二、阅读理解(本大题共5小题)
Plan a Trip to Bali!
If you are looking for a dream holiday destination, then Bali meets most people’s expectations. The travel information below will help you plan your dream trip to Bali.Best Times to Visit Bali
The wet season (off-season): November to March of the following year is the rainy season. Although there is much rainfall, most activities can be carried out except for the volcano hiking. As most of these five months are the off-season for tourism, flight and hotel prices are low, and tour products and activities are cheap.
The dry season (high-season): April to October, with less rainfall, is the best season for surfing, diving, mountain hiking and bike riding. During this period, there are many local festivals, so it’s a good time to enjoy cultural activities. For example, the Bali Art Festival, held from mid-June to mid-July, is very attractive to visitors. July and August are the busiest times in Bali. So, if you don’t want to join the crowds, just avoid these two months.
During the Christmas and New Year holidays and Chinese New Year, the number of visitors rises sharply. Hotel rooms are easily fully-booked in these two periods, and bookings need to be made 1 — 3 months before your trip to Bali.Best Places to Visit in Bali
With over 5,000 square kilometers, there are many places you can visit in Bali. In general, tourism in Bali can be divided into three parts: northern/ eastern, central and southern.
●The northern and eastern parts are good for mountain climbing, hiking, volcano adventures and diving.
●Central Bali is well known for its village scenery, terraced rice fields (梯田), arts and cultural towns.
●Southern Bali has the best places for beach time, sunbathing, surfing and various watersports.
21.When can visitors go to Bali if they want to save money
A.In October. B.In August. C.In April. D.In February.
22.What should visitors do for a visit to Bali during Christmas
A.Travel there with a group. B.Get to know local weather.
C.Book hotels ahead of time. D.Avoid popular tourist attractions.
23.Who is likely to travel in the central part of Bali
A.Surfers. B.Artists.
C.Beach lovers. D.Mountain climbers.
Books have the power to transport you to another place and make you feel like you are part of the story. A love for reading should be developed at a young age so children can see books as something magical. That’s the gift that 11-year-old Selah Thompson from Atlanta, Georgia received from her parents and wants to pass on to other children.
When Selah was five years old, she came home from her first day of school and told her parents that many of her classmates were unable to read. This really worried Selah and she wanted to do something about it, so she then told her parents she wanted to give away two million books.
Her parents began to do research after hearing Selah’s big dream and found that there was a huge amount of illiteracy (文盲) in America, After understanding the dire need for books and to establish a love for reading, Selah and her parents were on board. In 2018, they created the organization Empowered Readers Literacy Project, which promotes families to create reading rituals (仪式) so children see books as something positive.
According to the organization, more than 2,400 kids and their parents went for the Project for literacy on Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday in the Project’s first event in Atlanta that first year. Selah and her family also run an Adventure Time Readers Club and tried to get books into children’s hands.
But, in addition to being exposed to reading, children were not excited about reading when they did not see themselves on the pages of the book. Therefore, Selah, along with her younger sister Syrai, wrote a book (with the help of their father) that was published in November, 2019 and that was the beginning of Penelope the Pirate Princess series.
Over the past years, the Empowered Readers Literacy Project has given away 8,000 books in Atlanta, including Selah’s own series. Although her dream of “two million books” is still quite far, Selah is on the right track.

