A new study warns that more than a fifth of all reptile (爬行动物)species are threatened with extinction, which may have a bad impact on the planet.
The largest ever analysis of the state of theworld's reptiles, published in Nature, has showed that21% of the reptile species are facing extinction. The study says from lizards to snakes, such a loss could have disastrous impacts on ecosystems around the world.
Although many reptiles live in dry environments such as deserts, most species occur in forests, where they suffer from threats such as logging of land for agriculture.30% of the forest-dwelling reptiles are at risk of extinction, compared with 14% in dry habitats. Hunting is also a major threat to reptiles, especially turtles and crocodiles, many of which are at risk of extinction. Another major contributing factor is the introduction of invasive species.
"If we removed reptiles, it could changeecosystems fundamentally, with unfortunate knock-on effects(连锁反应), such as increases in pest insects,”said Neil Cox, co-leader of the study.“Biodiversity, including reptiles, supports the ecosystem services that provide a healthy environment for people.”
Our hope is that this first-ever assessment of the world's 10,000-plus reptiles helps put them in the spotlight and goes some way to(在一定程度上) highlighting thisdiversity, and just how much we have to lose. As well as controlling rats, mosquitoes and other pests, reptiles deliver many other benefits. “They helpspread seeds, especially in island environments, " said researcher Hoffmann.“We've also achieved many medical advances from studies of reptiles.”
The results of the study are not all doom andgloom. Scientists have found, surprisingly, that if they set out to protect places where threatened birds, mammals and amphibians (两栖动物) live together, they'll meanwhile protect many more threatened reptiles.
28. Which is the main concern raised by the new study
A. The overpopulation of reptiles. B. The loss of reptiles.
C. The sharp increase in reptile species. D. The disastrous influence of reptiles onnature.
29. How many factors causing the extinction of species are mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D.Four.
30. What did Neil Cox and Hoffmann bothsay about reptiles
A. Their benefits. B. Their habitats.
C. Their living habits.D. Their health problems.
31. What does the underlined phrase“doom and gloom” in the last paragraph mean
A. Disappointing B.Odd. C.Satisfactory. D. Amazing.
D
The commonly held belief that it takes 21 days to form a new habit can be dated back to a1960 book by plastic(人造的) surgeon Maxwell Maltzcalled Psycho-Cybernetics. In his work treating patients who had gone through facial recognition surgery,Maltz noticed that it typically took around three weeks for them to adapt to seeing their new faces in the mirror. He also found that individuals who had lost a limb(肢;臂) still sensed “phantom(幻觉的)”pains in the missing arm or leg for about 21 days.
Based on these conceptions(观念;想法)of recovery time after significant physical changes, Maltz theorized(提出理论) in his book that it likely takes a minimum of 21 days for the neurological pathways in our brains related with old behaviors and habits to go away, and for new mental images and routines to take firm root. This idea of a standardized 21-day formation period for habits soon became widely accepted.
However, Maltz was drawing casual inferences(推断) rather than conducting strict scientific research. It was not until 2010 that health psychologist Phillipa Lally at University College London decided to properly study habit formation timelines. She designed a year-long experiment that tracked 96 participants as they each established a single new habit of their choosing. Every day, subjects(受试者) reported on whether they successfully performed their intended behaviour that day as well as how automatic the action felt.
Lally's findings showed that on average, it took 66 days before a habit became a normal part of a routine and felt automatic. But results varied widely, with habits forming anywhere from 18 days up to 254 days between individuals. Consistency(连贯性) was the key factor in successfully making a behaviour habitual, with sometimes missing days not stopping the whole progress.
This study proved the assumed 21-day standard to be false and showed that a wide range of timelines are normal.
32. What is Maltz’s assumption based on
A. Carefully designed survey. B. Psychological work.
C.His personal observations. D. The strict scientific research.
33. Why did Lally's team conduct the research
A.To support Maltz's theory on habit formation.
B.To identify timelines for establishing new habits.
C. To explore the factors in affecting habit formation.
D. To explain advantages of developing good behaviour.
34. What do we know about Lally's findings
A. There are large individual differences in forming habits.
B.Most participants took 66 days to make a behaviour habitual.
C. It is harder to form a new habit than to stick to an old one.
D. Occasional stops have a big effect on the progress of habit formation.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce ways to establish a new habit.
B. To compare different studies of habit formation.
C. To correct a misconception about habit formation.
D. To involve readers in a 21-day habit formation activity.

