David Brown is known as the world's fastest completely blind runner. He was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.
Brown says he was living in fear for a number of years until he discovered his passion for running. After winning an essay contest, he earned the ticket for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.
Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10.99 in the men's 100-meter dash to take home the gold. Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time. He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn't see the ball coming.“ I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realized I had some speed there,” he says.
He pursued his passion at the Missouri School for the Blind.Brown started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really started running track.
He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running. Brown was one of the 25 winners of an essay contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome obstacles, noting that as he grew up he struggled with depression.
It's important to be in sync (同步) with your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn't have to slow down when running with Brown, because he's fast. “A 10- or 11-second race doesn't require much speaking,” Steward says.“ It's also an honor,” Brown says. He notes that Paralympic runners can't do what they do without guides like Steward, who could theoretically run solo but choose not to. He calls it “a great honor”.

Students in Melanie Good's “Physics and Science Fiction” course watched a clip (片段) from the movie Interstellar, showing an astronaut who has returned to Earth and is about to be reunited with his daughter. The students had just spent an hour learning about Einstein's theory of special relativity.
They knew that, because this astronaut had shot off at enormous speeds an explored near enormous gravitational fields in search of other worlds, his clock would run more slowly than his daughter's, stuck back on Earth. The astronaut was now 124 Earth years old, but he looked exactly like a 48-year-old, while his daughter was now elderly.
One student raised her hand. She understood how the time on two clocks could pass at different speeds, but why didn't bodies still age at the same rate Good, who is a lecturer from the Department of Physics & Astronomy in the University of Pittsburgh, took some time to eventually convince the student that relativity's predictions were accurate.
“I try to teach the physics first and then tie it into the sci-fi,” Good explained after class. While the course attracts mostly humanities majors trying to fulfill a science credit, it doesn't shy away from the toughest concepts in physics.
The trouble with using this kind of fiction as a teaching tool, she allowed, is that no single science fiction work gets everything right. However, she said, “It's OK to suspend disbelief. It's science fiction. Interstellar, for instance, does a pretty good job as an aid to teaching Einstein.”
Gurudev Dutt, an associate professor in Physics & Astronomy, taught the course prior to this semester.“Science fiction is probably what inspired me to get into science in the first place,” he said; perhaps it will inspire others. Bad examples can even be instructive for students, he noted, such as examining the absurdity of Superman flying around the world in the opposite direction of its rotation (转动), to turn back time.
Good said her class this semester also emphasizes the scientific method and how it can be a fruitful approach to academic inquiry in general.

Hard science fiction stories are those in which the science is based on our understanding of the universe today, but allows for an important assumption. For example, a story that involved interplanetary space travel might assume a technology that we don't have today but all of the other science would be based on what we know. Including these things in a science fiction story can be a challenging task for a non-scientist.
Not being a trained scientist, I have always been fascinated by science. I took science classes in both high school and college. But my biggest lessons about science, the scientific method and the evolution (演变) of our knowledge of the universe came from reading Isaac Asimov's science essays.
As a hard science fiction writer, it is my job to illustrate science realistically and accurately, and yet I also have to try to imagine what reasonable changes and advances we might make in the future. I thought it might be useful for me to outline how I managed to stay informed about science and how that creates ideas for my stories.
I read New Scientist and Scientific American regularly, which keeps me up-to-date on those areas of science that most interest me. Oftentimes, the articles in New Scientist will cite journals on a subject that is important to a story I am writing. The book review columns in these magazines often have books of interest and I will note any that interest me and add them to my list.
With my most recent story, Take One for the Road, one reviewer found some difficulty believing my characters could have walked on the surface of Mercury. The reviewer said that if I'd only added one line indicating how they'd done this, it would have helped the story be more believable. It did teach me a good lesson.
Keeping up with science isn't easy. Isaac Asimov wrote an essay called The Sound of Panting which was about how difficult it was just to keep up with one's field. But it helps in my stories, and also makes me better informed about science.

