If you thought that your child’s academic performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of multiple factors, everything from the child’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major, mostly ignored, influencing factor is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.
According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training did not have the same result on the brain.
The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety.
It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.
In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted (推动). Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable choice but as an important educational concern.
4.Which of the following exercises is best for learning and memory
A.Regular aerobic exercise. B.Balance exercise.
C.Muscle exercise. D.Resistance training.
5.How does exercise influence thinking indirectly
A.By releasing growth factors in large numbers.
B.By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.
C.By affecting the survival of new brain cells.
D.By improving a person’s mood and sleep quality.
6.What does the underlined word “dispensable” mean in the last paragraph
A.Unique. B.Unnecessary. C.Unusual. D.Universal.
7.What is the passage mainly about
A.Mental health should never be ignored.
B.Physical education class is really a good option.
C.Exercise may bring about good academic grades.
D.Different exercises have different results on the brain.
Have you ever made a mistake Mistakes make us feel silly but everyone makes them. Even scientists, who often appear to know exactly what they are doing, are guilty of having accidents. The truth is, mistakes can often make science exciting because they can open your eyes to possibilities that you might never have considered.
Sometimes scientists discover a hidden purpose for an invention that already exists. In the 1940s, American engineer Percy Spencer worked on a radar magnetron (雷达磁控智) to find ships. While he was working, the machine was pointing towards his pocket due to his carelessness. After a while, he noticed that a chocolate bar he had put there had melted (m). Confused, he tried to see if anything else would melt, Spencer put an egg in front of the machine and after a few seconds, the egg exploded. Once he realised that energy from the machine could cook food fast, he designed a box to trap the radiation inside. From that the microwave oven (微波炉) came into being.
Ice lollies (冰棍) are an example of a delicious mistake. They were invented when Frank Epperson, a boy in the US, placed a wooden stick in a glass of juice. The juice froze around the stick and when he took it out the next day, he realised what a good idea it was to have something by which to hold a frozen sweet treat. He decided to call his creation a Popsicle.
Actually, almost all inventors have something in common. You never know what you’ll discover if you try new things ― and it won’t always be what you planned. As long as you keep an open mind, you might find the next big thing.
8.According to the first paragraph, mistakes ________.
A.can push forward scientific development
B.can test if a person is silly or smart
C.relate closely to our sense of guilt
D.come from small daily accidents
9.What was a key to Spencer’s invention of the microwave oven
A.He used a radar magnetron to find ships.
B.A chocolate bar melted in the machine.
C.The magnetron pointed to his pocket.
D.He exploded an egg inside the box he made.
10.What did Frank do to create ice lollies
A.He left a stick in juice. B.He tasted a sweet treat.
C.He added sweets to water. D.He placed fruit in a glass
11.According to the author, what do most inventors have in common
A.They keep an open mind about people around them.
B.They learn from their mistakes to work efficiently.
C.They gain success through repeated failures.
D.They see possibilities in their mistakes.
We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start
“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important,” says secondary school teacher David Earl.
Your kid will probably have some idea of the terms “growth” and “fixed mindset”. Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help your kid prepare for closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters by encouraging them to embrace them and understand that none of them is failure. Remind them of things they’ve overcome, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.
Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills, including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking. So getting your children to think about those skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.
Good grades and passing examinations may seem like the most important thing to your kid right now, but try to encourage them to also think of longer-term goals. By thinking of a long-term goal, you may be able to find areas they need to improve.
Thinking about the future can be challenging, but it’s important that your kid understands that the next step is just that one small step. It doesn’t have to be anything as huge as what career to pursue or which course to take. This is a team effort: Ask teachers, friends, or turn to experts for tips.
12.What does the growth mindset stress
A.A child’s ability can be improved. B.Success comes only from good grades.
C.One’s intelligence stays unchanged. D.Children should avoid challenges to succeed.
13.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 4
A.Ignore. B.Measure. C.Perform. D.Accept.
14.Which of the following might the writer agree with
A.Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B.It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’ future careers.
C.It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D.Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
15.Who is the above passage mainly intended for
A.Children. B.Parents. C.Employers. D.Teachers.
