For anyone who loves food, drink and travel, Bookalokal is definitely worth learning about when planning your next dining experience.
What is Bookalokal
Bookalokal was started in Brussels in 2013 and now has hosts in 46 countries. It is a global social dining group that serves as a fun way for people to connect through food and drink all around the world. The guests of Bookalokal feature travelers, locals or even people settling into a new city. The hosts of Bookalokal are those who enjoy meeting new people and sharing their homes as well as their love for food through a scheduled dining experience. Bookalokal also uses unique locations for group dinners, birthday parties, business dinners, or reunions! Its users can host their dining services in a variety of places, ranging from a city apartment or townhouse to a small café, as long as the host owns and runs the place independently. On the other hand, guests pay between $30 and $50 to explore the local food culture, creating an unforgettable experience.
How does Bookalokal work
Bookalokal allows you to search for the type of host you want, what kind of food you want and/or dining experience and book it — easy as that! When a host decides to create a scheduled dining experience, they pick a date as well as the minimum and maximum number of guests they want to treat. Hosts are also able to create unscheduled dining experiences, which means guests can request an experience on the date that works best for them.
Whether you are interested in a five-course tasting menu, or joining in a beer tasting, Bookalokal has you covered.
1.What is the aim of Bookalokal
A.To explore the local sports culture. B.To get people connected through food.
C.To enable tourists to book a room. D.To help hotels to lower running costs.
2.Which is a rule about the place for hosting Bookalokal dining services
A.It has rooms for short breaks. B.It’s set near a city apartment.
C.It allows guests to hold a party. D.It’s owned and run by the host.
3.What can guests do with Bookalokal
A.Get great dining experiences. B.Sharpen their cooking skills.
C.Find a well-paid job in a hotel. D.Attend a group dinner for free.
I’m making dinner in the kitchen when my 2-year-old shouts for more food. Then, I hear loud crying. My middle son has hit my oldest, and now both are calling for me in tears.
“What happened now ” I shout in a loud voice. “Come on, guys! I’m trying to cook dinner. Why can’t we just play nicely ”
I want to stay calm, but fail. I’m burning to shout at everyone for everything. Then, guilt (愧疚) hits me. They’re just kids. I ask them to talk and say sorry.
This was my daily life. Small things made me so angry. I shouted at my kids for normal mistakes. I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t know how to stop.
Luckily enough, my mum had told me about her recent experience of seeing a therapist (心理咨询师) to work through bad memories from her childhood and how she felt freer and better than she had ever been. I signed up to see the therapist. He helped me process my painful memories. The therapy showed me that my anger came from my past. When my kids misbehaved, I wasn’t just reacting to them — I was reacting to old wounds.
My therapist told me that I had to learn to notice when something in my body changed, like a pause in my breath, my hands shaking in the air. These signs warned me that I was about to lose control. I learned ways to stay calm, like rocking my feet against the floor or taking a deep breath.
Over time, I shout less. My kids laugh more. They’re more at ease and less scared that I’m going to go off on them. They seem more confident, too, and able to express their feelings.
I’m still learning. And that’s what parenthood is all about: improving over time and doing the best we can with what we’ve got.
4.How did the author react at first when hearing her kids crying before
A.She felt a sense of guilt. B.She got angry and shouted.
C.She punished her oldest kid. D.She managed to stay calm.
5.Why did the author sign up to see the therapist
A.Her kids asked her to follow the advice. B.She could talk to her mother in person.
C.She badly needed a job to feed a family. D.Her mother benefited from the therapy.
6.What does the author think of the therapy
A.Creative. B.Workable. C.Expensive. D.Misleading.
7.What message does the author want to deliver in the last paragraph
A.Parents must be strict with their children.
B.Teaching kids to act well is parents’ calling.
C.Parenthood is a journey of learning and improving.
D.Cooking meals is the most important task for parents.