[2024·福建三明高二下期末]How AI will transform education is very important to schools such as mine, teachers such as me, and hardworking care-givers such as the parents in my community. Could AI get our children to grasp new concepts and skills Might AI be better equipped to help them exploit their own intelligence After a few days watching my children use artificial intelligence-based learning tools, I can tell you the short answer is NO.
Human intelligence is different from the computer's. For one, human intelligence can not be measured. The brain is plastic, always developing and growing as we learn from our environments. In addition, human intelligence relies on human interaction. Exercising our intelligence is something we do naturally as we connect with others, consider the world around us and seek to improve our relationship to that world.
In education, there has been a movement toward social-emotional and problem-based learning. So educators attempt to motivate interest in subjects and skills by turning learning moments into communal (共有的) problem-solving events. When we combine analytical learning with social- emotional learning, students become mastered in the material we want them to know and get more excited about the learning process.
Using AI looks very different from this. AI learning often involves an individual working alone with a computer program.
It can crowd source information to help students find facts about their environment, solve a problem and come up with a creative way forward. But AI doesn't force students to think through or keep anything. And simply being fed facts and information is not the same as “learning”.
It is fascinating to imagine that AI might cure what annoys us. Many parents don't have the resources—in time, money or energy—to teach their kids at home. If AI could fill the gaps, how great, right Yet the nature of AI “teaching” as it currently exists means that students merely level up without learning. When it comes to developing intelligence, nothing can beat what we humans have been doing, face to face, for centuries.
5.What do we know about human intelligence according to Paragraph 2
A.It is measured easily. B.It is of great significance.
C.It is related to education. D.It is changeable and interactive.
根据第二段中“For one, human intelligence can not be measured. The brain is plastic, always developing and growing as we learn from our environments. In addition, human intelligence relies on human interaction.”
6.What can be inferred about AI learning from Paragraph 4
A.It is widely used at school.
B.It makes no difference to education.
C.It helps develop students' intelligence.
D.It does little help with students' true learning.
7.What is the author's attitude to AI learning
A.Unclear. B.Neutral.

It was too hot at night for me to fall asleep in the tent, so I crawled out of the tent and walked around to cool down. The sky was clear and stars were shining.
Suddenly a bright light flashed across the sky and then near my tent appeared a flying saucer, which looked just like the one in the book I had read during the day. I quickly hid behind a stone and saw an alien come down through a round door. He walked into my tent and came out with something in his hand.
The UFO then flew away. I immediately ran into my tent and found that my Pad was gone.
I was so puzzled that I couldn't believe what I had seen. But I decided that the next time the alien came, I would talk to him.

Take a Trip to Alaska's Distant Aleutian Islands
Natural landscapes
Halfway between the United States and Japan is Alaska's Adak Island. It is one of the remote Aleutian islands.
It is a place best known for its natural beauty. The coast is home to rich wildlife. Purple lupine flowers can be seen along roads through grassy hills. Hot springs cover the landscape. Snow-topped mountains and the Great Sitkin volcano rise in the distance.
Locals
Adak Island is home to the native Aleut people. In town, fewer than 100 people live fulltime in old military houses. These houses sit in mostly empty neighborhoods with other buildings in need of repair.
Activities
It is not easy to get to Adak Island. It requires a four-hour plane trip from Anchorage. People visit Adak to hunt, watch birds, climb mountains, or examine one of the many abandoned military bases. People also come to hike. There are many beautiful hikes on the island. One at Finger Bay offers views of the volcano. A hike to Lake Bonnie Rose includes an old abandoned military building built into hills.
At Horseshoe Bay, brave people can climb down a rope to the coast below and nearby hot springs. At Clam Lagoon, people can watch harbor seals and sea lions playing in the water and warming themselves on the rocks.
For bird watchers, the area is wonderful. And Adak's strange “National Forest” is also worth a visit. This is a small collection of evergreen trees in an otherwise nearly treeless landscape.

