As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered, with estimates suggesting that there are between 2.2 million and 3.8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet to be identified. However, professionals in the field are not alone in their efforts to uncover new species. An enthusiastic community of amateurs has emerged, bridging the gap between professionals and non-professionals. These amateurs have even made significant discoveries. One such amateur is Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom enthusiast and professional photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, Taylor Lockwood developed a fascination with mushrooms. “Outside my cottage were these amazing mushrooms,” he says. “And it was as if these mushrooms looked at me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world how pretty we are.’” Lockwood answered their call and purchased camera equipment to capture their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so intense that he would even dig holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect angle for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom that looked like tiny fingers wearing off-white gloves. Upon deeper investigation, fungi researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a “hazel glove” mushroom, which is a rare find. “Mushrooms are not like plants,” Rossman says. “They don't come up at the same time every year, and so sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits.” Rossman says that's why it's so valuable to have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren't sufficient, so he chose to create time-lapse (延时拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. “When I do time-lapse, I see so much life happening around the mushrooms—insects, worms and other small creatures interacting with them,” he says. Lockwood's love for art is evident in his approach to filming mushrooms over time. Although he appreciates the scientific aspect of his work, he identifies himself as an artist at heart.
1.What can we learn about mushroom amateurs from Paragraph 1

[2024·昆明高二下期末]When working outside, there's a constant battle of wearing a hat to get shade over your face, but then having a sweaty head whenever your hat is on. With the evolving technology, hats have stepped forward as well. Now, there is a brilliant new invention to take care of this problem. It's called the Kool Breeze Solar Hat.
It's a solar-powered straw hat that has an integrated fan right on the front, which blows fresh air inside the hat right onto the top of your head. A hole in the rear of the hat keeps air constantly flowing from front to back. This way, you'll have shade over your neck and face from UV rays, while keeping your head and hair inside the hat from getting too hot and sweaty. Since it's completely solar-powered using a solar panel (太阳能板) right on the top of the hat, there is no need for batteries, but the fan will only run while in direct sunlight.
If you are outside or sweating a lot in hot weather, it's a perfect piece of head wear to use. Whether you are working on the yard, fishing on the boat, or kayaking, it provides great sun protection and allows you to enjoy outdoor activities.
It has become the best-seller on many websites where customers have a larger selection of sizes and designs. The solar-powered fan straw hat comes in 4 different sizes to accommodate most sized heads, from small to extra-large.
Here are some highly praised comments from users: “The solar-powered straw hat is truly outstanding. It combines functionality and fashion perfectly, and I can't imagine going outdoors without it.” “This hat is a game-changer! It's efficient, lightweight, and gives me the freedom to charge my devices on the go. It's a must-have!”
5.What is the feature of the Kool Breeze Solar Hat
A.It possesses constant battery power.
B.It looks stylish on various occasions.

[2024·安徽蚌埠高二下期末]My parents had purchased an Island Packet 445 ten months prior, and the day to board this boat had finally come. I was 11 years old and knew absolutely nothing about this cruising (海上航游) lifestyle my father had been speaking so highly of for the previous five years. The only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want to leave my home. My father was excited, my mother nervous, my brother disinterested, and I sullen. I was not at all eager about this change in my lifestyle.
The first three months on the boat had not been very easy. What my dad called an adjustment period I called a nightmare. But, after three months of traveling, we had a lucky break. In La Paz, there was another cruising boat with a 13-year-old boy aboard. Two weeks later, Glen and I could be seen endlessly boogie boarding (趴板冲浪) the crashing waves to the beach. After meeting Glen, cruising for me began to get better and better. At some point during these months, I decided to give this cruising idea a chance.
One year later, we continued touring through the South Pacific. I was learning new skills and learning how to work independently. I often took a five-hour watch during the dark hours of long passages. This was quite a bit of responsibility to hand over to a 13-year-old, especially considering I was in charge of adjusting sails as the conditions changed, and keeping an eye and ear out for any problems. Almost everybody in the cruising community treated me as an adult while still understanding I was a child, thereby giving me the flexibility to make childish mistakes.
As of this writing, my family has now been aboard for three years. We have plans to return to Canada in 12 months and, similar to how I opposed moving onto the boat,I am now completely opposed to moving off it. I have so much fun and learn so many things on this boat that I can't imagine ever returning “home”, a place I hardly even remember.

