Your bicycle just got stolen. These volunteers will get it back.
Mike Pavlik, once pretending to be a potential buyer, met a seller. Pavlik took note of the
bike's make, model and markings, confirming it was the one he was hunting. He asked to take it for
a test ride. The seller wanted some collateral (抵押物).
“Do I look like the kind of guy that steals bikes, dude ” Pavlik recalls asking the man. Then he
just pedaled off. An hour later, the seller texted him, “I guess you' re not coming back ” Pavlik says,
“I like screwing someone over who isn't expecting it and deserves it.”
Pavlik is part of an unusual army: amateur detectives who find stolen bikes and return them to
their owners. As bike theft becomes more profitable, grassroots efforts to hit thieves are springing
up nationwide. The volunteers say recovering bikes can be strangely fun and addictive.
Pavlik detects for Twin Cities Stolen Bikes, which has a Facebook page with 11,000members.
The volunteer group reunites owners with their wheels, often by tracking stolen bikes for sale on
Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up, Craigslist or eBay, and then confronting alleged thieves.
Similar efforts exist across the country. In New Orleans, Stolen Bikes NOLA has nearly6,000
Facebook followers and an online“success gallery.”
For Clark Thompson, a Stolen Bikes NOLA spokesman, a highlight is recovering someone's
$50 Walmart bike. “It's how they get to work, and lack of transportation leads to losing a job,” he
says. “So it's helping those folks where it really matters.”
Bike theft is big business, particularly with the arrival of costlier e-bikes. Close to 2million
bikes are stolen each year in North America, costing cyclists nearly $1 billion.
“It's been bananas lately,” says Bryan Hance, who helps run Bike Index, where cyclists can
register their bikes online for free and report them stolen. More than 16,000 stolen bikes were
reported last year, versus 11,000 in 2019. Hance says the thefts aren't high priority for police,
creating space for volunteers. Police say they take bike theft seriously, though manpower to tackle it
is a challenge. So it tends to get pushed to the back of the line. Hance says he got into this calling
because far too many bikes went missing — and because he realized it's fun.
24. Which is the best title of the passage
A. The Bike Theft B. Do A Fun Job
C. Get Your Bike Now D. The Bike Detectives
25. The bike theft is getting increasingly serious because it is .
A. difficult to track the stolen bike
B. impossible to register every bike
C. likely to make more money for the thief
D. careless of the owner not to lock the bike
26. What leads to the fact that the bike theft isn't high priority for police
A. The police's neglect. B. The shortage of the police.
C. The volunteers' participation. D. The low cost of bikes.
27. What do these detectives have in common
A. They all have a sense of justice.
B. They do the job voluntarily just for fun.
C. They will report the stolen bike in time.
D. They realized their dream of being a detective.

Online literature is believed to have first gained a significant foothold in the Chinese
mainland. Started domestically in the 1990s, Chinese online literature has been booming globally
over the past two decades. Whether it be online releases or physical book publications, works in
Mandarin only to be spontaneously translated by enthusiasts are a growing phenomenon.
The establishment of online reading platforms and the setup of overseas localization and
development ecosystems have led to Chinese online literature continuously expanding its global
influence. It is now described as one of the world's four major cultural phenomena, along withUS
Hollywood movies, Japanese animation and South Korean TV dramas.
Featuring magnificent imagination, fascinating plots and compelling stories, it is drawing a
growing mass of readers from all over the world. According to a report released by the
ChinaWriters Association last April, Chinese online literature has captivated nearly 200 million
active overseas users, 80 percent of whom are Generation Z readers— those born between the
mid-1990s and early 2000s — from most countries and regions worldwide. Another report
released by the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association in December revealed that
in 2023, China's online literature industry earned 4.35 billion yuan ( $597 million) from
international markets, up 7 percent year-on-year.
“The charm of Chinese online literature is boundless. It goes beyond the limitations of
traditional literature, breaking cultural barriers to resonate with readers around the world. As
someone from faraway Italy, I' ve found deep emotional connection and inspiration in these works.
Themes like the pursuit of dreams and the fight for justice are universal, uniting people across
cultures,” said Carlo Maria Rossi, a stage designer and multidisciplinary creative director from
Rome and a big fan of the popular Chinese web novel Lord of Mysteries.
Currently, Chinese online literature is crossing more boundaries and exploring a new path of
going global. With a focus on“global co-creation on intellectual property”, online literature writers
from different nations and regions are joining hands in fostering and developing their web novel IPs,
creating a new wave of the globalization of literature while promoting cultural understanding and
exchanges.
28. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Chinese literature is popular with Generation Z readers.
B. How Chinese literature influences other cultural phenomena.
C. Chinese online literature rises from local origins to global waves.
D. Why Chinese online literature promotes people's cultural exchanges.
29. Which contributes to the global expansion of Chinese online literature
A. The rapid spread of Mandarin.
B. The promotion of other cultural forms.
C. The long history of traditional literature.
D. The building of online reading platforms.
30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. The high cost of developing Chinese online literature overseas.
B. The limited growth potential of Chinese online literature in the future.
C. The dominance of Chinese online literature in the international market.
D. The increasing popularity and economic value of Chinese online literature.
31. What can be inferred from Carlo Maria Rossi's words
A. Lord of Mysteries is well-received in Italy.
B. Chinese online literature bridges cultural differences.
C. People can find more emotional links in Italian literature.
D. Italian literature has the same themes as Chinese online literature.

