In the town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland is a curious little shop where not everything is as it seems. From crispy pies to shining jellies and soft ice cream, the shop is filled with delicious-looking food—none of it is eatable. Created by award-winning sculptor and fake food artist Kerry Samantha Boyes, the Fake Food Workshop is a place to enjoy the art of food without consuming a single calorie.
Kerry, who crafts each food product available at the shop, isn’t your usual chef. The ingredients she uses include materials like materials like resin, clay and foam. Sometimes, real food is used to make silicone molds (硅胶模具), from which a fake copy is created and then painted to look lifelike.
But Kerry’s talent for creating fake food didn’t begin in the kitchen. Having trained in sculpture at university, Kerry worked in stone carving before later training in taxidermy -the art of stuffing animals for display. Kerry says her training in taxidermy helped her understand animal anatomy (解剖), which is useful when building something like a cooked goose or a roast pig for a display.
Some of Kerry’s work involves recreating historical food, which she creates for museums and organizations like English Heritage and the UK’s National Trust. However, some of her more modern projects have included making lake ice cream for the movie 2023 Barbie, and a jelly with a gun inside it for the Netflix series The Gentlemen.
“Sometimes the most difficult things to make are the simple things,” she told us. “For instance, a cucumber sandwich. The bread needs to look light and bouncy (有弹性的). The cream cheese needs to be smooth and creamy, and the cucumbers should look fresh.”
Working out how to put different textures (质地) together is often one of Kerry’s biggest challenges. But she says it’s challenges like these that make the job fun!
24. What is the feature of the food in the shop
A. They are vivid. B. They taste great.
C. They include all varieties. D. They come from a famous chef.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3

It’s often said that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. It’s true, and after arguments with siblings (兄弟姐妹) over the holidays, it might feel truer than ever!
But sibling bonds (纽带) can last for life and may even help to keep our brains healthy. At least, that’s according to a new study by researchers in the US. They wanted to find out whether having good relationships with siblings during childhood can have an influence on our health later in life.
The research team used long-term data taken from a project that began in 1957. It followed 10,000 US high school graduates and their siblings. Participants were also asked to look back on their childhood and sibling relationships through surveys done in more recent years, and researchers assessed the cognitive (认知的) abilities of some of the older adults through telephone interviews.
Researchers asked people about their experiences with their siblings as children and as they got older. They focused on positive interactions like hugging and helping one another and negative ones like conflicting. They also looked at the stability of the participants’ families during childhood. Later in life, people were asked how often they stayed in contact with their siblings and how close they felt to one another.
The study found that those who got along well with their siblings as children were more likely to stay in close contact with them as they got older. However, those who weren’t so close to their siblings during childhood often also managed to maintain lasting relationships with them during adulthood.
It was those who grew up in a challenging home environment who were found to be less likely to maintain contact with their siblings later in life. And this is important, because the study also found that people who had frequent contact with their siblings in their 50s, 60s and 70s had better cognitive health in their 80s.
28. How does the writer start the text
A. By listing facts. B. By telling stories.
C. By quoting theories. D. By giving definition.
29. Why did researchers have participants recall childhood sibling relationships
A. To check participants memory accuracy.
B. To find out participants’ recent social status.
C. To assess cognitive abilities in childhood.
D. To understand long-term impacts of early relationships.
30. According to the passage, which adults have better cognitive health
A. Those who have more siblings.
B. Those who live near their siblings.
C. Those who keep more touch with their siblings.
D. Those who seldom have conflict with their siblings.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. Siblings Share Similar Brain Health
B. People Should Be Close to Their Siblings
C. A Home Environment May Affect Brain Health
D. Good Sibling Relationships May Keep Brain Healthy
D
It’s been long established that a feature of human intelligence is the ability to plan multiple steps into the future. And chess grandmasters are frequently perceived as the park of forward thinking. However, is it possible for others to learn to think further ahead with a reasonable amount of practice
To explore this, a group of scientists developed a computational model that reveals our ability to plan for future events. The research, conducted by scientists in New York University’s Center for Neural Science and reported in the journal Nature, centers on the role of “planning depth”--the number of steps that an individual thinks ahead--in decision-making.
The Nature paper’s authors had people play a relatively simple game--a more complicated version of tic-tac-toe---that still required players to plan deeply. Then, to understand precisely what goes on in people’s minds as they are thinking of their next move in this game, the authors designed a computer model based on AI principles. The model allows them to describe and later predict the moves that people make when faced with new situations in the game.
To validate the model, the researchers conducted a series of behavioral experiments with human participants. Overall, their results showed that better planning is driven by the ability to recognize patterns more accurately and in less time—outcomes that point to the benefits of practice and experience.
“It is known that planning abilities can improve in adulthood through practice,” said Weiji Ma, a professor of neuroscience (神经学) and psychology at NYU and the paper’s senior author. “These findings show that even a relatively modest amount of practice can improve one’s depth of planning. This opens up new avenues (途径) of research. For example, we can use these methods to study the development of planning abilities in children, or test whether planning abilities can be kept in old age. Of course, it is also crucial that we connect planning in the laboratory to planning in real life.”
32. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The focus of the research. B. The principle of the research.
C. The purpose of the research. D. The limitation of the research.
33. Why was the game tic-tac-toe chosen
A. It is popular with people. B. It is easy to be monitored.

A. To think something is good.
B. To officially accept something.
C. To prove something is true or correct.
D. To believe something is better than others.

