①Earth Day was founded in 1970. It is a day to learn about nature and the planet. Today, Earth Day is celebrated around the world. It was created by Gaylord Nelson who hoped to raise the awareness (意识) of environmental protection.
②Gaylord Nelson wanted everyone to know that the planet was in danger. At that time, some college students were protesting (抗议) against the war. Nelson was inspired by these protests and dreamed of a large event about protecting the Earth. He thought it would make people care about the planet and take the problems seriously.
③Nelson shared that idea in 1969. He called on the whole country to take part. Letters and telephone calls came in from everywhere. He felt people really cared about what happened to the planet. Earth Day gave them a way to show it.
④Finally, the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. It raised the awareness of environmental problems. About eight months later, the Environmental Protection Agency was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment.
⑤Today, more than 1 billion people in over 140 countries have got involved. It is one of the largest events in the world. This shows Nelson’s idea worked! By teaching people and making them act, Earth Day helps everyone care about the planet. It makes us protect nature, just like Nelson wanted. Earth Day’s success proves that working together can make the world better.
