一、长句的基本概念
1.Some people know what they want to do from a young age, but many others just have a few ideas bouncing around in their heads.
[句式分析] 这是由转折连词but连接的并列复合句,表达前后两种情况的对比。前半部分是“主谓宾状”结构,其中含有what引导的宾语从句;后半部分是“主谓宾”结构,其中的bouncing around in their heads作定语修饰ideas。

二、破解长句
1.依谓语,找主语

[句式分析] 本句为主从复合句。本句的主语为We;谓语为wanted;主干为We wanted to do something。 本句包含where引导定语从句,修饰先行词something,说明其具体内容,即发起一个呼吁。不定式短语 to submit stories for a contest作目的状语,说明发起呼吁的目的,即让艺术家提交故事参加比赛。
[自主翻译] 我们想要做一些事情,即向湾区的艺术家发起呼吁,让他们提交故事参加比赛。
【典例2】 [2023·新课标Ⅱ卷阅读D]Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them.
[句式分析] 本句的主语为: Naming each nature experience,谓语为create;本句包含双重定语从句,首先which引导的定语从句中修饰前半句话,在这一定语从句中又嵌入了一个that引导的定语从句来修饰activities。

[总结] 一般情况下,一个谓语形式的动词对应其动作的发出者(主语),我们可以根据谓语动词的意义来确定其主语。而且,如果一个句子中出现两个或两个以上的谓语形式的动词,则该句可以是并列句或复合句(并列谓语动词的情况除外)。
2.提主干,去枝叶
[2024·新课标Ⅰ卷阅读D]“With the rise of technology it is easy for people to make observations of different species with the aid of a mobile application,” said Barnabas Daru, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor of biology in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences.
[句式分析] 本句的主干为:“it is easy for people to make observations”, said Barnabas Daru;本句包含的从句非常多且复杂,忽略修饰成分和状语:“with the rise of technology”为伴随状语, “with the aid of a mobile application”为方式状语, 均修饰主干句。而主干句则以“it”为形式主语; 忽略定语从句: who引导的定语从句修饰Barnabas Daru,不影响主干句意,可忽略。
[自主翻译] 该研究的主要作者、斯坦福大学人文与科学学院生物学助理教授 Barnabas Daru 表示:“随着技术的兴起,人们可以轻松地借助移动应用程序来观察不同的物种。”
[总结] 一般情况下,一个句子中的主句所表达的信息为主要信息,从句、状语和定语等所表达的信息为次要信息。若句子的主干提炼不出来,就不能完全把握句子的核心意义,从而导致思维混乱,主次不分。
3.寻关联,辨逻辑
We are not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets—all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.
[句式分析] 此句为复合句,本句的主干为: We are not tempted by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets。本句中, all the devices为同位语,随后紧跟两个由that引导的定语从句。第一个定语从句修饰先行词devices,第二个定语从句修饰先行词information。此外,第二个定语从句中还包括“A is to B what C is to D”结构,进一步增加了从句复杂度。学生提取两个that和对应先行词后,便可轻松分解结构。

4.看搭配,防分隔
【典例1】 Some companies have made the manufacturing of clean and safe products,to some degree,their main selling points and emphasize it in their advertising.
[句式分析] 本句是一个“主语+谓语+宾语+宾语补足语”句型,“make+宾语+宾语补足语”意为“使……成为……”,只不过宾语和宾语补足语被to some degree隔开而已。
[自主翻译] 一些公司把卫生的、安全的产品的生产,从某种程度上说,当作他们的卖点,并在广告中强调这一点。
【典例2】 The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.
[句式分析] 本句的主干为The fact does not mean that...emotions,其中,that they do not experience emotions 是从句,作mean 的宾语。that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another 为fact 的同位语从句,其中as do members of another 是状语从句,助动词do 位于主语members of another 前形成倒装,主语后省略了express their emotions。
[自主翻译] 一种文化背景下的人不像另一种文化背景下的人一样直率地表达他们的情感,这一事实并不意味着他们没有这些情感。
[总结] 有时一个长句或难句是由一个或多个搭配构成,而且这些搭配中常常出现分隔现象。学生若受分隔现象的干扰而看不清句子的本来面目,对句意的理解就会发生偏差。
