Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.
On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. “Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” He said. I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral of my sister, after her unexpected death.
He took the skirt and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me. “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you alive is a special occasion.”
I’m thinking about his words, and they’ve changed the way I live my life. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meet ngs. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. “Someday” and “one of these days” are losing their importance on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.
Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold back or save anything that would add laughter and color to our lives. “You might not be able to see it or feel it, but air pollution can vary a lot from one day to the next. Such fluctuations (变动) could lead to similar day-to-day changes in how a child’s brain functions,” says Jordi Sunyer. That’s what his work shows. He studies the link between pollutants and disease, and he is the head of a child health program at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, ISGlobal. It’s in Barcelona, Spain.
“Attention is important for school success,” Sunyer points out. It’s the first step in the learning process. Students who are easily distracted (使分心) will have a harder time focusing on information and remembering it. “We know there are many factors throughout the day that can cause attention to fluctuate, “Sunyer says. Feeling sleepy can make it harder to stay focused on a task, as well too hot or too cold. Sunyer had a prediction that air pollution could do this, too.
So his group studied 2,687 children. All were 7 to 10 years old. Each child attended one of 39 different Barcelona schools. Everyone took a computer test four times during the school year. It contained a number of tasks that required paying attention. For instance, the kids were asked to watch fish swim in a stream. They were told to click left or right depending on which direction the fish swam. “It’s a simple task, but when kids get bored and lose attention, they start to click the wrong answer, “Sunyer notes. The researchers also measured levels of air pollution on days when the kids had been tested. Then they compared the kids’ scores when pollution levels in Barcelona had been relatively high or low. And they showed that the kids scored slightly worse on days with higher levels of certain air pollutants.
Sunyer now is focused on helping schools in Barcelona identify ways to lower levels of the pollution to which kids are exposed.

D.It was too simple for kids to recognize the direction the fish swam.
64.What will be most probably talked about following the last paragraph
A.The variations of pollutants in Barcelona.
B.How to teach children to protect the environment.

Bogucki was a fireman from Alaska with a wish to discover his spiritual side in the wilderness While Alaska’s not short of the sort of land (地形) that can bring a person closer to nature, Bogucki chose a very different environment—Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. Aside from the packs of wild Australian dogs that regularly tear cows or sheep to death, the desert is home to the desert death adder.
Bogucki set off in July, with the intention of cycling and walking several hundred miles across the desert. Fifteen days later a group of tourists found his bike abandoned on a path, alongside footprints tracing into the wilderness. The discovery led to a huge search operation, but police found no trace of Bogucki. After 12 days they guessed he’d either hitchhiked (搭便车) his way back to civilization or died, and called off the operation.
The missing fireman’s parents weren’t willing to give up on him, and hired their own private man. Bogucki was finally found by a news team in a helicopter, 43 days after he’d set off. The members in the helicopter successfully flew Bogucki out.
Bogucki had survived by drinking muddy water and eating wild flowers. He had lost as much as 20 kilograms of weight, but was otherwise in surprisingly good condition. The doctor that treated him said he had nothing worse than a few scratches (刮痕), a far cry from the sunburn and blisters (水泡).
The number of days during which Bogucki was missing was 43, which was almost unbelievable. When asked whether he regretted his decision, Bogucki said, “I indeed suffered a lot but I have had my willpower tested too, which is of great value to the rest of my life.”
