Every day as the sun rises, Ma Hongyi, a 66-year-old farmer, can be seen patrolling (巡逻)Yuncheng Salt Lake with his dog in Yuncheng city, North China’s Shanxi province.
Ma still remembers the day when he first saw two big pink birds wandering through the water. “I had never seen such pretty birds. They were even taller than me, with long wings,” Ma recalls. He was later told that the birds were flamingos, a rare sight in China, which were listed on the International Union for Protection of Nature’s red list of endangered species in 2013. From that day on, Ma started his second career as a volunteer to prevent human beings from interfering with the wildlife. “The birds are attracted by the good environment,” Ma says. “I will do my best to protect the lake so that birds can come here every year.”
Yuncheng Salt Lake covers an area of 132 square kilometers and used to serve as a salt production base. As the country began attaching greater importance to environmental protection, an ecological(生态的)protection and development center was set up in 2012 to carry out regular ecological protection and restoration(修复) of the lake. “The greatest value of the Salt Lake lies in its ecology, which should be properly restored and protected,” says Chu Xianghao, mayor of the city. The lake area hosts 292 types of wild animals, along with 782 plant varieties, some of which are newly recorded species in the country.
After patrolling the lake as volunteer for over four years, Ma was employed by the local government to help with wildlife protection in 2019. “The lake’s ecology is getting better,” Ma says, adding that he looks forward to the arrival of the flamingos every year. “Some of them are my old friends”, he says.

Millions of people around the world, including nearly 60% of Americans, Australians and Europeans, participate in sports.
Lack of physical activity is estimated to cause more than 5 million early deaths a year. To reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), cancer and a number of other diseases, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adults and older people engage in physical activity for at least 150 minutes a week. Adults participating in a high overall level of sports and exercise are at 34% lower risk of death than those who never or rarely engage in such activities.
But does it make a difference which physical activities we do
To strengthen the evidence on health benefits of six common sport disciplines—aerobics (有氧运动), cycling, football, racquet (球拍) sports, running and swimming --we recently analyzed data from 80,306 British adults. The study found 27%, 15%, 47% and 28% reduced risk of death for participants in aerobics, cycling, racquet sports and swimming.
Although we observed reductions in the risk of death associated with football and running (18% and 13%) in our study sample, the data did not allow us to draw conclusions about these effects across the whole population. These associations should not be misunderstood as “no association” or “evidence of no effect”. We simply do not know whether the observed effects in the sample occurred by chance alone or reflect the true effects in the population.
It may take decades until we reach definite conclusions about health outcomes of all types of sports. Should you in the meantime sit in front of the TV and wait for researchers to announce the final results No! Follow your preferences and select an affordable and easily accessible sporting activity you enjoy doing, while trying to reduce the risk of injury.

B. Running is the best form of exercise.
C. Racquet sports are the most effective in reducing the risk of death.
D. Aerobics is more popular than running.
30. What does the author advise us to do in the end
A. Participate in racquet sports. B. Choose whatever sport you like.
C. Participate in running and swimming. D. Choose whatever sport that’s beneficial.
31.What would be the best title for the text
A. The Benefits of Playing Sports B. Different People, Different Sports
C. Which Sports Are Best for Health D. Why Do People Engage in Sports
D
Have you ever had a food that you tasted and you immediately disliked Maybe it was broccoli, dark chocolate, or cottage cheese. Maybe you were “encouraged” to try the food again, and then one of those times you actually liked it. Many people have had this experience. While tastes are developed at a young age, they can be changed, which depends on a person’s desire to try.
Researchers at the University of Birmingham released a study that showed people have a flavor window. The flavor window is open for four-to-six-month-old babies. During this time, it is easier to get babies to try a food they have not previously tasted. As they grow up, the flavor window slowly closes, leaving most of them dubious of new foods.
However, the flavor window closing at a young age doesn’t mean it can’t be reopened. A study found that if babies are introduced to a new food 5 to 10 times, they can grow to like it. That amount goes up as children grow older. Ultimately, the study came to the conclusion that the flavor window may never be completely shut.
Being willing to try a new food repeatedly is necessary to open a person’s flavor window again. Each attempt will lessen the natural unwillingness of something new. Eventually, “not bad” can turn into “pretty good”. One method for inspiring courage to try new foods multiple times is testing different ingredients. Adding an ingredient-sugar or salt, perhaps-that one enjoys, might make an unappealing food more appealing. Once the person has trained him or herself to like the food, the added ingredient may not be necessary.
Overcoming a dislike of a particular food requires tasting a food in different ways and at different times. In spite of strange smells, odd textures, or distinctive flavors, a person has the ability to acquire a true liking for even the most unique and unusual foods. So don’t give up-you never know when you might surprise yourself and discover that broccoli is your new favorite food!
32. What does the study find about babies
A. Babies are naturally unwilling to try new foods.
B. Babies develop a favorite food if they eat that food many times.
C. Babies are more likely to accept new foods when the flavor window is open.
D. Babies who are not exposed to new foods will experience a narrow flavor window.
33. What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean
A. Greedy. B. Doubtful. C. Impatient. D. Bored.
34. Why does the author include paragraph 4 in the text
A. To explain how adding sugar or salt improves the taste of foods
B. To highlight that there is no reason why people stop trying new foods.
C. To warn that people may have difficulty preparing new foods properly.
D. To suggest that people can expand their flavor preferences with time and effort.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Don’t give up on broccoli. B. Try new foods before it is too late.
C. Ways to reopen your flavor window. D. A new study about your eating habits.

