[2024·青岛高二检测]Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way.The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days.On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.

The pair established the Tuk-Tuk Educational Trust, a U.K. registered charity.
Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world's leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but in spite of this pledge (誓言,承诺), over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”

Power often boosts an employee's creativity because being powerful liberates the individual from restrictions. However, new research shows that employees who are not in positions of power can become more creative when given time to “warm up” to a task by engaging in the creative task more than once.
“This is important because when people with more power are able to express their creative ideas more than those with less power, which leads to a rich-get-richer dynamic that strengthens these power imbalances.” said Brian Lucas, assistant professor in the Cornell University. “Understanding ways to boost the creativity of lower power workers can help them find the right way to deal with this low-power disadvantage,” Lucas said.
Lucas and his colleagues conducted two studies to reach their conclusion. In the first study, they divided the creative idea generation session into two rounds consisting of a one-minute “warm up” followed by a second round in which the participants could take as long as they wanted. Participants were randomly assigned to a high-power condition or a low-power condition, and feelings of power were generated with a role manipulation (操纵) where participants were given a leadership role and control over resources (high power) or an employee role with no control over resources (low power). The study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the warm-up round. There was no difference, though, in creativity in the second round.
In the second study, the researchers gave them a different creative task and increased the number of rounds from two sessions to five, taking as long as they like to complete the task. Similar to the first study, the study found that high-power individuals were more creative than low-power individuals in the first round. But the creativity of low-power individuals caught up to the creativity of the high-power individuals after the first round.
“The low-power warm-up effect suggests a simple intervention that empowers all employees to tap their creative potential and overcomes power imbalances in the workplace: when pursuing creative work, let employees warm up first,” Lucas said.
5.Why is it important to boost lower-power workers' creativity according to Lucas
A.It stimulates power balances.
B.It motivates their ambition to catch up.
C.It encourages a harmonious workplace.
D.It creates a competitive work environment.
6.How did the participants feel the power in the first study
A.By competing with leaders.
B.By receiving different positions.
C.By working in different working conditions.
D.By finishing a creative task with time limits.
7.How did the second study differ from the first study
A.It had more rounds.
B.More participants were involved.
C.Participants had a more complicated task.
D.Participants' creativity gap became wider.
8.What is the main idea of the text
A.Power tends to encourage creative ideas.
B.Changing tasks boosts all the employees' creativity.
C.Warm-up time corrects creativity power imbalances.
D.Low-power individuals outperform the high-power ones.

[2024·山东滨州高二下期末]One evening, Rachel Lapierre bought a $4 scratch ticket while picking up groceries. After an exhausting day, she needed something to lift her spirits. The 46-year-old mother of four was wearing herself thin as a nearly full-time emergency room nurse and part-time volunteer aid worker.
She longed to be able to one day quit nursing job and focus on the volunteer work she found most fulfilling. She vowed to herself that if she ever won the lottery, that's what she would do.
Lapierre went home and scratched her ticket, revealing three sunny faces. The next day, the Loto-Quebec office informed her that she had won a lump sum of $675,000 or $1,000 a week for life. She chose the latter. “I know myself,” she said. “The lump sum would have melted like snow in the sun.”
Staying true to her word, Lapierre quit her nursing job and dedicated her life to helping others through her passion project, Le Book Humanitaire, which has since become a registered charity.
Le Book, as Lapierre, now 62, affectionately calls it, began as a simple list of good deeds. To her, the deeds were just small acts of kindness—buying clothes for a family of newly arrived immigrants, delivering a meal to an isolated senior or giving medical attention to someone living on the streets.
“Le Book has had an immense impact on me and on many vulnerable people,” says Martyne, 52. The former special-education technician suffers from long Covid and has been unable to work since getting sick in March 2020. Martyne is now on Le Book's food delivery route. “With courtesy and no judgment, Le Book helps us get what we need,” she says.
“When you do a good deed, it has a butterfly effect,” says Lapierre. “One good deed can affect 10 people. So if we all do a good deed That can save the world.”