Government agencies and volunteer groups in many places are using sea creatures to protect coastal areas from storms and rising sea levels. The idea is that large groups of oysters (牡蛎) known as colonies, can help reduce the power of waves. Powerful waves can damage lands along the edge of ocean waters.
Oysters may play an important part in dealing with the problem. Oysters are central to a project that is taking place near Vaccaro's rebuilt house. The project is being carried out by the Littoral Society. It received $1 million from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The group has been building steel wire containers, filling them with rocks and whelk (海螺) shells and positioning them along the shoreline of Barnegat Bay.
Tiny baby oysters are attached to whelk shells and placed in the existing cages to further strengthen the shoreline. The shoreline in Vaccaro's neighborhood has lost 46 meters of beach since 1995, the Littoral Society says.
The oysters appear to be doing their job. One recent day, a strong east wind blew across the bay. But between the oysters and the shoreline, the water was much calmer, and waves gently went onto the shoreline instead of hitting it with force.
As an added benefit, the oysters help improve water quality in the bay. The Associated Press reports that a single oyster can filter (过滤) up to 190 liters of water a day.
A few kilometers south, a group called ReClam the Bay is building an oyster reef to protect the shoreline of Mordecai Island. People do not live on the island, but it protects the shoreline of Beach Haven, a town on Long Beach Island.
Volunteers fill bags with 16 kilograms of whelk shells, to which millions of baby oysters have been attached. Then volunteers move them out to the reef a few hundred yards into the ocean. They have placed 10,000 bags of oysters and whelk shells there since 2015.

[2024·河北邯郸高二下期末]Lynda Doughty, a marine biologist, developed a passion for marine wildlife during her childhood. Growing up along the coast of Maine, she witnessed the impact of human activity on marine mammals and she made it her life's work to protect them. “I feel this intense responsibility to help these animals,” Lynda said. “And, really, this is what I was put on this Earth to do.”
Harbor seals are among the most common mammals found along the East Coast, and they face various threats to their well-being, including fishing nets and illegal feeding, chemical pollutants, as well as boat and propeller (螺旋桨) injuries.
Earlier in her career, she worked for a marine mammal emergency response organization that eventually closed due to lack of funding. To fill the gap left by the group, Lynda started her own non-profit organization—Marine Mammals of Maine in 2011. It has since provided response and medical care for more than 3,000 marine mammals.
Lynda's team operates a 24-hour hotline that responds to calls regarding marine mammals in danger. Their permit allows them to respond to mammals stranded (搁浅) within 2,500 miles of the coastline, and her team only offers help if the mammal is in critical condition. Critically ill mammals are transported to Lynda's center and nursed back to health. Seals typically require three or more months of professional care treatment before they are released back into the ocean.
In addition to mammal rescues, Marine Mammals of Maine conducts important research to learn about marine mammal habitats and human impacts. Marine mammals can give us clues about the ocean's health, which ultimately affects human well-being as well. The organization also helps promote marine conservation among youth and the local community. In addition, they instruct the public on what to do, and what not to do, when encountering wild species like harbor seals.

One of humanity's greatest achievements has been mastering routes across the world's munities separated by thousands of miles have been brought into contact. Customs have been decisively changed by the movement of ships across the oceans. No one drank tea in medieval (中世纪的) Europe, but once contact had been made with the tea-drinking Chinese, tea became the favorite of millions of people from Sweden to the United States.
We tend to think that the opening of the oceans was the work of great explorers like Christopher Columbus, especially the 15th-century pioneers who edged__their__way through uncharted waters to southern Africa, the Indian Ocean and the spice lands of the Indies. But while these men did give the Age of Discovery its name, they didn't start the exploration of the world's oceans.
There were scores of merchants who developed trade links across the world and started modern globalization. These were the people who really mastered the oceans and brought the continents into contact. Already around 2500 BCE, merchants were setting out from what is now Iraq, the seat of the ancient Sumerian civilization, carrying silver ingots (银锭) to India. On the way, they got copper (铜) from Oman and brought precious objects such as carnelian (红玛瑙) from India. The Indian Ocean became one of the great channels of trade between nations.
By 1500 CE, the Portuguese had begun to show interest in what the Atlantic might offer. That interest had resulted in the settlement of unoccupied islands. When European sailors started entering the Pacific and the Indian Ocean in the 16th century, they found a lively maritime world that they could never truly dominate. Since then, the oceans have only continued to tie the world together.
In the 21st century, however, new factors have changed entirely the way goods are carried across the seas. The great port cities of the world have been replaced by automated docks. Container ships carry many thousands of containers. Business today operates on a much larger level than it did just two decades ago. And yet, through trade and cultural exchange, the seas continue to connect even the most distant lands.
5.Why does the author mention tea drinking in the first paragraph
A.To discuss the health benefits of drinking tea.
B.To emphasize the popularity of tea in medieval Europe.
C.To show how Europeans started to adopt Chinese customs.
D.To highlight the spread of cultural practices through ocean contact.
6.What does the underlined part “edged their way” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Dominated the maritime world.
B.Settled on unoccupied islands quickly.
C.Successfully established a convenient route.
D.Carefully moved forward under challenging situations.
7.Who are the pioneers of ocean exploration according to the text
A.The Portuguese settlers of remote islands.
B.The great explorers during the Age of Discovery.
C.The merchants from the ancient Sumerian civilization.
D.The European sailors who entered the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
8.What is a suitable title for the text
A.The Impact of Tea on Global Trade
B.Ocean Exploration Changed Human History
C.Merchants Advanced the Development of Capitalism
D.The Transformation of Ocean Shipping in the 21st Century