Are you afraid of failure However, only by overcoming fear of failure can we achieve success in life. Here are some tips on how to remove fear and focus on success:
Understand that at times you make mistakes. 36Before any of us learned how to walk, we crawled(爬行).We got up,fell down and got up again. We continued the process until we could walk quite well.
37 Instead, view it as a stepping stone. Make certain that you learn from failure and then use what you have learned in future situations. Refuse to consider failure a character weakness. Doing so will only prevent you from achieving future success.
Remember that failure has produced many successes. 38Albert Einstein's teacher told him to quit school and said,“Einstein, you will never achieve anything!” Beethoven's music teacher said he was hopeless to become a composer. Henry Ford's first two car companies failed.
Appreciate the benefits of failure. A famous writer said,“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you try, thebetter you make.” It's hardly possible for someone to achieve success for the first time he tries. 39
Believe in yourself. Rather than give up when things don't work out,see it as a chance to build perseverance(坚持不懈). Remind yourself how many failures became successful because they wouldn't give up. 40
A. Don't take failure personally.
B. Work hard and try to avoid failure.
C. Realize that you are human and humansmake mistakes.
D. Believe that you've got what it takes towork through the difficult times.
E. Making the same mistake again can leadto the failure in your future work.
F. Consider how many people in historyhad failed before they became successful.
G. In other words, your chances of getting things right on the first try are little.

The bird flapped (振翅) around and let out another cry. She hated being inside that box. But Jacob had to put her there to take her to the mountaintop and release her. The wind blew harder,
icy - cold in their faces.
"That's a strong wind," said Rex,"Are you sure that pigeon can fly in this "
"Blanche isn't a pigeon," Jacob shouted .
Rex laughed," Oh yeah, that's right . A seagull(海鸥). One of those little things that hop by the sea." His jokes continued, but Jacob ignored him, recalling the day he found Blanche on the shore. She hardly had any feathers(羽毛) and her eyes were almost completely shut. But Jacob touched her and she moved a little bit. So Jacob took her home.
Then he faced a new challenge: What to feed the baby bird Jacob headed to the library and came across a book with a picture of a man feeding a baby bird milk. Willing to try anything, he gave it a try ...
All the way, Rex made one comment after another. Always the same thing." That silly bird can't fly. She ' s lucky to be alive." But Jacob remained firm in his belief. Now, with the box in hand, he felt a wave of determination. He believed she could fly.
"So, what's the plan " Rex asked, a touch of doubt in his voice." Just throw her off the top " Jacob ignored the doubt in Rex's tone, his focus only on Blanche and her approaching flight.
"I'll help her," Jacob replied." I've been training her for two weeks."
"Alright, alright, let's do this," Rex urged(催促) impatiently." It's freezing."
Jacob placed the box on the grass and bent down to open it.

It has a slow tempo(速度;拍子) and clear pronunciation, making it easier for you to convey the emotions behind the lyrics.

参考范文:
"Come on , girl ! Out you go," Jacob encouraged the bird ." Saying your goodbyes " Rex teased(嘲笑), a grin(露齿笑;咧嘴笑) spreading across his lips." Come on, girl ! Go get your freedom !" Jacob urged , ignoring Rex ' s irony(讽刺的), eyes sparkling with hope. But the seagull only stretched her head out at awkward angles, hesitant and unsure. Jacob then lifted the box higher, giving her a full view of the vast expanse(宽敞的空间) that lay ahead. She let out a cry, yet dared not venture forth(冒险出发)." You can do it !" he whispered again, voice steady and reassuring(令人安心的;令人感到宽慰的). But the box seemed impossibly heavy in his hands, burdened(负担着;背负着) by the invisible(看不见的) load of her fear.
Jacob was about to give up when he felt a sudden lightness in his hands.A smile lit up his face as he realized Blanche was finally taking the plunge(决定奋力一搏;决定冒险一试). Her wings flapped around awkwardly, with no grace at all, but she persevered(坚持). She flew ahead, straight to the edge of the cliff(悬崖). Jacob watched in horror as her small body dropped out of view, his heart pounding in his chest. The world seemed to fall silent, and so did Rex. They watched, breathless, as she vanished(消失). Jacob and Rex exchanged glances, their faces beaming with joy and relief as the seagull soared(高飞;翱翔) freely and gracefully in the chilly wind.

Yours,
Li Hua