At the start of hurricane season, we’re reminded of the power natural disasters can produce. Before the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the U.S. would see 12 to 17 named storms. They predicted the season would be “near-normal” compared with the “above-normal” 2022 season that resulted in 14 storms that formed into eight hurricanes. According to NOAA, at least three of those hurricanes caused at least $1 billion in damage, along with other natural disasters.
Given the huge damage following a hurricane, trees are — understandably — not the first focus. But once important needs are addressed and communities are ready to rebuild, replanting is often a key part. Planting trees helps people affected by a hurricane create a connection with the effort to rebuild. It can make them feel like they are personally contributing to recovery, leading to a sense of community pride.
I’ve seen it first-hand. When homeowners in disaster-stricken areas come to Arbor Day Foundation tree plantings, they expect to get their hands dirty, filled with hope and excitement. It could be that they are just big fans of trees. But I think the enthusiasm is more about what replanting represents. These trees are infusing (注入) life back into places that have been marked by loss.
At the Arbor Day Foundation, we work with local partners who know when a community is ready to replant its lost trees after a hurricane. When the time is right, we help get them what they need to plant trees.
Planting trees is also about protecting the community from the next disaster. Trees can help slow the strong winds of a hurricane and reduce the effects of flooding. When planted in the right place, they can redirect water away from homes and other buildings. In some ways, trees can be a guard against the dangerous blows Mother Nature brings.
Though hurricanes try to damage everything in their path — including our spirits — trees show us that we still have the strength to stand tall.
28.What can we know about hurricanes according to NOAA
A.Giving them names is hard. B.They can lead to huge damage.
C.They are weaker year by year. D.Predicting them rightly is impossible.
29.How can planting tress influence people hit by a hurricane
A.People show respect to nature. B.People can make a lot of money.
C.People build a closer relationship. D.People pay more attention to themselves.
30.What does the author do at the Arbor Day Foundation
A.Help those wanting to do replanting. B.Save lives from a natural disaster.
C.Predict the coming hurricane season. D.Rebuild homes and other buildings.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Hurricane Season Is Stressful B.Replanting Needs Collective Efforts
C.Natural Disasters Are Very Powerful D.Planting Trees Is Key After Hurricanes
In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well underway. Climate-conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality and fashion. Poorer countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric vehicles are climate friendly, cost-effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引擎盖) of these vehicles reveals a poisonous secret: each tuk-tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries (铅酸电池), containing almost 300 pounds of lead in total. Every year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of lead leak into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a highly profitable but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered the environment hurts people on an extraordinary scale. The numerous ways lead enters air, water, soil, and homes across the developing world — and the enormous damage it does to human health, wealth, and welfare — causes one of the biggest environmental crises in the world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5.5 million people per year, which would make it a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top of the shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is extraordinary, as is its contribution to global inequality — our research on the cognitive (认知的) effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that is fixable with some attention and a relatively modest financial investment. Better monitoring, research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the dreadful effects of lead poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
32.How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2
A.By making a comparison. B.By analyzing hidden causes.
C.By listing convincing numbers. D.By explaining its working principle.
33.What can we learn from the text
A.Lead enters rich countries in various ways.
B.Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
C.Exposure to lead doesn’t necessarily harm someone.
D.Lead leaking has caused great fear in rich and poor countries.
34.What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries
A.Fixing these used batteries. B.Putting certain effort and money.
C.Prohibiting the illegal use of lead. D.Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
35.What’s the text mainly about
A.The global lead poisoning crisis. B.The ways to solve lead problems.
C.The outcomes of using electric vehicles. D.The impacts of lead poisoning on human health.
How to Reach a Healthy Weight
Diets aren’t the way to go when it comes to losing weight. Most dieters gain back any lost weight when they go back to their old eating habits. 36 Here are four ways to make that happen:
Exercise.
37 Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, increase the intensity of your workouts and add some strength exercises to build up your muscles. I he more muscles you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren’t exercising.
38
One reason why people get less exercise these days is that there is an increase in “screen time”—the amount of time spent watching TV, looking at the computer, using mobile devices, or playing video games. Limit recreational screen time to less than 2 hours per day. If you’re staying with friends at the mall, you re getting more exercise than if you’re texting them in your room.
Watch out for portion distortion.
Portion sizes are bigger than they used to be, and these extra calories contribute to obesity. Another key factor in weight gain is that more people drink sugary beverages, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks. 39
Don’t skip breakfast.
Breakfast kick starts your metabolism (新陈代谢), burning calories from the beginning and giving you energy to do more things during the day. 40 So they get more calories than they would have if they had eaten breakfast.
A.Go out regularly.
B.Reduce screen time.
C.So what’s the best way to drop excess weight
D.Regular physical activity burns calories and builds up muscles.
E.They are puzzled about how they should deal with their eating habits.
F.People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on.
G.So choose smaller portions and go for water or low-fat milk instead of sodas.

