1. My alarm didn't go off so I woke up late.
go off (闹钟)发出响声
go off 在此处意为“(闹钟)发出响声”,是不及物动词短语。
I have set the alarm clock to go off at 7 a.m.
【拓展延伸】go off 的其他常见含义:
go off 离开He went off early this morning.
他非常匆忙地离开了。
He went off in a great hurry.
go off (食物、饮料)变质;变坏
Meat goes off easily in hot weather.
这杯牛奶变质了。
This cup of milk goes off.
go off (电灯)熄灭;(电)中断
Suddenly the lights went off.
如果房间里没人,灯会熄灭。
Lights will go off if no one is in the room.
2.I ran to the bus stop but I still missed the bus.
miss在此句中作及物动词,意为“错过”。
例:Be quick, or you will miss the early bus. 快点儿,否则你会错过早班车的。
miss作及物动词时,还可意为“怀念;思念”。
例:She will miss him when he leaves. 他走了以后,她会想念他的。
串记:
Mrs. White missed her son’s birthday party. She misses him very much.
怀特夫人错过了儿子的生日派对。她很想念他。
3.I was waiting for the bus when it began to rain heavily.
(1) begin意为“开始”,后接to do/ doing,可与start互换。
其过去式、过去分词和现在分词分别为began,begun, beginning。
begin的常见用法有:
begin to do sth. 开始做某事
他十二岁时,开始编写自己的书。
At the age of 12, he began to write his own book.
begin with 以……开始
聚会以一个游戏开始。The party began with a game.
to begin with 首先;起初
首先,你应该种下一颗种子。
To begin with, you should plant a small seed.
(2) heavily是形容词heavy的副词形式,意为“在很大程度上;大量地”,相当于hard。
雨下得很大。It was raining heavily.

In summer, lightning storms(闪电风暴)often happen. Some of us don’t take them seriously. In fact, they are very dangerous for people and they can even make people die at once. So how do we keep safe during a rainstorm
If you are indoors, stay away from windows and doors during a lightning storm. Don’t take a shower or do any dishes, because lightning can travel through water. Turn off the TV and computer. Never use the phone. Lightning can also travel through the phone line and hit you.
If you are outdoors during a lightning storm, never take shelter under a tree, because the lightning can hit the tall tree and travel through the tree to hit you. You should stay away from anything that is metal(金属). Try to get into your car and close all the windows or go into a building at once. If there is no building around, try to find a low place to stay in.
