Recently, I found four useful apps and have decided to recommend them. Even if you don’t
think some of them apply to you, you still feel free to check them out.
Remente
Remente hopes to help you maintain focus, improve well-being, reduce stress, and get the most
out of life. You begin using Remente by creating an overview of your life through evaluating your
satisfaction in areas like health and fitness, personal development, and education. After Remente
personalizes the app to your needs, it will work as your personal coach to give you guidance.
StressScan
StressScan uses your smartphone camera to assign you an objective Stress Index (指 数 )
measurement that can help you track your stress levels over time. The app detects the changes in
colors from a picture of your fingertip taken with the camera. Then, using heart rate variability
analysis technology, it will analyze the results and assign a Stress Index value from 1 (most relaxed)
to 100 (most stressed).
7 Cups
7 Cups provides online treatment and free support to people having emotional problems by
connecting them with trained listeners. The listener interacts with the person seeking help via a secret
conversation.
Sanvello
Sanvello is based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to provide effective
relief for mental health concerns including anxiety and depression. Its features — videos, audio (音
频的) exercises, and activities — are designed to work together to help you learn how to feel happier.
The app’s mood tracking, daily reminders, and health tracking tools allow you to monitor your
emotions, see positive and negative influences, and create changes.
21.What will the second app show by analyzing users’ heart rate
A. Their focus index. B. Their behavior.
C. Their personality. D. Their stress level range.
22.Which of the following allows users to chat with listeners online
A. Remente. B. StressScan. C. 7 Cups. D. Sanvello.
23.What do the four apps have in common
A. They are designed for users’ mental health.
B. They create an overview of users’ lives.
C. They offer daily reminders to users.
D. They feature videos and activities.
B
Mosquitoes can spread a range of potentially deadly diseases. Existing methods of controlling
the insect can be ineffective. For example, mosquitoes can develop a resistance (抵抗) to insecticides
(杀虫 剂).
Now, Kevin Gorman at the biotechnology firm Oxitec in Abingdon, UK, and his colleagues
have genetically modified (基因改造) males of the mosquito species Aedes aegypti in a way that
will greatly cut the insect’s population. Among all mosquito species, only females bite. So the team
modified males to create so-called OX5034 mosquitoes. They have a gene that allows young male
mosquitoes to live, but prevents the females from surviving into adulthood.
In the peak season for reproducing, OX5034 males were set free into four heavily populated
places in the city of Indaiatuba in Brazil. Within two of these neighborhoods, 100 modified
mosquitoes were released at a time, while the remaining test areas were exposed to up to 500 of the
insects at a pared with a nearby community that wasn’t exposed to any of these
mosquitoes, the places where the modified insects were released saw an 88 percent to 96 percent
decrease in their mosquito population.
The researchers particularly focus on controlling dengue ( 登革热)—a disease caused by a virus
carried by mosquitoes. Globally, the number of dengue cases has grown significantly in the past
three decades, with 100 million to 400 million cases now occurring annually. While the study didn’t
look at whether preventing the mosquitoes led to a lower rate of dengue, there was proof of this
elsewhere. Similar efforts in Australia saw fewer cases of locally spread dengue compared with
previous years. A study also found a 77 percent reduction of dengue in Indonesia after
modified mosquitoes were introduced there.
According to Dawn Wesson at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical
Medicine, Louisiana, Oxitec’s effort is a step up from previous insect control strategies (策略) in
which mosquito sexual selection wasn’t done by genetic means. That’s the beauty of this method. As
well as dengue, Oxitec is making plans for developing modified mosquitoes to reduce other diseases
like malaria, says Nathan Rose at Oxitec.
24.How does Kevin Gorman’s team try to control mosquitoes
A. By decreasing the males’ population. B. By transforming all mosquitoes’ genes.
C. By shortening the females’ life.
D. By improving the insecticides’ effect.
25.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The target and site. B. The process and findings.
C. The data and report. D. The preparations and methods.
26.Why are Australia and Indonesia mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To state the potential use of the method. B. To explain the background of the study.
C. To draw attention to the seriousness of dengue.
D. To show the method’s effect on reducing dengue.
27.What may Oxitec work on next
A. Broadening the applications of the method.
B. Engineering other species of mosquitoes.
C. Exploring better mosquito control strategies.
D. Finding cures for mosquito-related diseases.
C
One Saturday last November, I stepped into my local library. I was about to read a book when I
heard an elderly man speak to a lady. “This library will soon become a café. Everyone is reading
with electronic devices,” he said. Hearing this, I wanted to shout, “I still read library books!” But my
words stuck in my throat and I found teenagers around me were talking to friends or staring at their
phones.
Reading online feels robotic to me. It’s like I stare at a screen and click “next” for the following
page to appear until the very end of the e-book, and at the end of all of that, I just think, “That’s it ”
But when I read a printed book, it’s like I’m holding on to the characters. I can visualize the plot
better, as I can picture the scenes of each moment in my head with more accuracy and imagination.
Besides, some online books miss components that are in the printed novels. For instance, the
physical copy of a fantasy novel I have read contains a map, but the e-book version does not. That is
an injustice to e-book users; after reading and interpreting the map, the story made a lot more sense
for me, in terms of the setting and plot.
And personally, physically turning to the next page is better than clicking “next”. When reading
online, I sometimes worry that I click “next” too quickly. It feels more like a race; I want to finish it
because the pages just keep making that “flipping” sound and I wonder how long the book really is.