Raj Patel was 5, traveling with his family to India from England. A young girl, no older than 12, approached their car, carrying a crying baby, begging for money and food. “My parents embarrassingly pushed some money out to her from the window,” Patel says. “Since then, the journey has been to figure out why this stuff happens.”
Upon returning to England, Patel decided to rent out his toys and raise money to stop hunger. It didn't take him long to realize his attempts would not fix the problem. While attending Oxford University, Patel had an idea to shift his major to mathematics, believing that mathematics could handle the crisis of hunger and poverty (贫困). But as he dived deeper into the topic, he learned the political and systemic side of the story. So he changed his undergraduate degree back to economics and added the study of philosophy and politics to his pursuits (事业).
After graduation, he worked for the World Bank and the United Nations. But even that, he says, didn't lead to workable solutions
His first book,Stuffed and Starved, was a breakout work written for a general audience. While living in Africa, Patel created a number of documentaries but none gained much popularity until he met Anita Chitaya, an activist in Bwabwa, a remote village in Malawi. Anita works with a local organization that has fought hunger in Malawi for decades. She helps farmers to experiment with crops to grow more nutritious food. Her story evolved into an 11-year project—The Ants & the Grasshopper, which earned the Moving Mountains Award.
As the decade of research, filming and editing carries on, this drought-stricken village goes from being self-sufficient through sustainable farming practices to struggling to grow enough nutritious food and access clean, drinkable water. Climate change ended up being another part of the story.
Patel knows that he needs to find other ways to reach audiences. He released a widely shared YouTube video about capitalism, chicken nuggets (鸡块) and the global hunger crisis. He's given 20-minute TED Talks that summarize the intentions of his books. No matter what gets thrown his way, Patel seems to course-correct in order to continue pursuing his mission.

A humanoid robot can relay video and touch sensations to a person wearing a haptic (触觉内) feedback suit and a virtual reality (VR) headset hundreds of kilometres away, offering a way for people to attend events without travelling.
The iCub3 robot is a 52-kilogram, 125-centimetre-tall robot with 54 joints across its body. Its head contains two cameras where a human's eyes would be, and an Internet-connected computer where the brain would go. Along with the cameras, sensors covering its body send data to the robot's “brain”. These sensations are then reproduced on a suit and VR headset worn by a remote human operator.
When the operators react to what they see and feel, the suit's sensors pick up the movements and the robot matches them. “The key is to translate every signal and bit of digital data that can be sent through the network.” says Stefano Dafarra, who was part of the iCub3 team. There can be a small delay of up to 100 milliseconds to capture and transmit the visual shots, but the operator can ease this by moving slightly slower than normal.
The team demonstrated the robot at the Venice Biennale, where it wandered through an exhibition while its operator stood 290 kilometres away in Genoa. Dafarra hopes people will use the iCub3 to attend events remotely, reducing the need to travel. “But at present, a fall could be hugely damaging to the robot, and it's uncertain whether it could stand up again on its own,” he says.
“iCub3 is an interesting robot and offers clear advantages from the previous versions.” says Jonathan Aitken, whose laboratory owns a prior version of the robot. However, he is disappointed that the team wasn't clear in its research about the data transmission requirements of the new version of the robot. “It would be good to know just how much data was required, and what the upper and lower bounds were.” he says.

As Geoffrey Hinton, widely seen as the godfather of artificial intelligence, warns about growing dangers from how it is developing, businesses are scrambling to see how they can use the technology to their advantage.
Recently, the hot topic is how to employ ChatGPT style technology across their businesses as quickly as possible. A boss looked at his computer, entered the transcript of a customer complaint call, and asked ChatGPT to respond to it based on set of rules. In about a minute it came up with a very credible answer, which was 85% accurate but only cost 1% of the cost of employing staff. The good news for all is the pure enhancement to productivity.
Technology has improved the quality of life. A lot of innovation has made our entertainment time more enjoyable. But the real shock has been that these technologies are usable in a commercial context, not just for “low-cognitive, repetitive” tasks,i. e. robotic-tasks likely to be automated.
The surprise has been how employable the technology is to highly creative, high-value work. Specifically, creating an image, or music, or coding a programme can be achieved in seconds rather than weeks of briefing and refining.
So the good news is that rapid employment of this technology could solve the longstanding productivity crisis. The bad news is that it could occur so rapidly as to overtake workers' ability to adapt in time, creating social crisis. Could we face in call centers and creative studios in the 2020s, the equivalent of what happened in the coal mines in the 1980s
Some individuals have started to suggest that states should provide a basic income due to the possibility of AI leading to job loss. The response of tech enthusiasts is that “You won't be replaced by an AI, but you might be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI”.
But they used to say that's why everybody should learn how to code. That might not be such wise career advice any more.