As a writer who shares his journey online, I’m often asked how to begin a writing journey. Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, but I do understand the curiosity of starting something new. Here are some tips which I think could help.
Start small.
Keep a journal or notebook for short writing exercises or ideas. These small pieces can serve as practice or inspiration for larger projects later on. 16 You’ll want to look back one day and see how much progress you’ve made and how your initial ideas shaped your current skills and creativity.
Write regularly and from experience.
The more you write, the better you’ll become. Whether it’s fiction, essays, or poetry, draw from your own experiences or observations. Writing consistently builds not only your technical skills but also your confidence in expressing ideas. 17 It is constant writing that often transforms thoughts into something tangible and meaningful.
Challenge yourself to explore new techniques.
18 Maybe experiment with a different narrative style. I once took on a challenge to write flash fiction every day for a month, and it pushed me in unexpected and rewarding ways. By exploring unfamiliar territory, you might discover hidden talents or creative passions you never knew existed.
19
Communicate with other writers as much as possible. In this way I posted my writing online and have connected with some of the most supportive readers. Getting constructive criticism and advice can help you grow while building a community of fellow writers.
Your writing journey won’t be a straight line. 20 Keep writing and stay patient. In time, the dedication will pay off, and you’ll see the rewards of living a writer’s life.
A.Share to get feedback.
B.Support other readers.
C.A straight-line thing is often favored by fiction writers.
D.Stepping out of your comfort zone is essential for growth.
E.You’ll face challenges, and sometimes you’ll doubt yourself.
F.Don’t throw away your early writings, even if they seem rough.
G.Just like a muscle, writing skills grow stronger with frequent use.

五、书面表达(本大题共1小题)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Some kids play sports, while others are computer talents. But for me, I have the spelling bee. Every day after school, with a dictionary, I tried to study the spelling of every word. I wanted to win the bee, so that I could defeat my archenemy (劲敌), Nathan.
Nathan was my deskmate and he thought he was a good speller, but he didn’t even study words. He just read tons of science and math books. How could he be a speller in that way I bet if he was given a literature word like “judgment”, he would be out in the first round of the contest.
Last Friday was the day for the spelling bee. Since it started after lunch, all I did in the morning was staring at the clock and wondering how seconds could possibly pass so slowly. Math was the first period, and Nathan was on top of the world when Mr. Stephen said we were learning algebra (代数) today. Mr. Stephen wrote lots of equations with letters on the whiteboard. To me, it all sounded like nonsense. “Letters are for words. How could we use letters in that way!” I complained. Nathan turned his head and looked at me. “Letters are for math, too!” he said. “Letters are all over math.” I looked angrily at him, “You will find out what letters are for this afternoon.”
Finally, the competition came! “It’s the big day!” Ms. Hawking announced brightly. She made us form a circle and explained the rule — “miss one word, and you’re out”. Then she looked down to read words from her list. My class was full of bad spellers. After three rounds, there were only Nathan and I.
Nathan’s next word was “magician.” “M-A-G-I-C-I-A-N, magician.” He got it, but he looked uncertain the whole time he was spelling it. I smiled, confident of my upcoming victory. I believed that he was definitely unfamiliar with literature words. “Your word is ‘algebra’,” Ms. Hawking said to me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Hearing that, I suddenly became nervous.

My heart sank. “If Nathan gets the next word right, he’ll win,” I thought with my palms sweating. “Nathan, next is ‘judgment’,” continued Ms. Hawking. Hearing the literature word, I let out a sigh of relief secretly. Nathan would definitely get it wrong. Standing next to the whiteboard, I was so busy picturing how Nathan made a mistake that I didn’t notice he finished his turn. “J-U-D-G-M-E-N-T. Judgment.”
“You spell ‘judgment’ correctly. Congratulations, Nathan!” cheered Ms. Hawking. I was staggering back to my seat when I felt a hand seizing my arm. It was Nathan. “You did a really good job,” he smiled and held out his hand to shake mine. I went red with embarrassment and regret, trying my best to hold back my tears. “Sorry, letters are for math too,” I said. Nathan smiled widely, “Letters are for everything.” He told me if he did not read science fiction, he would not know the literature word “judgment”. Only then did I realize it’s time to change my judgment.
