二、阅读理解(本大题共5小题)
When it comes to perfect views, it really does take a village. Searching for the most camera-ready communities on the planet, we find four villages that fit the bill. Spend a few minutes there and you will realize that “quaint (古色古香的)” and “charming” aren’t just adjectives and that they are a way of life.
Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia
The village seems to disappear into the sky and the blue horizon. All the houses are painted white, the skies are clear, and the backdrop includes the Bay of Tunis which is only in a deeper shade of blue. It’s not surprising that the atmosphere here is a bit random, and it is also home to plenty of lively cafes and art galleries.
Wengen in Switzerland
Wonder how the world was before cars were invented Wengen, a Switzerland’s village, might just help you get the answer. Cars have been banned in this area for more than 100 years. Imagine seeing woods all around you, snow covered mountains, log cabins and the locals who have kept their Swiss culture undamaged.
Eze in France
France’s most attractive village is Eze. Seemingly frozen in time, Eze has managed to keep its old-world charm. It is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice, and today the village enjoys its rich heritage. The architecture here is so special that Walt Disney frequented this village for inspiration.
Bibury in England
Bibury was described by William Morris as “the most beautiful village in England” — known for its watercolor views. The 17th-century stone cottages and a still-working 1902 farm are some of the ancient village’s must-sees.
21.What are the tourists prevented doing in Wengen
A.Traveling around by car. B.Viewing woods everywhere.
C.Learning about Swiss culture. D.Appreciating snowy mountains.
22.Which village did Walt Disney often visit to get inspired
A.Eze in France. B.Bibury in England.
C.Wengen in Switzerland. D.Sidi Bou Said in Tunisi.
23.What do the four villages have in common
A.They have modern architecture.
B.They are all situated by the sea.
C.They have beautiful stone cottages.
D.They own old-world and amazing scenery.
A bunch of strangers showed up at the gym in the early morning of the last Sunday of April. A few athletes were already stretching (拉伸) their arms, but most of us could barely focus. As I was burning off last night’s wrong decision-a big meal, I spotted a poster about a gym’s 21-day workout challenge, and I immediately signed up. I always wanted to train fora marathon, so I considered this as my warm-up. Besides, I needed to stop being lazy and this was my chance to make a change.
It was easy to promise on paper, but three weeks of recommended exercise routines and diet restrictions (限制) wouldn’t be easy. I stuck to working out 30 minutes a day, and I didn’t disturb (干扰) my normal routine. Instead, I had to be faced with the tough work of being more creative in my spare time, thus breaking some bad habits.
Overcoming weaknesses with willpower was my goal for the next part of the journey. But the difficult part about making a challenge is realizing that “wanting” and “doing” are two very different things. Just like a career, you have to physically work for it rather than just wait for it to happen. But that’s hard. Throughout the 21 days, I often told myself that the challenge was meaningless and tried to sabotage myself from exercising. However, finally I overcame that negative thought and kept working out.
At the end of the challenge, I learned something even more important: Feeling the results is better than seeing them. I had fewer headaches and more energy, and was simply happier. I even felt a little smarter as I researched which foods were better for my body, and learned how to make healthier meals. I felt a sense of accomplishment (成就), too, because even though I wanted to give up dozens of times, I didn’t. I felt my waist got smaller and my arms got stronger, and I no longer felt guilty after having a piece of cake or a drink.
24.What was the author’s wrong decision
A.Going to the gym early.
B.Training for a marathon.
C.Eating a lot the previous night.
D.Stopping being lazy for a change.
25.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.Some of the author’s bad habits.
B.Some ways of the author’s killing his spare time.
C.The importance of sticking to the normal daily routine.
D.The difficulty of the author’s keeping on with the workout plan.
26.What does the underlined word “sabotage” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.stop. B.hear. C.improve. D.recognize.
27.What did the author learn from the workout challenge
A.Eating healthy food is more important than exercising.
B.Overcoming a challenge could bring good feelings to him.
C.It’s more important to see what he likes than just feel it.
D.There was no need to feel guilty about things he disliked to do.
To the human ears, a field of flowers is silent, except the noise of birds and insects. To certain animal ears, however, a field of flowers is full of conversation. Now, scientists have discovered that plants actually make noise as a way of communicating. In other words, they talk!
It has long been known that plants communicate when they are stressed. You need only watch a houseplant to realize that a plant lowers its head when it needs water, or turns yellow when it has been watered too much. Some plants also send out a bad smell when stressed to try and stop insects from taking advantage of their stressed state and eating them up.
Now, a new study that was published in Cell and conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed, they also make sounds, like talking.
According to NoCamels, plants send out sounds at frequencies (频率) between 40 to 80 kilohertz — out of the range (范围) of human ears, but within the range of some animals. “Bats (蝙蝠) make sounds in these ranges all the time, and mice, dogs and cats can partly hear within it,” Dr. Lilach Hadany, one of the authors of the study, told NoCamels.