Avoiding people in a small town requires the skills of a spy.So Brad Ryan moved like a ghost, taking precautions to stay far away from the woman who he thought had broken his heart. He had not seen or spoken to Grandma Joy for six years.
One day, he received a call from his mom, saying his elder sister had announced her engagement and a wedding date had been set for a Duncan Falls church. Brad's heart sank, because Grandma Joy would be there. But he loved his sister, and there was no way he'd miss the wedding.
Despite Joy Ryan's first name, there were lots of sufferings and regrets instead of joy in her life. She grew up in a home with no electricity, running water or plumbing. She attended a one-room schoolhouse. And she suffered the loss of two sons. She was a widow (寡妇) for 14 years. She lived a small life that stopped at the edge of the county line.
And she'd never had the chance to see what she called the great outdoors other than a trip to see relatives in Louisiana.
“My earliest memory of her is when I was 3.” said Brad. “We'd walk to Blue Rock State Park, which is close in her house. She'd help me lift rocks in the creek (小溪) to find crawfish. We'd hold them in our hands and talk about how beautiful it was being in nature. No one in my family thought like that.”
However, as Brad entered adolescence, he was growing emotionally distant from his family, with occasional quarrels. One day, a violent conflict broke out between Brad and his father. Brad turned to his grandma, hoping for help or just a kind word. But he got neither. He found Grandma Joy was in his father's side. “That was the end of my relationship with Grandma Joy.” he said.
At the wedding venue, on seeing Grandma Joy, thin and gaunt (憔悴的). Brad found himself thinking a lot about her and the happy time they spent together. It puzzled him why that memory in particular stayed with him. Now grandma, 78, walked unsteadily into the Duncan Falls church.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

After that day, Brad decided not to leave any regrets in his grandma's life._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Brad hesitantly walked over to her. He gave grandma his arm to help her walk steadily. Stunned but delighted, grandma was about to say something when she was interrupted by Brad, “Grandma, I owe you an apology.” Grandma was overwhelmingly moved, saying that she should have given Brad more patience and understanding. That was a great regret for her in those years. They looked at each other with understanding smiles, their eyes glittering with tears of happiness. As the wedding ceremony began, they took seats next to each other, hand in hand.
After that day, Brad decided not to leave any regrets in his grandma's life. He began to spare more time to accompany grandma, taking her on trips to enjoy the most impressive scenery in the world. During the trips, Brad and grandma shared their life stories, sorrows and joys. Traveling far from Duncan Falls was life-changing for grandma as well as Brad himself. They were not just traveling partners, not just a grandmother and grandson, but friends. For Grandma Joy, her life was eventually full of joys. For Brad, he realized if he hadn't reached out to his grandma, it would be a lifelong regret.

④Over the past 20 years, many inspirational role models ________________ (honor) in Touching China awards.
was built
was invited

