Before going abroad, I was very concerned about culture shock, but it turned out that I had a harder time dealing with reverse (逆向的) culture shock when returning ing back has been a tougher transition than expected. It’s not just about transitioning back to home life; it’s also about handling the strange situation of being a different person in the same old environment. I am most terrified of waking up in a few months and feeling like I’m the same person I was before I studied abroad.
This situation is especially strange with people who have known me for a long time, like my parents, who witnessed all my major life changes before this one. I didn’t realize how much I’d changed until I interacted with them and close friends. Despite only being away for three and a half months, I quickly noticed the differences between who I was before and who I am now. Over the past few weeks at home, I’ve been wondering how to maintain the positive changes and qualities gained from my semester abroad.
I’ve realized that surroundings and situations greatly influence mindset, and keeping a certain mindset while losing its corresponding (相对应的) environment is challenging. For instance, being in Madrid taught me to be more relaxed and stress-free. However, returning to Penn State with its demanding course load makes maintaining that mentality (心态) difficult. I’ve come to realize the problem that perpetual stress about school isn’t healthy, especially after experiencing a semester of travel, fun, and academic success. Therefore, I’ve decided to work hard and study as usual but occasionally give myself a break, and do what I can to avoid getting over-stressed about tests and assignments. This means I will put in effort when necessary in order to make sure I am always caught up or ahead of class material.
Coming home has been more challenging than expected, but I’m confident I’ll get through it in the next few weeks. Nevertheless, I’m determined to maintain the important lessons I learned about myself and others in Madrid.
4. What was the author’s biggest concern when returning home
A. Going back to his original self. B. Adapting to new surroundings.
C. Experiencing culture shock. D. Missing old acquaintances.
5. What did the author realize after returning home
A. He should make his family familiar with his positive changes.
B. He should change his mentality to care less about his study.
C. He should adapt his mindset to fit into the old learning environment.
D. He should apply himself to his study to stay ahead of class.
6. What does the underlined word “perpetual” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Current. B. Improper. C. Unnecessary. D. Continuous.
7. What is the passage mainly about
A. The sufferings of reverse culture shock. B. The reflections on personal growth.
C. The adaptations to new environments. D. The success in academic performance.

Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle though, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
9. What did Lingchong You find in his study
A. How sponges are exactly structured. B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment. D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
10. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive,
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
11. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Research into applications of bacteria.

Life is busy. We’re always expected to be productive and engaged, whether that’s with parenting, housework, or work. While taking time for small rewards can feel like a luxury (奢侈), the truth is that it is necessary for improving our mental health. A key psychological idea behind this is the Premack Principle, which explains why treating ourselves is more than a tendency; it’s a way to improve our daily lives.
In the 1960s, American psychologist David Premack developed a theory now known as Premack Principle. He explained that doing something you’re more likely to do can be a reward for doing something you don’t actually want to do. For instance, if you finish a task you’re not interested in, like cleaning the bathroom, you can treat yourself to something you like, such as watching an episode of your favorite TV show. This approach takes advantage of our natural need for fun to help us get through tasks we might not enjoy.
Recent studies keep showing that giving yourself rewards can help improve your work and happiness. For example, Woolley and Fishbach discovered that getting rewards right away can make you more motivated because it links the reward directly with the task. What’s interesting is that it’s not about how big the reward is but how quickly you get it that matters. Another study by Landry and others found it’s not the reward itself but rather how the reward makes people feel that helps them do their best. This makes sense because rewards boost our dopamine (多巴胺) levels, which plays a key role in how our brains feel pleasure.
The idea of giving ourselves “little treats” is not just about enjoying something; it’s proof of how positive reinforcement can change our behavior and make us feel better mentally. By carefully using the Premack Principle and rewarding ourselves, we can find more motivation (动机) to face challenges and lead a happier life. It’s okay torecognize and celebrate our efforts, big or small.
So, go ahead, give yourself that little treat. You’ve earned it.
12. What is the Premack Principle
A. A tool to work out a long-term plan.
B. Away to complete tasks effectively.
C. A means to make boring tasks enjoyable.
D. A theory to explain how rewards improve happiness.
13. According to Woolley and Fishbach, what helps to improve motivation
A. The type of tasks. B. The immediate reward.
C. The size of the reward. D. The level of dopamine.
14. What might be a “positive reinforcement” according to paragraph 4
A. A cleanup. B. Physical training.
C. Graduation ceremony. D. A favourite snack.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text
A The Importance of Productivity B. Motivation and Mental Health
C. The Premack Principle for Life D. Dopamine and the Brain’s Pleasure

I am Li Hua, chairman of the Students’ Union. Nowadays, the situation of wild animals is quite worrying. Many species are on the verge of extinction.
The main reasons for the decrease of wild animals are habitat loss caused by human activities and illegal hunting. To address this issue, we should protect their habitats and fight against illegal hunting.
Let’s take action now! Every one of us can contribute to the protection of wild animals. By doing so, we can create a better world for them and for ourselves.
