My daughters are lovely and attractive. The 4 year old has big blue eyes and always wears a smile. The 7 year old’s long strawberry blond hair and sweet smile are already turning the boys’ heads. I love everything about these girls, and they know it.
But I try not to tell them they’re beautiful. My young daughters are totally innocent when it comes to the pressures of being a woman in our society. They know nothing about plastic surgery, diets, “feeling fat” models or eating disorders. We adults know all too much about such things and in the face of this distorted (扭曲的) reality we tend to start telling our girls, as soon and often as possible, how beautiful they are.
I know this is wonderfully well-intentioned, and that we want to raise our girls’ confidence from the very start. Here’s the thing, though. We might think we’re building our daughters up by telling them that they are beautiful to us no matter what, but what we’re also doing is bringing the beauty pressure home to our littlest girls. The more I talk about beauty and looks, even in a positive way, the more I’m conveying the importance of those things.
However, it doesn’t mean I don’t praise my girls. Instead of saying “You look beautiful!”, I might say the more specific “Don’t you look fancy today!” or “Those colors go so well together.” It means that I treat my daughters not as my little dolls, but as real people who are developing their own sense of self and style. It means that they are in charge of how they look.
Naturally, I buy most of my girls’ clothes. But I don’t usually manage their outfit choices. My daughters can go girly with necklaces, or they can choose to give up dresses altogether. Of course we’ve seen some mismatching, but they own those styles. They never ask if they look pretty, and they walk with easy confidence that has nothing to do with what I or anyone else will say about how they look. And that’s the spirit I want them to take into their teens and adulthood.
24. What do the author’s two daughters have in common
A. Both like to smile. B. Both have blond hair.
C. Both like strawberries. D. Both have big blue eyes.
25. Why is the author unwilling to tell her girls that they are beautiful
A. She expects them to face reality. B. She wants them to find it themselves.
C. She wants them to focus less on looks. D. She doesn’t think they can understand it.
26. How does the author treat her daughters
A. She avoids praising them.
B. She treats them as her little dolls.
C. She is particular about their clothes.
D. She pays attention to their unique styles.
27. What can be learned about the author’s daughters
A. They are highly dependent.
B. They are really confident.
C. They tend to take advice from their mother.
D. They have a good taste in dressing themselves.

Rising sea levels and the potential impacts on huge coastal populations worldwide rank near the top of concerns when it comes to consequences of a worsening climate emergency. But a lesser-known danger poses an equal or arguably more urgent threat to millions around the world living at much higher altitudes (海拔): flooding from glacial lakes.
With average temperatures rising around the world in recent decades, a number of these lakes high above population centers in South America and Asia have become swollen (涨水的) and unstable as the reserves of snow and ice that feed them melt ever quicker.
For the first time, an international team of researchers has quantified this threat. It reports that 15 million people are in the path of potential floods from these swollen bodies of water. “Understanding which areas face the greatest danger from glacial flooding will allow for more targeted and effective risk management actions, which in turn will help minimize loss of life and damage to infrastructure (基础设施) downstream,” said co-author Rachel Carr, head of physical geography at Newcastle University.
In 1941, a glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, from Lake Palcacocha killed thousands in the town of Huaraz below and largely inspired the beginning of research into the phenomenon. Dams and other infrastructure were put in place to relieve the threat from the lake in the 1970s, but its volume is now over 30 times greater, requiring new improvements to safely drain and release water pressure.
Lead researcher Caroline Taylor says the researchers also found that understanding the danger requires more than just counting lakes and measuring their volume. “Instead, it is the number of people, their distance to a glacial lake and importantly, their ability to cope with a flood that determines the potential danger from a GLOF event.”
In recent years, a warning system was set up at Lake Palcacocha that could give residents of Huaraz enough time to get out of the way of an incoming flood. Meanwhile, other threatened villages with no such alert system continue to rely on hope and luck.
28. Why does the author mention rising sea levels in the first paragraph
A.To make a comparison. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To provide an example. D.To support his argument.
29. What can we learn about GLOF from the passage
A.An international team first figured out the dangerous areas.
B.Effective risk management will rid people of the danger.
C.A GLOF in the 1970s determined the start of study into the danger.
D.Threatened villagers without warning systems can easily get hurt.
30. Which factor decides the potential danger according to Caroline Taylor
A.The number of the unstable lakes.
B.The volume of the unstable lakes.
C.The coping ability of the potential victims
D.The degree of climate change.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Glacial Lakes: a Potential Danger B.GLOF: an Overlooked Threat
C.Climate Change: the Cause of GLOF D.Warning Systems: a Solution to GLOF