If you’ve ever played on a sports team or been to gym class, you probably know the practice. First, you do some warm-ups. Then you stretch (拉伸). Exercises and activities follow. At the end of the exercise, you do more stretches.
For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better, and suffer fewer injuries. From the health club to the football field, everywhere you look, people stretch.
Now research suggests that stretching may not do your body as much good as people thought. After reviewing more than 350 scientific studies, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that stretching may not cut the chance of injury.
“There is not enough evidence (证据) to show that stretching is effective,” says Stephen Thacker, director of the CDC’s epidemiology program in Atlanta, Ga. “Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.” Thacker points to professional baseball players as an example. They all do stretches before a game. Yet baseball players have one of the highest rates of injury in any sport.
To understand why stretching may be a bad idea, it helps to know how muscles (肌肉) work. It all starts with orders from the brain. Special cells called neurons carry electrical messages from the brain through the nervous system to the muscles you want to activate. As soon as the messages get to their targets, the muscles react. When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers. It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them.
Stretching before you exercise is particularly risky, experts say. Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.
8.What is the common belief about stretching among coaches and gym teachers
A.It improves performance. B.It should be avoided in matches.
C.It is only useful for athletes. D.It may increase the risk of injuries.
9.What does Thacker want to explain by mentioning professional baseball players
A.The downside of stretching. B.The purpose of the CDC’s study.
C.The value of the group game. D.The necessity of doing warm-ups.
10.What do experts recommend for warming up before exercise
A.Focusing on your thoughts. B.Stretching as much as possible.
C.Following the coach’s order. D.Starting with slow movements.
11.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.How Can We Pick an Activity B.Is Warming up Necessary for Us
C.Why Do Athletes Do Stretches D.Does Stretching Help Workouts
In general, sharks are known for eating almost anything. But in French Polynesia, blacktip reef sharks that eat food from tourists are not as healthy, researchers report in Animal Conservation.
Around the world, tourists who want to see sharks in their natural habitat may lure them with food. A particularly popular location for shark feeding is Mo’orea, a small island near Tahiti, where tourists gather in boats to see the sharks up close, throwing them food.
At the Island Research Center and Environmental Observatory in Mo’orea, Johann Mourier, a marine behavioral ecologist, was studying the behavior of sharks around the island. Since the blacktip reef sharks around Mo’orea tend to be homebodies — sometimes spending ten years or more on one reef — Mourier and his team wondered how sharks living at sites visited by generous tourists might be influenced by all the attention.
From May 2008 through May 2011, the team caught and tested 117 sharks at different locations around the island. Five locations were feeding sites, while 12 were non-feeding. The researchers drew blood from the sharks and analyzed (分析) various biochemicals. Mourier’s study found that the volume (体积) of red blood cells and glucose (葡萄糖) — an overall measure of health condition — was lower for sharks at the feeding sites.
“These sharks have a decrease in the glucose and red blood cells in the blood, which means that the food quality was worse at feeding sites,” says Mourier. “The leftovers offered by humans are like junk food, and don’t appear to have good quality as the sharks’ normal diet.”
“This study represents a significant advancement in our understanding of shark health,” says Mourier. “These results are particularly important given that shark feeding practices are often poorly controlled, leading to numerous challenges.” The researchers suggest that making rules on the types of foods given to sharks in places with widespread feeding activities may be necessary to protect the health of the sharks.
12.What does the underlined word “lure” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Save. B.Alarm. C.Attract. D.Escape.
13.What did the study mainly explore
A.What types of food sharks generally prefer. B.How tourist feeding affects sharks’ health.
C.Why tourists rush to Mo’orea to feed sharks. D.How long a shark tends to stay in one place.
14.What can we know about the food sharks receive from tourists
A.It is harmful to sharks. B.It gives sharks more energy.
C.It is sharks’ normal diet. D.It makes sharks picky eaters.
15.What can be inferred about shark feeding practices from the last paragraph
A.They must be totally stopped. B.They help sharks avoid hunger.
C.They need better management. D.They are particularly important.
