Unit 5
Our neighbourhood
To understand the story of "the six-foot lane".
To learn about sayings related to neighbours, translate them and discuss how to be good neighbours.
学习目标
1 Read the story and number the sentences.
In the Qing Dynasty, there was a famous family in Tongcheng, Anhui — the Zhang family. Zhang Ying was a Daxueshi in Beijing. He held great power.
The Zhangs’ house neighboured on the Wus’. There was a narrow lane between the two houses. The Wus planned to build their house and take up this lane. The Zhangs wrote a letter to Zhang Ying. They asked Zhang Ying to deal with this problem. Zhang Ying wrote back a few lines. He asked his family to give away their three feet of land to their neighbour.
The Wu family felt ashamed. They also gave their three feet away. This is why there is now the historic six-foot lane.