Jack’s father never said much, but his eyes always seemed to say, “I’m proud of you, son.” And Jack felt it in every nod. Their relationship was a quiet one, with an unspoken bond (纽带).
One day, Jack came home from school with a flyer (传单) in his hand. His eyes were bright with excitement as he showed it to his father. “Dad, there’s a school talent show next month, and I want to enter. I’ve been learning guitar for months,” Jack said to his father.
His father looked up from the engine he was working on. “You play the guitar ” he asked in surprise. Feeling a little embarrassed, Jack nodded, saying, “Yeah, I’ve been taking lessons. I think I’m ready.” His father cleaned his hands with a piece of cloth, looked at Jack and smiled, “I’ll be there, son. I wouldn’t miss it.” Through his father’s eyes, Jack knew he had his father’s support.
The days leading up to the talent show were more practice and anxiety for Jack. He would come home after school and lock himself in his room, the sound of his guitar echoing (回响) through the house. His father didn’t speak too much, but he would prepare delicious food and smiled at Jack whenever he saw his son. He would also quietly listen to the music from the living room. Although Jack felt tired or nervous sometimes, he felt pushed forward by unspoken love.
The day of the talent show arrived, and the school hall was filled with excitement. Jack’s hands were shaking as he prepared his guitar backstage. He looked out into the audience and found his father with a broad smile on his face.

W: Very funny. We have a choice of different views, and each one is a different price. For instance, a room with a city view is 180 dollars a night.
M: 180 dollars a night ! That’s unbelievably expensive!
W: If you think that’s too much, there are a few other choices. We can get a courtyard room with no view for 130 dollars a night or a room with an ocean view for 150 dollars a night.
M: I don’t really care which type of room we get as long as we don’t end up with a room on the ground floor. I don’t like having people walking back and forth outside my window all night.
W: Okay, I can request a room on an upper floor. You really don’t have a preference
M: No, not really.
W: There is a penthouse room for 400 dollars a night.
M: What ! For that price, I’d better get a view of the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China!

【听力材料】
M: I’ve been living alone here for a while now. Everybody here in London is very kind to me, but there are times when I feel homesick and get rather sad. It’s bound to happen when you live far from home. I sometimes get a little tired of cooking meals just for myself. Once a week, I go to Soho, which is a part of London where there are all sorts of restaurants: French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, Indian and Chinese. So, when I don’t want to cook, I will go to one of the restaurants in Soho and have a meal there. Sometimes I even treat myself to a bottle of wine. Wine isn’t cheap in London - at least not when you buy it at a restaurant. It isn’t something we will drink in our daily life.
British people do not talk as much as we do. They are more reserved. I’ve often traveled by train and noticed that people seldom chat with each other during the journey. They like to keep themselves to themselves. A British friend of mine, who can speak seven languages, is also a quiet person. But I’ve found one way to make him talk. He’s very interested in mountain climbing. If I ask him about climbing, he’s always ready to talk. When it comes to that subject, he suddenly opens up.

77.【答案】As Jack stepped onto the stage, the lights dimmed (变暗) and the audience quieted down. Jack took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. He looked out at the sea of faces, his eyes landing on his father. With a final adjustment of his guitar, he began to play. His fingers danced across the strings, and the music filled the hall. At first, there was a slight tremble in his playing, but as he got lost in the melody, his confidence grew. The audience sat spellbound, and by the end of the performance, the hall erupted into thunderous applause. Jack felt a huge sense of relief and pride wash over him.
“I didn’t know you could play like that,” his father said. “You were great.” A big smile spread across Jack’s face. “Thanks, Dad. I couldn’t have done it without your support.” His father put his arm around Jack’s shoulders. “I always knew you had it in you, son.
