Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. “Dolls have a power we don’t
completely understand,” she said. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker
using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw
themselves in those dolls. But for the kids missing a limb or who had lost their hair, there were none
they could relate to.
So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was stuck in self-doubt and
self-distrust, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially
challenging period. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem (自尊)that way, but never offer them anything that looks like them,” she says.
Jandrisevits went about changing that. She crafted a doll by hand — using fabric, stitching,
and markers—that resembled(像)her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo
online of the happy child and doll, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like
her baby, who was missing a leg.
Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks, facial
deformities(畸形) , — in short, a doll that looked like them. She quit her job and started a
nonprofit, A Doll Like Me.
Working out of her home in Milwaukee, from photos sent by parents or caregivers, it takes
Jandrisevits roughly three days to craft only one doll. A GoFundMe page helps her cover costs and
allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit.
In all, she’s made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandriscvits will never give
up. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, medical
issue, or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.”
24.What made Jandrisevits realize the value of dolls
A. The influence of dolls on her. B. Her working experience.
C. The changing medical situations. D. Her relation to the unlucky kids.
25.What does the underlined word―“that” refer to in paragraph 3
A. Children’s concern about their looks.
B. The problems faced by the child of a friend.
C. The challenging period the youth are going through.
D. The fact that words alone fail to help build self-esteem.
26.What can be inferred about Jandrisevits’ making dolls
A. It targets children with mental problems.
B. It is time-consuming but meaningful.
C. It is thought poorly of by people.
D. It brings in a good fortune.
27.Which of the following best describes Jandrisevits
A. Creative and caring. B. Ambitious and devoted.
C. Considerate and sensitive. D. Knowledgeable and generous.
C
When I first launched my business about 10 years ago and started working in Mexico, I noticed
coworkers and friends greeting each other with a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek. So I started doing
that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner took me aside and said,
“Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office I think it
sends the wrong message.”
I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a
fast-growing multinational company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn— and fast. I not only
wanted to stop sending the wrong message, but wanted to start sending the right message. “As a
CEO, it’s important to learn some of the basic phrases in the native languages of your employees—it
shows your respect for their culture,” said my business partner.
Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. In the US, we tend to be driven by
popularity, success and financial reward. Other regions’ drivers can include family pride or the
community contribution. By learning these drivers and how they impact your relationships, you can
build trust truly within your company.
Over the years, I’ve learnt to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity.
They need to be dealt with head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge
large differences, which can lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more
enjoyable company culture. As leaders, it’s our job to put these issues on the table and tackle them
sincerely—no matter what the cultural divide is.
28.Why does the author mention hugging and kissing on the cheek
A. To demonstrate he is integrated in Mexico.
B. To provide an example of his misunderstanding.
C. To support he is fully aware of the custom.
D. To compare body language in different cultures.
29.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. People in the US bank on family functions.
B. People in Mexico focus more on success.
C. Cultural motivations vary with the country.
D. Building trust mainly relies on socialising.
30.What does the underlined word “tackle” in the last paragraph mean
A. Solve. B. Demand. C. Explain. D. Repeat.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. What Is Cultural Diversity
B. What Is Proper Body Language
C. How to Send the Right Message
D. How to Build Trust in a Diverse Culture
D
In one horrible film plot, AI eventually outsmarts humans and takes over computers and
factories. In another, large language models (LLMs) of the sort that power generative AI like
ChatGPT give bad guys the know-how to create destructive cyberweapons.
It is time to think hard about these film plots, not because they have become more probable but
because policymakers around the world are considering measures to guard against them. The idea
that AI could drive humans to extinction is speculative—no one yet knows how such a threat might
materialise and no common methods exist for determining what counts as risky. Plenty of research
needs to be done before standards and rules can be set.
Governments cannot ignore a technology that could change the world deeply. Regulators have
been too slow in the past, but there is danger, too, in acting hurriedly. If they go too fast,
policymakers could create global rules that are aimed at the wrong problems and are ineffective
against the real ones.
Because of the computing resources and technical skills required, only a handful of companies
have so far developed powerful “frontier” models. New hurried regulations could easily block out
competitors to the “handful of companies”, especially because these companies are working closely
with governments on writing the rule book. A focus on extreme risks is likely to make regulators
careful of open-source models, which are freely available and can easily be revised.
The best that governments can do now is to set up the basic systems to study the technology and
its potential risks, and ensure that those working on the problem have enough resources. As AI
develops further, regulators will have a far better idea of what risks they are guarding against, and
consequently what the rule book should look like. A fully mature body could eventually take shape.
But creating it will take time and reflection. 32.What does the first paragraph function as
A. An argument. B. An explanation. C. A comment. D. A lead-in.
33.What does the underlined word “speculative” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Theoretical. B. Common. C. Unique. D. False.
34.What is the harm of regulators’ going too fast on the AI issue
A. Competition in this area is prevented. B. The development of AI is restricted.
C. AI will be applied to a limited degree. D. The public will be misled about danger.
35.Which can be the best title of the text
A. AI: a Real Threat B. Don’t Rush into Policing AI
C. AI: Humans’ Friend or Enemy D. Time for Government to Regulate AI