The sharing economy is an economic model defined as a peer-to-peer (个人对个人) based activity of getting, providing, or sharing access to goods and services that are often facilitated by a community-based online platform.
Sharing economies allow individuals and groups to make money from underused assets (资产). In a sharing economy, assets such as spare bedrooms can be rented out when not in use. In this way, physical assets are shared as services. Data provided by the Brookings Institute detailed the Airbnb's cost advantage over hotel space as homeowners make use of spare bedrooms. Airbnb rates were reported to be between 30%-60% cheaper than hotel rates around the world.
The sharing economy has developed over the past few years and it now serves as an inclusive term that refers to a host of online economic transactions (交易) that may even include business-to-business interactions. Other platforms that have joined the sharing economy include co-working platforms that provide shared open workspaces, or fashion platforms that allow individuals to sell or rent their clothes.
Criticism of the sharing economy often involves regulatory uncertainty. Unlicensed individuals offering rental services may not be following local regulations or paying the associated costs. This could mean giving them an advantage that enables them to charge lower prices. Another concern is that lack of government regulation will lead to serious abuses of both buyers and sellers in the sharing economy. This has been highlighted by numerous highly publicized cases like the unfair treatment of ridesharing contractors by the platforms.
There is also a fear that the greater amount of information shared on an online platform can create racial and/or gender discrimination (性别歧视) among users. This can happen when users are allowed to choose who they will share their homes or vehicles with, or because of statistical discrimination by algorithms (算法) that select users with characteristics such as poor credit history or criminal records.
For example, Airbnb had to face racial discrimination complaints from African-American and Latino would-be renters due to widespread user preference not to rent to these customers. As more data is presented and the sharing economy keeps developing, companies within this economy have promised to fight discrimination by limiting the availability of information to and about buyers and sellers.
5.Why does the author mention Airbnb in Paragraph 2
A.To highlight the potential of renting spare bedrooms.
B.To show the intense competition in the hotel industry.
C.To suggest the rapid development of the sharing economy.
D.To illustrate the concept of sharing physical assets as services.
6.What is one of the main criticisms of the sharing economy according to the text
A.Being subject to local regulations leads to higher costs.
B.Individuals offering rental services charge higher prices.
C.Sharing service providers avoid government regulation.
D.Cases of unfair treatment of ridesharing contractors are increasing.
7.How does the author explain discrimination in the sharing economy
A.By analyzing the causes.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving historical examples.
D.By sharing personal experiences.
8.What solution has been proposed in response to discrimination
A.Implementing stricter government regulations.
B.Increasing racial and gender diversity among users.
C.Encouraging more users to share their homes on Airbnb.
D.Restricting access to data regarding both consumers and suppliers.

Moving can be daunting (令人怯步的)—whether it's to a new city or an entirely new country. The good news Volunteering can be a great way to settle into a new community, meet people, and learn valuable skills.
Kajal Patil moved to the United States from India in February 2017. Having previously volunteered for two years as an assistant yoga (瑜伽) teacher in her home country, Kajal was enthusiastic about volunteering and began looking for volunteer opportunities that match her interests on VolunteerMatch.
Kajal was drawn to a volunteer opportunity with the Meridian International Center to review applications on behalf of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). YLAI aims to empower Latin American and Caribbean business and social entrepreneurs (企业家) to transform their societies and contribute more fully to economic development, security, human rights, and good governance.
Kajal had previous experience working with the markets candidates were applying from, and the position also allowed her to work remotely. Her role involved reviewing 44 in-depth applications from potential candidates across Latin America and the Caribbean for a four-week fellowship in the US. She was responsible for describing the business ideas presented by these candidates, assessing the social impact of their businesses, and determining the strength of candidates to carry out their plans.
Kajal says that this volunteer opportunity super-charged her existing skills while helping her build new ones such as time management, business analysis, decision-making, planning, and presenting. She is now looking for her next volunteer opportunity and reflects positively on her experience with Meridian International Center. “A new country brings in a lot of new experiences and volunteering helped me to settle into a new environment,” adds Kajal.“By helping others, I felt needed in society. In the summer of 2019, Tomas Quinones was undertaking a “bikepacking” trip, covering some remote desert in Southern Oregon. His trip had been marked with usual minor setbacks. He'd lost shoes. His water supply was sometimes uncertain. But there had also been moments of unexpected kindness: A couple parking beside offered to share their lunch; or the guy in the truck asked if he needed help. On the last day of Quinones' trip, he was riding down a dusty track when he came upon a man lying unconscious on the ground, who was clearly dehydrated (脱水的). Quinones tried to give some water and waited until the ambulance arrived.
Quinones, who'd received help over the course of his trip, paid it forward. The odds are, if you've spent any time in the wild, you'll have experienced these gestures of kindness from strangers or given them yourself too as Quinones did.
So what is it about being outside in nature that makes people want to help others
The first explanation is that in the wild, there may not be any other help. According to the “bystander effect” (旁观者效应), the more people who are in the presence of someone needing help, the less likely any of those are to actually provide it. But another idea is that there is something about nature itself that seems to promote “prosocial (亲社会)” attitudes. As a recent study suggests, exposure to nature can stimulate feelings of transcendence—a sense of connection to other people, to the world around us and to the universe.
When we get into the wild, we become weaker. And being in an easily-hurt position makes us look at the world differently. So, in the wild, where we are removed of normal possessions, surroundings and identities, we seem more willing to go the extra mile for someone.It's__in__nature,__ironically,__that__we__can__learn__new__things__about__humanity.
5.What can we know about Quinones' trip
A.Pretty constant water supply was available.
B.Food was frequently provided from other strangers.
C.He'd usually encountered dramatic troubles.
D.He'd travelled to some remote desert on bicycle.
6.Why is Quinones' experience of offering help mentioned
A.To give further details of Quinones' trip.
B.To show the difficulty of Quinones' trip.
C.To provide an example for the topic.
D.To stress the importance of strangers' help.
7.What can we infer from the “bystander effect”?
A.It explains people's getting help easily in nature.
B.It demonstrates people's prosocial attitudes.
C.It reveals people's indifference in crowds.
D.It stimulates people's connecting to people and the world.
8.What does the last sentence of the passage imply
A.We can only learn about people's personality in the wild.
B.It is a pity that people don't often help others in daily life.
C.It is ironic to help strangers in need when in nature.
D.We can obtain new knowledge when in nature.