Whether you want to start a vegetable garden or make your garden bigger, you have choices to make. The first decision concerns just how you’ll set up your garden. 16 . To help you start planning your garden, let’s look at some techniques for growing vegetables in any size space.
17
Planting diroctly in the ground is a traditional way. First, you remove grass and weeds. Then, you mix compost (堆肥) into the soil to help plants grow. This method is cheap and needs less watering. But it takes more work to maintain. Weeds grow quickly, and animals like rabbits can eat the plants. Also, the soil takes longer to warm up in spring.
Raised bed gardening
Raised beds are boxes filled with soil. They warm up faster in spring and have fewer weeds, allowing for extra-early planting. You can plant more vegetables in a small space, and the soil stays soft because you don’t step on it. However, building raised beds is costly. 18 .
Straw bale (稻草捆) gardening
In this method, plants grow in straw bales. 19 . Perfect for growing vegetables and flowers that live only one year, bales can be placed in a driveway, yard, or any small place that gets lots of sun.
Container (容器) gardening
20 . The advantage of this method is that it turns any sunny space into a place to grow food. On the downside, there is an initial cost of containers (depending on the types of containers you choose). Plus containers dry out quicker than garden beds in the hot summer sun. You have to pay very close attention to watering.
A.Starting your personal gardening
B.The in-ground vegetable gardening
C.It is quick to set up and works well in small spaces
D.And the right choice depends on your space, time and goals
E.For many people, it sounds difficult to find some proper containers
F.To save money, you can use wood or stones to create free-formed beds
G.The easiest way to start food gardening is to use planters and other containers

It was an extremely hot summer afternoon when I arrived in a new city for work. The air was filled with heat as I stepped off the train into a crowded station I’d never been to before. My blouse was already clinging (粘着) to my back, which made every step feel heavier. All over the place were hurried footsteps and rolling suitcases (行李箱). I was very tired after the journey and all I could think about was getting to the hotel to cool off, and prepare for the meetings I had scheduled.
Pulling my heavy suitcase, I followed the signs toward the taxi stand. As I reached into my handbag to get my wallet, a wave of dread (惊恐) washed over me—I couldn’t find it. In shock, I checked every pocket—once, twice, three times. My wallet wasn’t there. My mind raced as I tried to recall when I had last seen it. Had I left it on the train or somewhere
Taking a deep breath, I opened my suitcase and checked every corner, hoping that I had just overlooked it. Sweat was pouring off me as my search turned up nothing. The realization hit me hard: my wallet was gone. Not only did it hold my cash, but also my credit cards.
I was in an unfamiliar city, without cash, cards, or any way to buy a bottle of water to ease my dry throat, let alone pay for a ride to the hotel. The helplessness of the situation settled over me as I stood still near the taxi stand, unsure of what to do next.
“Are you okay ” A voice cut through my thoughts.
I looked up to see a man in his early thirties, dressed in an old T-shirt and jeans, carrying a small bag. His face was kind, and his expression showed concern.

【答案】12.C 13.B 14.A 15.C
根据划线单词上下文“Around the world, tourists who want to see sharks in their natural habitat may lure them with food. A particularly popular location for shark feeding is Mo’orea, a small island near Tahiti, where tourists gather in boats to see the sharks up close, throwing them food.