Some printed books have a special smell that makes the novel feel special to me. It's hard to
describe but I'm sure I’m not the only one that thinks so. I know I cannot convince every teen to
switch from the digital book to the printed one, but maybe my writing about the difference will at
least get some of them to think about it.
28.Why will the library be replaced by a cafe
A.Few people head for it. B.It lacks good management.
C.Few people read its books. D.It holds little attraction for the youth.
29.Why does the author prefer printed books according to paragraph 2
A.They include additional contents.
B.They leave a vivid impression.
C.They have a special pleasant smell.
D.They can improve readers’ imagination.
30.What influence does reading online have on the author
A.Making her tired of reading. B.Leading her to read aimlessly.
C.Bringing more injustice to her. D.Stopping her digging into reading.
31.What is the author’s purpose of writing this text
A.To awaken teenagers’ interest in reading.
B.To publicize advantages of printed books.
C.To reduce the impact of electronic devices.
D.To encourage teens to change the reading medium.
D
We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who
are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable
silence.
What’s the problem It’s possible that along with the rapid development of society, we all focus
on our phone and desktop, and therefore it results in our compromised conversational intelligence.
However, it’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging,
or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers,
consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results
in big benefits.
Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’
t even exist if it weren’t for small conversation. “Small talk is the grease (润 滑 剂 ) for social
communication,” says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana
University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small
talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just
communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on
their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction with its waiter; the other,
to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported
significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the
waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的)
members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of
belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with
small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
32.What does the underlined word “compromised” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Weakened. B. Enhanced. C. Secret. D. Natural.
33.What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci
A. Showing good manners. B. Relating to other people.
C. Focusing on a topic. D. Making business deals.
34.What can we learn about small talk from the coffee shop study
A. It made the coffee taste better.
B. It reduced waiting time in line.
C. It improved people’s mood and experience.
D. It helped them bond with the server deeply.
35.What is the text mainly about
A. Elevator manners. B. The importance of small talk.
C. Smartphones and social media. D. Developing deep relationships.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I loved going to school. But since May transferred from another school, the atmosphere had
become a bit strange. Everyone thought her attitude was a bit tough. May was about five feet eight
inches tall, making her the tallest kid in our fifth-grade class and, in fact, the whole school. She
challenged the shy third graders and her competitive (好胜的) spirit in gym class put pressure on the
boys.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, I always kept a certain distance from her. I hoped it could stay
that way. But everything changed one morning when I came to class with a new hairstyle. It all
started when my best friend Jamie said my hair looked nice. I felt happy. However, I noticed May’s
serious look, which made me a bit nervous, but I continued focusing on my math work. Then, as
May walked past me, she commented, “Nice braid (辫子).”
I felt a bit surprised. I looked at her, then felt worried because I saw May make a scissors-like
motion (动 作 ) with her fingers towards me. I got nervous and misunderstood, thinking that she
wanted to cut off my braid. After thinking, I decided to hide in the restroom after school to avoid
meeting May on the way home.
I did this for a few days, feeling anxious. One morning, my mom noticed my change. She could
see the stress in my eyes and the way I hesitated (犹 豫 ) before leaving for school. She knew
something was bothering me. So she asked what had happened. I told her, “May wants to cut off my
braid.” Tears started rolling down my cheeks. Mom held my hand and said, “Don’t be afraid, honey.
You might have misunderstood May. She might just want to make friends with you but doesn’t know
how to express it.

make things worse, I had told all my friends that I would certainly be accepted for the course, so it
was really difficult to tell them that I had been turned down. I tried to deal with it by making jokes
about it and looking as if I didn’t care, but that just made me feel even worse. I didn’t know what to
do. It wouldn’t be fair to shout at my family or hit things, although that was what I felt like doing.
Finally, my dad said I should write down my feelings. That helped me a lot, but I don’t think it is the
perfect solution. I think the best thing to do is to talk honestly to others about the way you feel.

答案:
The Rise of Cultural Heritage Tourism
With increasing cultural confidence, cultural heritage tourism has become highly popular, and I
believe this is a positive trend.
Firstly, it helps us connect with our history and traditions, fostering pride and identity. Visiting
historical sites and museums allows us to learn about our ancestors’ achievements and lifestyles.
Secondly, it promotes cultural preservation. Profits from tourism can be used to maintain and restore
historical sites, protecting them for future generations. Lastly, it boosts the local economy by
creating jobs and supporting local businesses.
In conclusion, the popularity of cultural heritage tourism reflects a growing appreciation for our
cultural roots and contributes to both cultural preservation and economic growth.
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
After hearing my mom’s words, I fell into deep thought. Did she really just want to make friends
with me I wasn’t sure, but I was willing to find out. I decided to talk to May. So I found her at break.
I took my courage in both hands and said, “Hi, May. I wanted to invite you to my house this
weekend,” my voice trembling slightly. Then, something unexpected happened. May smiled. Her
smile was warm and sincere. “I’d love to come,” she replied. I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
Paragraph 2:
When May came to my house on Saturday, we greeted each other warmly. We spent the day
talking and laughing. She talked a lot, and at that moment, I realized she was just a girl who wanted
to be accepted. She told me about her love for basketball. I shared my interests in reading and
drawing. We discovered we had a lot in common. From then on, we became good friends. I never
thought it was my braid that helped us build a new friendship.
