold when the salesperson told him that he couldn’t buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his ten-cent offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder and said to him, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.”
A few minutes later, there, before Bobby’s eyes, twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together beautifully.
“That will be ten cents, young man,” the shop owner said.Could this be true? No one else would give him a thing for his dime!
Sensing the boy’s look, the shop owner added, “I just happened to have some roses on sale for ten cents a dozen.Would you like them?”

Ⅲ.阅读理解
Today’s parents miss the golden age that their own mothers enjoyed in the 1970s and 1980s,researchers found.
Mothers have less time to themselves and feel under greater pressure to juggle work and family life than the previous generation. As a result,88 percent said they felt guilty about the lack of time they spent with their children.
The survey of 1,000 mothers also found that more than a third said they had less time to themselves than their mothers did—just three hours a week or 26 minutes a day.
And 64 percent said this was because they felt they had to go out to work, while nearly a third (29 percent) said they were under constant pressure to be the “perfect mother”,the report found.
Other findings showed social network and parenting website were important in providing help and support among female communities.
Kate Fox,of the Social Issues Research Centre, which conducted the survey for Procter & Gamble, said: “With increasing pressure on mothers to work a‘double shift’—to be the perfect mother as well as a wage-earner—support networks are more important than ever.”
It comes as a separate report examining childcare in the leading industrialized nations found that working mothers in Britain spend just 81 minutes a day caring for their children as a “primary activity”.
Critics (评论家) say the pressure on women to work long hours, and leave their children in the hands of nurseries or child minders,is putting the well-being of their children at risk.
The study also shows that,in spite of the fact that more and more modern mothers go out to work, the burden of childcare still falls on them—even if their husband is not in work.
A father who is not in work tends to spend just 63 minutes a day looking after his child—18 minutes less than a mother who goes out to work.
Working fathers spare less than three quarters of an hour with their children.

A.keep objects in the air
B.do many things at once
C.change things

Most spiders build webs to trap other insects. But the trap-door spider has another way of hunting.First, she digs a hole about ten inches deep and an inch and a half wide.Next, she makes a lid (盖子) of dirt and webbing. This trap door must fit in the upper end of the hole like a cover fits in a bottle. Finally, the spider hides her nest(洞穴) by spreading dirt over the lid. Then the trap door looks like the earth around it.Sometimes she even plants small green plants on top.She is as sly as a fox.
The trap-door spider hunts at night. For hours, she stays hidden right below her nest. She holds it open just a narrow space as she waits for insects.
When something comes near her door, she can sense the movements above her nest. She pushes the lid open quickly. But the trap door is so strong that she could be locked out.So she leaves her hind legs and a part of her body under the open lid. Then the spider grabs the surprised insect in her mouth.Down they go into her nest. The trap-door spider does not need a web.

About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa.I was just a little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders.
Lucy, a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn’t like me from the start. In fact, I was pretty sure she hated me.I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought I was a total fool.
My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term.Lucy was horrified (惊骇的).
I didn’t wear make-up (化妆品), and I didn’t wear those terrible bell-bottom pants.I didn’t exactly look like the coolest girl. But, I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she looked beautiful, even if she looked angry.
In the end, Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends. She started telling me how beautiful I looked.I still remember that the first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her thanks.Lucy invited me to her house for a party, and talked to me all the time instead of to her other friends.Lucy, the girl who hated me, called me her best friend. After that, we still were good friends a whole year later.
I may have moved to Arizona after that, but I will never forget Lucy. It’s funny—I still remember her birthday. She was a great friend. And to think, she considered me her enemy at first.Though it was hard, and it felt like I was wasting my time, and losing my dignity (尊严), I still smiled at Lucy when she made fun of me.I was not stupid, I didn’t think she was right in doing those things, but I still put up with her.And we became great friends.
About two weeks ago, I read a quote(引文)by Abraham Lincoln:“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?” Immediately, I smiled, thinking of Lucy. That quote just made me think of how great it was for me to change Lucy into my friend in that state of Iowa five years ago.