Text 10
We've just received word that Hurricane Harry has changed its course, and is now heading straight for the mainland. We expect to have winds of over 150 miles per hour. The hurricane should arrive at about 3 p.m. this afternoon. Please get prepared for it. Cover your windows with boards as much as possible. Tie your boats down well. No camping is allowed on the beach; it's too dangerous. If you are planning to leave for the day,try to get out of town before three. For those of you staying in town, stay indoors and out of your cars.
After the hurricane dies down, be careful of loose electric wires. The electricity company will be out repairing the wires as soon as possible. Don't touch any wires on the ground. If your electricity goes out, be patient. The electricity company will be working as quickly as possible. Keep your radio turned to this station for further information.

Two teenagers are being hailed as heroes for saving a man from an oncoming train just seconds before it arrived. Freddie Corbett, 15, and Harley Hollingworth, 16, acted swiftly when they saw a distressed man jump onto the tracks at Bolton train station in South Yorkshire over the weekend.
The friends, waiting for the last train home on Saturday night as their 11 p.m. curfew (宵禁) approached, noticed the man and heard him express his intention to end his life.
“Freddie shouted out loud to stop the man from doing such silly things. Without hesitation, he jumped onto the tracks despite the oncoming train,” Freddie's mother, Jill Corbett, told Sky News.
Harley, who also leapt onto the tracks to help, said, “I wasn't worried about the train. I just wanted to make sure Freddie got him off the tracks. We could see the train's headlights approaching. It's not a very long bend.”
“The train arrived about 45 seconds after we got off,” the man kept saying. “You're good lads. You could tell the man was struggling.” While awaiting help, Freddie and Harley had a heartfelt conversation with the man, learning about his troubles.
Gary Robinson of Network Rail praised the teenagers for their lifesaving actions. In a social media post, Gary wrote. “Tonight a male with intent to self-harm on the railway... these two lads were his angels. They dragged him off the railway and talked with him until I arrived. They undoubtedly saved his life! Kids often get a bad press, but with humanity like what these lads showed tonight, we are in safe hands! These two lads are a credit to their parents, and I can't speak highly enough about them.”
Freddie's father, Billy, from Goldthorpe, expressed his pride, saying both parents felt it was “about time we had some good news and good press about our kids.” Harley's father, Dale, added, “I was buzzing. I'm bursting with pride. He's just a typical grumpy teenager, but clearly, he has a heart of gold.”

My fingers flew across the keyboard as I typed the final sentence of my essay. I watched the sun rise from the window as I pulled yet another all-nighter. I was a hardworking “A” student pursuing two degrees. I was successful, continuously earning awards, scholarships, and recognition. However, underneath it all, I was often stressed to the bone.
If you have ever found yourself in the middle of a library feeling totally exhausted and overwhelmed, I see you. Stanford University calls it duck__syndrome,__a phenomenon commonly found in college students. Like ducks, students appear calm on the surface, yet paddle (划水) desperately underneath just to stay afloat.
Duck syndrome can lead students to feel anxious, depressed, and inadequate among their peers. Besides the stress of a college environment, these struggles may be especially common for students whose families overly stress achievement.
Like the hot tea kettles (壶) ready to burst, many college students are dealing with similar challenges, even if their calm behaviors suggest otherwise. While there is no direct cure for duck syndrome, leaning into community can be a powerful tool for reminding us that we are not alone.
When I reflect on my undergraduate experience with duck syndrome, I remember how every all-nighter brought me closer to fulfilling a task, but pushed me further away from my desirable well-being. Whenever I encounter a college student today, I share the same advice I wish I would have listened to years ago: Slow down. Take a nap. Don't forget to eat. Breathe. College goes by in the blink (眨) of an eye, and you won't remember much if you don't learn to take care of yourself.
After all, ducks need their rest, too.

Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered in water, but it's undrinkable. Scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have modeled a system that can collect water vapor (水蒸气) from above the ocean surface and freeze it into fresh drinking water at a large scale.
Water shortage is an issue that's projected to get worse, as climate change makes dry areas even drier. The oceans, home to over 96% of water on Earth, represent a huge potential reservoir (a place to store water), but desalination (海水淡化) is a challenging and complex prospect to scale up because of the poisonous wastewater it produces.
But nature already has a pretty good desalination system—the sun is heating up the surface of the ocean and evaporating water out of it, which of course goes on to become rain. In a new study, the UIUC team came up with a method to use this resource. The team proposes that structures could be built several kilometers offshore to obtain air rich in water vapor from above the ocean surface. That air can then be piped back to land and turned into water. This fresh water could then be used for drinking, agriculture, or whatever else a region needs it for. The whole system could be powered by offshore wind farms and land-based solar panels.
The researchers evaluated 14 cities around the world, analyzing how much water could be collected based on the offshore air in those locations. Based on their models, the scientists estimated that these structures could collect between 37.6 billion and 78.3 billion liters of water per year, depending on the conditions in a specific location.
The team says that the solution is pretty good, since it works like the natural water cycle except that the vapor is guided to where it's needed. “The system we are proposing will be useful under climate change. This provides a much needed approach for adaptation to climate change, particularly to populations living in dry and semi-dry regions of the world,” said Afeefa Rahman, the co-author of the study.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文,科学家建立了一个系统模型,该系统可以从海洋表面上方收集水蒸气,并将其大规模冻结成新鲜的饮用水。文章介绍了该系统的工作方式以及未来的应用。
32.Why do scientists design this vapor-collecting system

34.What can be learned from the fourth Paragraph
A.The system could be applied around the world.
B.More and more cities would bring in the system.
C.The researchers have built structures in 14 cities to collect water.
D.The researchers made great efforts before introducing the system.
35.What is Afeefa Rahman's attitude towards the system
A.Negative. B.Concerned.
C.Skeptical. D.Optimistic.
答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句可知,这为适应气候变化,特别是生活在世界干旱和半干旱地区的人口,提供了一种急需的方法。由此推知,Afeefa对这个系统持乐观的态度。

参考范文:
Hello, everyone,
It's a great honor for me to make a speech about the protection of sea creatures. The past few years have witnessed a rapid reduction in the number of sea creatures, some even being in danger of extinction. There are various reasons behind this. To begin with, people are not aware of the importance of protecting the marine environment, so large quantities of pollutants have been poured into the ocean. Besides, some people hunt illegally for profit, which results in a decrease in the types of sea creatures. Therefore, it's high time we took some effective measures to protect them.
That's all. Thanks for listening!
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Caitlyn stepped into the warm and wet sands. The white waves raced over her feet and up her legs and then pulled back again. Caitlyn was on vacation with her family in a nearby coastal town, and she loved playing in the ocean water.
“Ouch!” cried the girl, as her foot stepped on something hard. She looked down and it was a large shell (贝壳). Caitlyn bent down to pick it up. It was a pretty pink shell with points and an opening that looked like a horn (号). She held it up to her ear, hoping to hear the whooshing sound (呼啸声). Instead, she heard something quite different.
“Hey kid! Want to hear a joke?”
Caitlyn nearly dropped the shell. Holding it back up to her ear, she tried again.
“Why don't fish play basketball?” the shell asked.
“I... I don't know,” Caitlyn whispered.
“Because they are afraid of the net! Ha, ha!” laughed the shell. Caitlyn looked around to see if anyone was looking at her. Nobody was.
“That's, uh, funny,” she replied. She didn't really know what was going on.
“Why don't oysters (蚌) share their pearls?” It seemed to be waiting for a reply.
“Uh, I'm not sure.” Caitlyn said. Was she dreaming
The shell answered its own joke. “Because they're ‘shellfish’! Ha, ha!”
The girl laughed. On and on the shell went, being silly and making jokes. Caitlyn sat in the shallow water and listened for an hour. When her mother called to her, saying it was time to go, the girl laid the shell gently on the sands. She promised to come back the next day. And she did.
On the last day of her vacation, Caitlyn decided she couldn't leave the shell behind.
“You're coming home with me,” she said to the pretty shell. She thought it would be happy.
“My home is in the ocean,” it replied, without any laughter in its voice.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
But Caitlyn couldn't bear to go home without it.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Gently, she lowered it back under the water._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
参考范文:
But Caitlyn couldn't bear to go home without it. Despite the shell's protest, she carefully wrapped it in a soft cloth and placed it in her bag, determined to find a way to make it happy. As they drove back home, Caitlyn brainstormed ideas on how to create a suitable environment for her new friend. She imagined a large aquarium filled with saltwater and colorful coral, where the shell could feel at home.
Gently, she lowered it back under the water. As they arrived at the beach on the last day of their vacation, Caitlyn realized that taking the shell away was not the right thing to do. With a heavy heart, she walked back to the spot where she had found it and knelt down. The shell seemed to sense her intention, and its voice was filled with a sense of relief when it spoke again. “Thank you for understanding,” it said softly. Caitlyn carefully placed the shell back in the shallow water, watching as it settled into the sand. As she turned to leave, she felt a sense of peace knowing that she had made the right decision.