根据文章第一段“But in French Polynesia, blacktip reef sharks that eat food from tourists are not as healthy, researchers report in Animal Conservation.(但在法属波利尼西亚,食用游客投喂食物的黑鳍礁鲨身体状况却并不健康。)”,第三段“Since the blacktip reef sharks around Mo’orea tend to be homebodies — sometimes spending ten years or more on one reef — Mourier and his team wondered how sharks living at sites visited by generous tourists might be influenced by all the attention.(由于莫雷阿岛周围的黑鳍礁鲨往往喜欢待在一个地方——有时会在同一处礁石区域生活十年甚至更久——Mourier和他的团队想知道,生活在那些受到慷慨游客光顾的地方的鲨鱼,会受到这些关注怎样的影响。)”
根据文章第五段““These sharks have a decrease in the glucose and red blood cells in the blood, which means that the food quality was worse at feeding sites,” says Mourier. “The leftovers offered by humans are like junk food, and don’t appear to have good quality as the sharks’ normal diet.”(“这些鲨鱼血液中的葡萄糖和红细胞数量有所减少,这意味着在投喂点的食物质量更差,”Mourier说,“人类提供的残羹剩饭就像垃圾食品,看起来并不像鲨鱼的正常饮食那样有优质的营养成分。”)” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段““This study represents a significant advancement in our understanding of shark health,” says Mourier. “These results are particularly important given that shark feeding practices are often poorly controlled, leading to numerous challenges.” The researchers suggest that making rules on the types of foods given to sharks in places with widespread feeding activities may be necessary to protect the health of the sharks.(“这项研究在我们对鲨鱼健康状况的理解方面取得了重大进展,”Mourier说,“鉴于鲨鱼投喂行为往往缺乏有效管理,引发了许多问题,这些研究结果就显得尤为重要。”

根据上文“Whether you want to start a vegetable garden or make your garden bigger, you have choices to make. The first decision concerns just how you’ll set up your garden.(无论你是想开辟一个蔬菜园,还是想把现有的菜园扩大,你都需要做出一些选择。首要的决定与你将如何规划你的菜园有关。)”可知,上文提到要建立花园首先要做决定,即如何建立花园。选项D“And the right choice depends on your space, time and goals(而正确的选择取决于你的空间、时间和目标。)”
根据下文“Planting directly in the ground is a traditional way. First, you remove grass and weeds. Then, you mix compost (堆肥) into the soil to help plants grow. This method is cheap and needs less watering. But it takes more work to maintain. Weeds grow quickly, and animals like rabbits can eat the plants. Also, the soil takes longer to warm up in spring.(直接在地里种植是一种传统的方式。
18.根据上文“Raised beds are boxes filled with soil. They warm up faster in spring and have fewer weeds, allowing for extra-early planting. You can plant more vegetables in a small space, and the soil stays soft because you don’t step on it. However, building raised beds is costly.(抬高式苗床是装满土壤的箱体。它们在春天升温更快,杂草也更少,这使得提前种植成为可能。你可以在一个小空间里种植更多的蔬菜,而且由于你不会踩踏土壤,所以土壤能保持松软。然而,建造抬高式苗床的成本较高。)”可知,本段讲的是抬高式苗床园艺,前文提到建造抬高式苗床成本高。选项F“To save money, you can use wood or stones to create free-formed beds(为了节省开支,你可以使用木材或石头来制作不规则形状的苗床。)”

G“The easiest way to start food gardening is to use planters and other containers(开始种植食用植物最简单的方法是使用花盆和其他容器。)”符合这一段的主题,引出下文对容器园艺优缺点“The advantage of this method is that it turns any sunny space into a place to grow food. On the downside, there is an initial cost of containers (depending on the types of containers you choose). Plus containers dry out quicker than garden beds in the hot summer sun. (这种方法的优点是它能把任何有阳光的空间变成一个种植食物的地方。不利的一面是,一开始需要购买容器(这取决于你选择的容器类型),会有一定的成本。另外,在炎热的夏日阳光下,容器里的土壤比花园苗床里的土壤干得更快。)”的介绍。故选G。

He listened attentively, nodding sympathetically. Without hesitation, he offered to lend me some cash to cover the taxi fare to the hotel. I was overwhelmed by his generosity and thanked him profusely. He simply smiled and said, “We all need help sometimes.”
When the taxi arrived, he helped me put my suitcase in it. Before I got in, he handed me a small amount of money and wished me luck with my meetings. I assured him I would repay him as soon as possible and asked for his contact information. He waved it off, saying it wasn’t necessary.