Whether you live to work or you work to live, having a healthy work-life balance is good for both you and your employer. 36
Plan: It can help to plan your time, making sure to include leisure time in those plans, say Allaya Cooks-Campbell from job coaching website Better Up. 37 It will give you a bit of time to switch off. If you’re able to, you could also plan to take short breaks during the day, and perhaps even use them to take a walk or read a few pages of a book.
Engage in personal hobbies, Many people define who they are by what they do for work. But it is also just as important to have personal interests and hobbies. 38 For example, if you love reading, schedule specific times for your favorite books. If you have always enjoyed fishing, go fishing at a specific time each week.
39 It’s important to be realistic about your work-life balance, and not to get too stressed if you don’t follow your plan. That’s according to Kate Eby from work management company Smartsheet. Treating yourself well, she says, can help you improve your mental health.
Talk to your boss. 40 But if you’re finding it difficult to get your work-life balance right, doing this may be a good idea. It may be that you have been given too much work to do, or there is better way to do it. It could help you work smarter, not harder.
A. Be kind to yourself.
B. Leave your tasks and projects at work.
C. However, that improves your mental health.
D. Even scheduling a night in front of the TV is enough.
E. Here are just a few ways to keep your balance healthy!

It was a sunny afternoon. Jack was on his way back from the library with some books under his arm. Suddenly, Jack noticed a lost girl on the street standing alone. Her small frame trembled abled (颤抖) slightly as she looked around with wide eyes filled with a mixture of fear and confusion. He immediately realized her problem and decided to step in without hesitation.
“Are you lost, little girl ” Jack asked gently, squatting (蹲) down to her level. She nodded, her lower lip trembling slightly as she held a small teddy bear close to her chest. Jack’s heart went out to her, and he knew he had to help her find her way back to her family.
“Don’t worry, I’ll help you find your way home,” he reassured her with a warm smile. His voice was comforting and calm. The girl hesitated for a moment, looking up at him with uncertain eyes, but then she took his outstretched hand. Jack asked her a series of questions, trying to gather as much information as possible from her. She mentioned her name was Emily and that she had been playing near the park with her mother and younger brother when she got separated from her family.
With Emily’s limited description of her surroundings, Jack began to walk her towards the park, hoping they might encounter her parents or someone who could recognize her. As they walked, Jack chatted casually with Emily, doing his best to distract her from her worries and make her feel at ease. With his efforts, Emily gradually began to relax, her initial fear melting away. She even began to chat happily about her favorite cartoon characters.

第一节【例文】
Significance of Keeping Good Living Habits
Maintaining good living habits is essential for a fulfilling and healthy life. They influence our energy levels, mood stability, resistance to illnesses, and overall quality of life.
A few years ago, I developed some bad habits. My days were filled with junk food for meals, and minimal exercise. This lifestyle, coupled with irregular sleep patterns, led to a gradual decline in my health. I began feeling constantly tired and I even suffered from frequent colds and flu. Luckily, I realized these problems and made a change in time. I began doing morning exercise and keeping a balanced diet. Now, I still stick to these habits.
In a word, good living habits are crucial for us. Let’s cultivate these habits, for ourselves and for those around us.
第二节【例文】
After a few minutes, they reached the park’s entrance. Just as Jack was about to inquire at the information booth, a panicked woman came running towards them, her face pale with worry. “Emily!” She cried, scooping the little girl into her arms. “Oh, thank goodness! We’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Emily’s mother turned to Jack, tears of relief streaming down her face. “Thank you, thank you so much! I don’t know what we would have done without you,” she said, holding Jack’s hand in gratitude.
Jack smiled modestly, feeling a sense of achievement wash over him. “It was no trouble at all. I’m just glad I could help.” As Emily and her mother hugged tightly, Jack quietly slipped away, with slipped away, with a warm feeling inside. He realized that sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference. And on that sunny afternoon, Jack had indeed made a difference in Emily’s life, and in his own. He knew that he had done the right thing, and that the memory of this kind deed would stay with him forever.

Text 9
M: What do you study at college
W: Art. But I gave up my job as a painter when my daughter was born. I thought about teaching art classes Part-time, but instead I started making dolls for my daughter. I love acting, so I often invented plays for the dolls. I once used the dolls to give a show at my daughter’s party. The children loved it. As a result, other parents asked me to do the show at their children’s parties.
M: Have you ever had any problems
W: Only once. I wrote a story about a lion. The children were afraid of the lion and cried. I was worried the parents might complain, but in fact they laughed about it. After that, whenever I’ve invented a new story, I show it to my daughter. She always tells me exactly what she thinks of it.
M: And the shows continue to be successful
W: Yes, I have a wide range of different shows. They become so successful that I could do one every day, but I don’t want to do that. The reason why the shows have become popular is that I love every minute of every show, and so other people love them too.
Text 10
Since their first album——2011’s excellent Tasty Sounds--Invisible Machine has won fans all over the world. The band is made up of three drummers, two bass players, five guitarists, two singers, a trumpet player and a dog, so “unique” is definitely the right word.
The new album, Interesting Stuff, certainly is interesting. Unfortunately, it just isn’t that great. It’s heavy metal, not rock. While the album’s first single, Let’s Go Get Pancakes is very similar to the band’s older work, most of the other songs aren’t. It’s safe to say that the group’s new sound is not a good fit.
In each of all Invisible Machine albums, there is one song that features roaring and barking from the dog, Mr. Woof Woof. While Mr. Woof Woof’s songs are usually just joke songs, the one here, called Here Comes the Bus, is actually really good. The only problem is this: it features a dog roaring and barking. If it had a human singer instead, the song would be one of Invisible Machine’s very best.
Interesting Stuff is not the worst album you’ve ever heard. However, it is probably the worst Invisible Machine album you’ve ever heard.
