Whether you plan to head out to the theater or binge from the couch, our critics have gathered together their favorite films of 2024. Have at it!
Flow
Near the outset of Gints’ exquisite animated feature, a grey cat is swept up by a flood, finding itself stuck with a few other animals on a tiny ark of sorts. Featuring cross-species cooperation in the face of a climate crisis, the filmmaker works miracles with computer graphics sending what look like hand-drawn animals into photorealistic backgrounds.
Article 20
Article 20 is a thought-provoking film. It focuses on a legal clause and unfolds a series of events and conflicts around it. The story delves into the impact of this article on different individuals and society, exploring themes of justice, rights, and human nature. With its engaging plot and profound meaning, it prompts the audience to reflect on various aspects of the law and life.
The Room Next Door
In Pedro Almodovar’s latest, Martha (Tilda Swinton) and Ingrid (Julianne Moore) are long lost friends who reconnect after Martha is diagnosed with a terminal illness. The director has adapted Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through for his first English-language feature, and none of his renowned sensibilities are lost in translation.
Tuesday
Julia Louis-Dreyfus gives a career-best performance as Zora, a single mother living with her terminally ill daughter Tuesday. One day, Tuesday is visited by death in the form of a talking parrot who can change size, voiced in a magnificent baritone by Arinze Kene. When was the last time you used a telephone box I mean to make an actual phone call — not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago, right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was…2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more ”young professional”.
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly I was locked outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that then are no longer any public telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turn into a “mini community library”: any passer-by can “borrow” a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the “library” opened, I didn’t bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be stuffed full of cheese love stories. Then I noticed folk conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly no longer be able to connect me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.

6.What do we know about the “mini community library”
A.It provides phone service for free. B.Anyone can contribute to its collection.
C.It is popular among young readers. D.Books must be returned within a month.
7.Why did the author start to use the “library”
A.He wanted to borrow some love stories.
B.He was encouraged by a close neighbour.