What is surprising about Hadany’s study is that the researchers have managed to understand and group the sounds that plants make for the first time. Plants that are not stressed make about one noise per hour, but plants that are stressed, thirsty, or injured make many hundreds of sounds per hour; and each of these sounds seems to show the certain type of stress the plant is under.
This type of information could be key for agriculture (农业). Knowing what sounds their plants are making will help farmers determine whether their plants are in danger or disease and allow them to make the necessary changes to allow their plants to grow well.
28.Why do some plants send out a bad smell
A.To show they hate birds. B.To say they are in need of water.
C.To protect themselves from danger. D.To tell people to stop watering them.
29.Which of the following can hear plants most clearly
A.Humans. B.Cats. C.Dogs. D.Bats.
30.What does the last paragraph focus on
A.The big problems farmers have been facing.
B.The possible application of the new study.
C.The ways for farmers to learn plants’ languages.
D.The points needed to be improved for the study.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Plants Change Their Looks to Ask for Help
B.Necessary Changes Are Made to Agriculture
C.Plants Can Make Sounds to Communicate
D.A Field of Plants Is Silent to the Human Ears
Due to social events in recent years, the relationship between social media and teenagers mental health has been under heated discussion.
On Sept. 30, a British court decided that content on social media platforms led to the depression (抑郁) of 14-year-old Molly Russell. Russell interacted with 2,100 posts related to pessimistic (悲观) and self-harm in the six months, leading up to her depression, reported the Observer website.
The correlation has also been proved by science. A study in 2019 showed that the frequent use of social media by teenagers can lead to a decrease in their mental health.
So, how can we make sure that teenagers won’t get hurt while using social media Chan,18, from the University of Macao shared her experience. Chan said that she one cam e across short videos romanticizing (浪漫化) mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. She immediately reported them to the platform.
But she said that the users’ power to control videos is still limited. “It is ultimately the responsibility of the social media platforms to get rid of content that is potentially harmful.” She also noticed that the age of social media users has become increasingly younger. Society should pay attention to this, she said. “Since it’s not possible to cut off access to social media for younger users, why not introduce a ‘supervision mode’ (监管模式) with which parents can regulate the content to be viewed by teenagers beforehand ” she said.
Wu Chengyu, 18, studies at Tianjin Experimental High School. He said that several years ago he came across a game that attracts teenagers to self-abuse and depression. He quickly chose to ignore it so he wouldn’t be influenced. This is the same way he reacts when exposed to negative content on social media.
In Wu’s opinion, teenagers today should improve their social media literacy (素养), telling real from fake and good from bad. “Also, everyone can be a content creator on social media.” he said. “We should all strengthen our awareness of ethics”.
32.What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court
A.Her interaction with others online.
B.Negative information on social media platforms.
C.Short videos she watched on the Internet.
D.Her addiction to online posts.
33.Which of the following statements does Chan probably agree with
A.A supervision mode ought to be introduced by parents.
B.The number of younger social media users should be limited.
C.It is the responsibility of the society to romanticize mental illnesses.
D.Parents should monitor the content to be viewed by teenagers in advance.
34.Who should be ultimately responsible for removing negative content according to Chan
A.Parents. B.Schools.
C.Social media platforms. D.Content creators.
35.What does Wu suggest teenagers should do
A.Use social media wisely. B.Reduce social media usage.
C.Stay away from online games. D.Learn more about social media.
Young people today can download an app on their phone in seconds. They can quickly make things like videos and music. 36 They’re known as digital natives. It is a term for people who have grown up using digital technology.
But according to teachers, there’s one thing many of them can’t do very well: type on a keyboard. The 22-year-old singer Billie Eilish said this year that she never learned to type, and now she regrets it. According to the US Department of Education, there has been a big decrease in the number of courses that teach typing in the classroom. 37
The department said that in 2000, 44% of students had taken a typing course before finishing high school. 38 In August, The Wall Street Journal spoke to a number of young adults and teenagers about typing. Many said they have to take their time while typing on a computer keyboard, looking carefully to find the letters they want.
39 It involves using all fingers to type without looking at the keyboard. However, young people today often lack this ability. It’s said one of the reasons young people are slower at typing is that they do a lot of their schoolwork on smartphones or tablets.
Some teachers think young people’s typing speeds might cause them problems when they’re writing long assignments at university, or working in a job that needs them to type a lot. 40 But experts still say being able to touch type can help people find better job opportunities.
A.One thing has changed.
B.It might not be needed for all jobs.
C.There are some excellent typing programs online.
D.They might even be able to create an app themselves!
E.However, by 2019, only 2.5% of students had taken such a course.
F.That’s despite a big increase in the use of technology in classrooms.
G.In older generations, touch typing was considered an important skill.

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information. Then I saw the date-1990, and the signature-Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.
Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him I'm still looking for him,” she said and tears began to well up in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”
When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, that's mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this afternoon.”
“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet.” I said. The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter ” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read.” I replied. He suddenly became excited. “Beatrice You know where she is How is she Please tell me,” he begged. “She's fine. She has been looking for you.” I said softly.
He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world. I've always missed her.”