Not that long ago asking for an alcohol-free beer in a British pub made you seem weird.Less
so now. Alcohol consumption is falling among young, wealthy and health-conscious consumers.
Better brewing techniques have introduced tastier non-alcoholic options. Sales of alcohol-free beer
rose by 26% in 2022.
Even so, the overall market is still tiny. Non-alcoholic beverages make up a sliver ofBritain's
alcoholic drink market, at just 3%. That is comparable to the share in France andAmerica but far
behind that in Germany (16%) or Spain (11%). Sales growth of alcohol-free drinks would need to
exceed 40% each year to come close to raising their market share above10% by 2030.
Wider availability and better products will naturally help the market to grow. But so would
ironing out a specific wrinkle in the British market. According to standards set by theDepartment of
Health and Social Care, drinks must contain less than 0.05% alcohol by volume (abv) to be
considered alcohol-free. That is less than the alcohol content of burger rolls or ripe bananas. It is
also much less than in comparable markets. The 0.5% abv beers made by Big Drop, a British craft
brewer, are officially deemed non-alcoholic in America,Australia and Germany but not at home.
This strict standard has two consequences. One is for competition. Obeying the guidance is
hard for smaller brands in particular: producing drinks at 0.05% abv or less requires expensive
equipment to extract the alcohol. Some don't even bother trying. Nearly one-third of the drinks sold
and labeled as alcohol-free in Britain ignore the official guidance. That leads to the second
consequence: confusion. More than half of respondents in a poll by Opinium, a research firm, said
there was a lack of clarity over the suitability of non-alcoholic products for pregnant women,
drivers and people who don't drink for religious reasons.
The government, keen to give more options to people who drink to excess, has launched a
consultation on updating its rules so that drinks with 0.5% abv can legally claim the alcohol-free
descriptor. A labeling change is not going to make the market go crazy but it would bringBritain
into line with other countries. And it might make it even easier to order something non-alcoholic
next time you are at the bar.
32. Why are the figures mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To warn people. B. To attract the readers.
C. To prove the point. D. To make a proposal.
33. What can we learn about the non-alcoholic drink market in Britain
A. The overall non-alcoholic drink market is bigger than before.
B. The non-alcoholic drink market share will reach 10% by 2030.
C. France has a much bigger non-alcoholic drink market share than Britain.
D. The market growth merely depends on wider availability and better products.
34. What does the underlined“That” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Some small brands' disregarding the official guidance.
B. Lacking the clarity over the suitability on some people.
C. Considering the drink less than 0.05% abv to be alcohol-free.
D. Small brands' buying the expensive equipment to extract the alcohol.
35. What benefit will the consultation launched by the government bring
A. It will give alcoholic drinks legal status. B. It will help the market grow dramatically.
C. It will leave you lost for what to order in a bar.
D. It will make Britain keep pace with other countries.

It was time for summer camp. Amy was excited to make new friends. She shared a dormitory
with Angela, Jessica and Sharon. Among her classmates, Jessica was the most dynamic. She
actively participated in all kinds of activities and encouraged the others to try out new adventures.
Her laughter was contagious and in no time the four of them were having a blast together.
After a fulfilling day full of fun activities, the girls satisfied their appetite at the cafeteria. Then,
quickly getting washed up, they were ready to turn in. Jessica said goodnight to her roommates. In
less than a minute she was snoring(打鼾). Her snoring was not gentle, but like a sharp whistle
piercing through the quietness. The girls were startled at first. They had never heard such a horrible
noise in their bedroom. What's worse, there was no rhythm to the snoring. It would stop for a while,
then coming back all of a sudden just as the other girls were about to fall asleep.
“Jessica, could you...” “Jessie, we can't sleep with you snoring like that.” The girls cautiously
requested. When they realized it was no use, they tried to wake her up by shoving her and raising
their voice at her. It only worked briefly, but the snoring always came back. The next morning, the
exhausted girls were amazed to see Jessica running around energetically just like the previous day.
The snoring occurred again at sleep time. On the third night, they knew they had to deal with it.