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As early as middle school I knew that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. Instead, I became
a teacher, and seven years into my teaching career at a small school in West Seattle, I finally decided
to give up my writing dream.
It didn’t mean I stopped writing altogether, but it meant giving up on my first novel. Then one
spring, four years later, my seventh graders and I had the chance to meet bestselling author Jamie
Ford. After hearing his advice about writing prize-winning stories, I revisited my old dream.
I created a novel-writing project the following September when my seventh-grade students
became my eighth-graders. Each week, during language arts class, my students spent an hour writing
stories. During that hour, I told them that I, their teacher, would be doing the same homework. They
were excited to have me working alongside them. Little did they know that I usually spent that hour
writing emails to parents, planning the next day’s lessons, and grading papers.
During a story-writing period, a student called Kellen came up to me with a question about his
book and caught me doing teacher work. He called me out. “Hey! You’re not writing!” he said, both
excited and disappointed he’d caught the teacher off task.
I admitted (承认) it and got back to my novel. All was well until he caught me a second time
during a different story writing period. Again, I had no excuse. I went back to work, and this time I
wrote wholeheartedly, truly working on my novel.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 续写部分分两段,每段开头已为你写好。
Then it hit me that I needed someone to push me to write. Why not Kellen

20.答案:B
解析:Good afternoon, everyone. It’s time for us to inform you that we have made the difficult
decision to close the City Museum. As you know, this museum has been a part of our town for over
50 years. But the number of visitors has dropped sharply and the running costs are increasing, so we
can no longer keep it open. In the past, our museum received over 10,000 visitors on average each
year. However, last year, the number of visitors was only 3,000. What’s more, damaged roofs,
outdated pipes, and electrical issues have pushed the repair budget to 150,000, which we simply
cannot afford. So starting next week, the museum will no longer be open to the public, and we will
move the items to the Discovery Centre Library by next month. We understand this is disappointing
news, but we must make decisions in the best interest of the town. This step will allow us to pay
attention to the local park projects starting next week. Thank you for your understanding.

the next day with a position. “Kellen, would you be interested in being my writing partner You can
help keep me on track, and in return, I’ll give you extra help with your writing.” His eyes lit up with
surprise and excitement. “Really, I’d love that!” From then on, during our writing hour every week,
we would sit together, our heads bent over our respective notebooks. Kellen would offer his own
ideas and suggestions, while I would help him revise his sentences and develop his passages.
One afternoon Kellen asked me whether I want to submit my novel for a competition. The
question caught me off. “Do you really think it’s good enough ” I asked. “Absolutely,” Kellen
replied without hesitation. “It’s the best story I’ve ever read. You are sure to win!” With his
encouragement, I decided to give it a shot. We spent every spare moment polishing each sentence
and refining the plot before submitting my work. Finally, With Kellen’s honest feedback and support,
I got the first prize in our city novel competition. The prize wasn’t just about fulfilling a dream, but
about finding the right partner to help navigate the journey.