“Palace, Mountain, Moon ” has been selected by NASA as the Astronomical Picture of the Day for December 25, 2023.
The photo was taken by Valerio, a young photographer of Turin, Italy. It was taken on the evening of December 15, 2023. Though he knew about NASA’s competition, he hadn’t considered participating until receiving much encouragement from his social media followers. Soon after, he received the message, “Your image has been chosen as the astronomical photo of the day.” It was incredible!
In a photo like this, nothing is left to luck. The concept came to him back in 2017. Walking on the hills north of Turin, he found several spots perfect for including both the Basilica of Superga Palace and Mountain Monviso. After numerous visits over several months, he identified four spots where Superga and Monviso line up just right.
After pinpointing these locations, he experimented with shooting them at different times. “I knew I needed something special to perfect the photo. The Sun was a no-go, so I turned to the Moon. Its various phases and positions reach an azimuth angle (方位角) of 230 degrees,” Valerio said. With this in mind, he researched the Moon’s phases, marked potential dates on the calendar, and planned the exact moments when the moon could join the queue.
It was very successful, especially because the Moon was in a waxing phase (月盈期). This meant that in the photo, not only was its crescent (新月) lit up, but so was the left part, its shadowed side. That part is lit by reflected light, also known as Da Vinci’s glow (达芬奇灰光),named after him because he was the one who theorized about why the Moon’s shadowed side is brightened. During the early days of the waxing Moon phases, the shadowed part is visible because the Sun’s light reflects off the Earth and hits the Moon’s shadowed side, giving it a greyish, silvery color. This allowed the light to outline Monviso on the left as well.
32. Why did Valerio send the photo to NASA
A. He took an interest in astronomical advances.
B. He expected to create an impact on social media.
C. He received broad support from enthusiastic fans.
D. He wished to make his hometown a tourist hot spot.
33. In Valerio’s photo, the three objects ______.
A. shine light on each other B. stand in a straight line
C. fit each other in size D. vary from usual in color
34. What did Valerio do to prepare for the perfect photo
A. Studying how the Moon phase changes.
B. Calculating the Superga-Monviso distance.
C. Analyzing when to adjust the camera angle.
D. Measuring the height of the observation point.
35. What was lit up by the Da Vinci’s glow
A. The outline of the crescent. B. The outline of Superga.
C. The dark side of the Moon. D. The shadowed side of the Earth.

Wildlife workers in Florida are feeding manatees (海牛) to keep them from starving. 36 So far, the rescue workers have already given out 25 tons of lettuce.
Manatees are huge sea mammals that can be as long as 4 meters when grown. 37 In spite of their size, manatees only eat plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. They spend most of their time in warm shallow water looking for food.
But Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals since 1967. Most threats to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the creatures are boats. 38 Manatees are curious and fairly slow, which has led to thousands of manatees being injured or killed.
39 At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. But by 2016, there were roughly 8,800 manatees.
But now manatees are facing a new challenge: they can’t get enough to eat. Many of the beds of sea grass that manatees depend upon have been killed by human caused pollution. Sea grass began to disappear around 2011. Warming seas, combined with polluted water and fertilizers that have washed off of farmlands, have created huge growths of algae on the ocean’s surface.
Last year, 1,101 manatees died from starving. 40 Many of the manatees that remain are so thin that their ribs can be seen. Often they have trouble swimming.
So last December, wildlife experts came up with a plan to get emergency food to the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage. Long term, Florida is working to help restore sea grass beds. But that will take time.
A. That was a record.
B. They can weigh up to 590 kilograms.
C. The feeding station has been very successful.
D. With protection, manatees managed to bounce back.
E. It blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass to grow.
F. But feeding these massive sea creatures takes a lot of food.
G. Research needs to be done to determine what food would be best.

Good morning! My name is Li Hua, and I am honored to deliver a speech on water conservation as World Water Day approaches.
Water is essential for life, supporting ecosystems, agriculture, and human health. Its access is crucial for community development and economic stability. However, we face significant challenges, such as severe droughts and pollution, which threaten our freshwater supplies and make it difficult for us to get clean water.
Thus, I call on you to join the effort to conserve water. First, adopting simple habits like shortening showers and fixing leaks can greatly reduce our consumption. Moreover, you can participate in local clean-up initiatives or educational workshops. Finally, we must advocate for government policies that promote responsible water management and support sustainable practices.
Every drop counts. By working together, we can make a difference! Thanks for listening.