If carbon dioxide(CO2) were a politician, it would be worried about its bad press. This greenhouse gas is the primary pollutant responsible for global warming. Scientists, leaders, and activists are trying to stop its production. This gas, however, also plays a key role in life on Earth.
Carbon helps form the protein and DNA found in living things. In the atmosphere, it combines with two oxygen atoms (原子) to form carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis (光合作用) . In the process, plants use energy from the sun to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. In return, plants give off oxygen. As carbon dioxide concentrations increase in the atmosphere, scientists are trying to employ photosynthesis to promote plant growth. Laboratory studies show a higher concentration of the gas is making some plants grow more quickly in certain conditions, but in the wild and on outdoor farms the overall benefit is unclear. In the Netherlands, some commercial greenhouses are experimenting with ways to send carbon dioxide released from industry into greenhouses along a particular way where plants use the extra gas as fertilizer (肥料).
The first person to assume the existence of carbon dioxide was 16th-century Belgian scientist Jan Baptist van Helmont. After coal was burned, he noted, the weight of the remains was lower than the coal’s initial weight, which means some mass had been lost in the process. He was the first scientist to recognize different gases present in the air we breathe. It wasn’t until 1896 that Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius linked the carbon dioxide released from burning coal and oil to atmospheric warming.
Yet, despite its being plentiful in the atmosphere, we have been light on commercially produced carbon dioxide because of rising energy costs. As a result, carbonated drink (碳酸饮料) companies have had to raise prices or reduce production.
8.What function does CO2 have according to paragraph 2
A.Saving energy. B.Increasing fertilizer.
C.Supporting life. D.Commercializing agriculture.
9.Why is Jan Baptist van Helmont mentioned
A.To clarify the origins of CO2. B.To tell an unknown story.
C.To explain the applications of CO2. D.To show an early discovery.
10.What problem do carbonated drink companies face
A.Commercial CO2 is in short supply. B.Sales of their drinks are extremely poor.
C.It’s difficult to increase their production. D.There’s too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
11.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Climate Change: Affected by CO2 B.CO2: Both an Enemy and Friend
C.Greenhouse Gas: Having a Bad Press D.Carbon: Misunderstood Substance
It is a well-known fact that not all animals have the ability to instantly recognize themselves in the mirror. However, a few animals can recognize themselves, such as dolphins, Asian elephants, and of course humans! A species of fish with the ability to recognize itself in the mirror is commonly known as the cleaner fish.
Found in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, cleaner fish exist as “cleaning stations” for other fish (known as hosts). They “clean” the dead skin and parasites (寄生虫) from other fish. This is of benefit for cleaner fish, which get a meal, as well as for the other fish species, which are freed from parasites. Such a type of relationship is known as mutualism.
Recently, a group of scientists in Japan found that cleaner fish might have the ability to identify (识别) themselves in photographs! It was already known that cleaner fish could recognize themselves in mirrors and would attack unknown cleaner fish. So, the team wanted to test whether the same was seen in the case of photos as well.
Thus, the team of scientists showed four types of photos to the cleaner fish. The first type was a photo of themselves, while the second involved an unknown cleaner fish. The third type of picture was a photo of an unknown cleaner fish with the fish’s own face edited onto it. The fourth type of photo included its own body but with the face of an unknown cleaner fish.
They found that cleaner fish attacked only those photographs which did not have their own faces. This result was similar to the ability of humans to recognize each other based on their faces and not by their bodies.
This study suggests that self-awareness may be far more widespread among animals than scientists once thought. People shouldn’t be surprised that fish could have a sense of self given that they have already been shown to have complex behavior including tool use and planning.
12.What does the underlined word “mutualism” probably mean in paragraph 2
A.A host-parasite relationship. B.A master-servant relationship.
C.Dependence on each other. D.Beneficial cleaning behavior.
13.What is the new finding about cleaner fish
A.They can identify themselves in the mirror.
B.They can recognize themselves in the images.
C.They have the same sense of self as humans.
D.They have a better sense of self than some animals.
14.Which types of photos would cleaner fish most probably attack
A.The first and second types. B.The second and fourth types.
C.The first and third types. D.The second and third types.
15.What is the author’s attitude toward the study
A.Unclear. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned.
Food waste is a major issue in agriculture and in homes. If you grow your own food, the last thing you want is to let your hard work go to waste. 16 It begins with the plants you choose, and goes right through to preservation (保存) of your harvests. Here are some tips for you.
When planning a food-producing garden, it’s very important to choose the right plants for the right places. Waste is far more likely to happen if you are growing plants that are not suited to the climate, soil, and growing conditions. 17 Make sure they do not just provide food today, but can also adapt to the changing climate. If you make the right plant choices, you are likely to get a good harvest.
Sometimes cooperation is key. People may often have more seeds (种子) than they really need, particularly in small gardens. However, seeds are usually only viable (能存活的) for a certain length of time. 18 And you can also share skills and knowledge with each other.
19 You might, for example, grow some strawberries inside a greenhouse, with others outdoors. Those grown under cover will typically be ready to harvest a little earlier. Or you can grow different varieties of plants.
Once you have grown your crops, it is important to be ready to preserve what needs to be preserved. This can happen in a range of different ways. You can freeze, pickle (腌制), or can a wide range of garden produce. 20
A.Communities can come together to harvest crops.
B.Many common weeds or flowers can be sources of food.
C.Preventing food waste in the garden is a long term process.
D.So think about how you can create good systems in your garden.
E.Sharing them between households can avoid wasting their potential.
F.Make sure you know how to do so properly when harvest time comes.
G.Scheduling different harvest periods for certain crops can help avoid waste.

On a trip to California, my family stopped for lunch. As we walked toward the entrance to the restaurant, a man, with messy beard and dirty hair, jumped up from a bench and opened the door for us. Regardless of his appearance, he greeted us in a friendly way.
Once inside, my daughters whispered, “Mom, he smells.” After we ordered our lunch, I explained , telling the kids to look beyond the dirt. We then watched other customers approach the restaurant but many ignored him. Seeing this rudeness truly upset me. The day I became a mother, I had resolved to set a good example for my children. Yet sometimes when things didn’t go right, being a good example was tough. When our meal arrived, I realized I had left the car-sick pills in the truck. With the windiest trip ahead, the kids needed them, so I excused myself from the meal and went to get them.
Just then, the “doorman” was opening the door for couple. They rushed past him without even acknowledging his presence. Letting them in first, I said a loud “thank you” to him as I exited. He seemed a bit surprised, and then smiled back me, unnoticed, even showing a little shyness and bitterness.
When I returned, we talked a bit, He said he was not allowed inside unless he purchased food. I went back and told my family his story. Then I asked our waitress to add one soup and sandwich. The kids looked puzzled as we had already eaten, but when I said the other was for the “doorman”, they smiled.

When it was time to continue our trip, I noticed the “ doorman” enjoying his meal. Upon seeing me, he stood up and thanked me heartily. He then extended his hand for a handshake and I gratefully accepted. I suddenly noticed the tears in his eyes—tears of gratitude. What happened next drew great astonishment: I gave the “doorman” a hug. But he pulled away, with tears streaming down his face.
Para. 2
Back in truck, I turned to my kids. It seemed that kids learnt a lot from what had happened just now. They were lost in thought deeply. While we can’t choose many things in life, we can choose when to show gratitude. Being thankful for the unfortunate ones, we can bring warmth to them; showing smiles to the helpful ones, we can spread the kindness to more people in need.