He was extremely disappointed to hear that he would not be given a doctor's degree.
We saw him sitting there without doing anything.
=He was seen sitting there without doing anything.
His words made me throw up.
=I was made to throw up by his words.
My father is telling me an interesting story now.
=An interesting story is being told to me by my father now.
=I'm being told an interesting story by my father now.
The old man was often laughed at.
①We saw a stranger enter the building just now.
→_________________________________________________________
A stranger was seen to enter the building just now.
②My uncle gave me a present the other day.
→_________________________________________________________→__________________________________________________________
③The bad weather made me decide to stay here for another day.
→_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
④My uncle took good care of me when I was young.
→_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A present was given to me the other day by my uncle.
I was given a present the other day by my uncle.
I was made to decide to stay here for another day by the bad weather.
I was taken good care of by my uncle when I was young.
1.“情态动词(may, might, can, could, should, ought to, must等)+be+过去分词”构成被动语态
Most of the students consider waste sorting should be carried out immediately across the country.
在使役动词have, make, get以及感官动词see, watch, notice, hear, feel, observe等后面有不定式作宾语补足语时,在主动结构中不定式的to要省略,但变为被动结构时,要加上to。
The manager made saleswomen work until ten at night.(表示主动)
→Saleswomen were made to work by the manager until ten at night.(表示被动)
①The poems, whose topics can be sports, diet and school life must ________ (write) in English.
Carson proves that a simple literary form that ________________ (pass) down through the ages can still ____________ (employ)today to draw attention to important truths.
be written
has been passed
be employed
Compared with the standard fee, which is $800, the group participation discount sounds quite attractive to me.
The science fiction written by Liu Cixin sells very well.
Not only do they know more about the festival but also realize the elderly need to be treated/treating with respect.
4.在“be+adj.+to do”结构中,不定式的逻辑宾语是句子的主语时。
The innocent request was difficult to reject.
①It was a coincidence that the motorcyclist's mother ________________ (treat) at that moment in the same hospital.

[2024·河北保定六校联考高二下期中]When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an article about e-waste. The article said that people were dumping (倾倒) their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals. These harmful substances can get into crops, animals, water supplies—and people.
“I was really worried,” Alex remembers. He showed the article to a few of his classmates. They were worried, too. “What if it's happening here We could be poisoning the environment and not even know it.”
“Maybe we can help,” Alex said. They made this their next project. First, they had to find out what the situation was in their town.So they sent out a survey. What they found amazed them: Of the people who answered the survey, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of (处理) it. One man had dug a huge hole in his backyard and dumped about 50 old Mac computers inside it.
Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste.
The next step was to set up a permanent e-waste drop-off center for the town and to find a company to recycle the waste. That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste—some recycling companies don't dispose of e-waste safely themselves.
Instead, they ship it overseas to countries where local environmental laws are not enforced (施行) and kids their age work at picking apart and burning e-waste with no protection. After a while, these kids get very sick. “We checked carefully online to make sure the company we chose didn't do this,” Alex says.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste.

Lifestyle creep, sometimes called lifestyle inflation, is when living expenses and non-essential expenditures grow with income. In bad cases of lifestyle creep, this unnecessary spending can cut into savings.
Lifestyle creep is most visible among high earners, but anyone can fall into this trap. Who hasn't justified eating out more often every week after receiving a 1 or 2 percent raise The temptation of a more costly lifestyle is difficult to resist. If you're making enough money to afford a larger apartment, shouldn't you move to a larger apartment
Improving your standard of living as your income increases isn't an objectively bad thing, but when that habit cuts into your savings efforts, it can be a major financial risk. As Katie Waters, a financial planner at Stable Waters Financial, says, “Something's got to give.”
Then how to avoid lifestyle creep It just takes the same moderation and planning you used when you had a smaller income. If you can, head off lifestyle creep from the beginning by giving your raise or bonus money a purpose immediately. This can be to pay down debt, save for a house, or add to retirement accounts.
This way, you won't be tempted to spend it on a non-necessity. If you fear you've already fallen victim to lifestyle inflation at any level, you can still turn your spending around. If you are putting all your expenses on your credit card, Waters recommends rearranging so only routine, fixed monthly expenses are on the card. “The monthly variable costs—food, clothing, personal care, purchases for the home, the list goes on—are where your money slips away easily.” Waters says, “Calculate your possible savings each pay period and put that money into a separate checking account.”
“As with all things, the secret to managing your finances like an adult is a constant strive for balance,” Waters says. “Have fun along the way, but don't__let__the__tail__wag__the__dog.”

E项中的“campaigns”与小标题中的“Advertising”构成同义复现,且E项中的“deliver more effective campaigns and generate higher sales”与上文中的“identify the most effective ad placements”相照应。