There was a girl in my class named Krista. Krista didn’t like me. In fact, I thought she hated me. I was always the smallest in the class and maybe that made me easy to pick on. She would say, “Little girl, no one likes you, little girl!” She even punched me in the arm and I cried a lot in the bathroom. Finally one day, I decided to face the bullying (霸凌) . So right as the bell was about to ring, I went up to Krista, kicked her in the leg, and then ran as fast as I could. I was safe with the teacher in the classroom, but Krista beamed an evil look and said, “Be scared. I’ll get you later.”
I worked hard at avoiding her the rest of the year. I remembered telling my mom about it, and she comforted me by saying “Nobody can tell you how little you are—you decide how big you will be.” I really liked that saying. I would say it in my head often and find strength in these words. But the thought of Krista’s bullying didn’t die in my mind.
One day, I received a letter about my coming-of-age ceremony, the biggest day of my youth. Then I read who my partner would be. KRISTA. How could this be She was the source of all my anxiety and insecurity and yet this day was supposed to show my strength, pride, and wisdom.
When the day came, Krista and I both acted civil. I could tell she wasn’t pleased either. When I read my speech, I read loudly and confidently. I had practiced long and hard. I saw my friends and family smiling at me, and I focused just on them.
Then it was Krista’s turn. She was shaking. I was shocked at how nervous and scared the bully seemed. I suddenly felt something that I never imagined feeling toward Krista—sympathy. I had always dreamed of the day I could laugh in her face and make her feel as little as she made me feel. But now, I didn’t want to do it anymore.
I sat down next to the crying girl after the ceremony, as her hands remained over her eyes.

第一节 应用文
Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen,
It's generally accepted that forest has the functions of cooling off global temperature, refreshing the air, preserving soil and water, protecting the nature links and so on. Ihe forest is also the key to solving the severe environmental problems.
We should do something to protect the fo@rest.First, stop cutting down the forest blindly. If we really have to, plant more trees. Second, the government should do something to enhance people's awareness of forest protection. Last but not the least, we can reduce the use of paper.
To protect the forest is to protect ourselves. Without the forest, we could not live on the earth either.
Thank you for your listening!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写
Paragraph 1:
I sat down next to the crying girl after the ceremony, as her hands remained over her eyes. I couldn't help putting my hand on her shoulder and told her that everything would be fine. She murmured,"I always envy you having so many friends and supportive family." Despite the hurtful things she had done to me, I realized that she might also have her own struggles. She could barely look me in the eye, and then she whispered,"Thank you. I was never nice to you... I'm...sorry."
Paragraph 2:
I smiled and gave her my forgiveness. Though her words caught me off guard, I could see the guilt and sincerity in her eyes. It was a moment of realization for both of us, as we began to see each other in a different light. I told her what my mom had told me the year before,"Nobody can tell you how little you are-you decide how big you will be." Hopefully, those words would give her the strength that they gave to me. I truly believe I became an adult that day.
